Dante weighs in in the young OT's:

Passionate Scarnecchia backs Solder - New England Patriots Blog - ESPN Boston

“I think Nate Solder is a better player today than he was all of last year, so you figure that out. Next question,” said Scarnecchia, providing the type of protection for his young tackle that he asks his players to for quarterback Tom Brady.

Re Cannon:

“I think he’s coming along [well]. I think he has some things to learn, like all young tackles have to do,” he said. “I’m pleased with the effort he’s putting forth and the way he’s developing, and we keep chugging away. He has started for us, and if he starts this year, ‘good, let’s go.’ I think he’s a good player.

My take is that Scar isn't a guy to sugarcoat things. If he's OK no need to panic.

Scarnecchia Stands Up For Tackles Nate Solder, Marcus Cannon
By: Ian Logue

Offensive line coach Dante*Scarnecchia met with the media this morning and had some notable comments about tackles Nate Solder and Marcus Cannon, who have been under fire so far this preseason....

Here's a way to test Dante for sincerity. Ask him to rate Wayne Hunter. If he says he's coming along well and has things to learn, push the PANIC button! :)

I'm all for In Scar We Trust, but if he thinks the tackle play so far through two preseason games has been acceptable, then I might have to rethink that...

Obviously, he's not going to throw his young players under the bus - so I don't take too much from these comments.

What?

Ya mean Dante doesn't read the village idiots at patsfans.com?

What a homer.

Homer...Homer...Homer...Homer....

Yeah

There's a reason why Dante doesn't listen to them.

It's the answer I'd expect even if Solder was playing on one leg, the Pats don't put their players down in front of the media. That said, his comments make sense and I'm going to take them at face value; Solder's a young guy and he should get better.

I saw this as well. I've been of the opinion that we shouldn't be freaking out based on two preseason games. Solder didn't look good at all early on last year and improved over the course of the season. He's getting used to LT now and, while he has not looked good (nor shown the foot quickness that we expected of him), we should give him a chance to make improvements in his game.

Cannon, IMO, is simply playing out of position.

Cannon will be an OG in the future, the 'good' thing about Vollmer being on PUP were the reps that Cannon got. I would expect Cannon moving to OG next year and the Pats to draft a OT or 2 next year to develop behind Solder and Vollmer.

Hopefully Waters is back next week.

This whole affair has been "Much Ado About Nothing" to quote the immortal Bard. The entire line and the blitz pickup backs have given up an enormous total of 3 sacks (!!) in two games, while missing three Starters and a retired probowl OLT.

There has been some pressures too, I grant; but so what?:eek:

Just another Freakin' homer who has NO idea what he's talking about. I mean this guy isn't just a homer, he's a "serial homer". He's been doing nothing but sugar coating, and saying good things about our offensive linemen for years! He's soft,; I tell ya Can't be trusted or defended. He should be fired for saying that kind of crap to us. No one will believe it. Consider the source.

 ;)

Are they struggling? Yes
Will they get better? Yes

Nothing Earth shattering there

This.

Solder, I'm not all that worried about.

But Cannon has been a mess, and combined with reports that he's looked that way all camp - it's hard not to wonder if a position change is on the horizon for him.

I remember many here with the same concerns after our pre-season game last season vs Detriot. Which was way worse than these past 2 pre-season games.

The line will be fine, though I would feel better if Waters came back.

Na don't listen to scar, people on this board are saying he sucks cut the bum.

Even Jon Gruden can't rate Wayne Hunter.

Yes definitely a Patriot M.O. not to publically bash a player but I dont think a highly respected guy like Scar comes out and passionately would defend these guys if he didnt feel they were capable players. You would say nothing to the media and be begging Bill to do something.

I liked this quote. I am an optimistic person and I will probably start using this.

“There is no cliff I’m throwing myself off right now. I’m telling you the truth,” he said. “That glass is half full and filling up. That’s just how I see it.”

He doesn't have the natural athleticism to deal with faster DE's off the edge. He has a bad habit of turning his shoulders immediately and trying to run with them when they get a quick first step as well. With those two deficiencies in mind, he's better built as a guard.

That may very well be true, BM BUT, while we have all jumped the gun and have perceived that Cannon isn't getting the job done because he physically CAN'T and should be a OG; Dante might see him as simply a developing very young RT who is CAN physically do the job, but just isn't because of a lot reasons that he's seen time and time again and isn't worried about.

Personally, I think on this, we'd be smart to go along with Dante. He just "might" have a little more credibility than us, That being said, I'd STILL like to see him starting at RG next year, but it doesn't mean he can't still be the back up OT. behind Solder and a healthy Volmer. ;)
