Mallett vs Hoyer - No Clear Winner Monday Night
By: Ian Logue

After watching Monday night's game against the Philadelphia Eagles, it's tough to feel overly confident about how the Patriots offense would fare in the event the unthinkable happened and Tom Brady wasn't able to line up under center....

Ian clearly suffering after what appears to be a very late night.

I was quietly impressed by the way Mallett bounced back. What was promising was you could see a great pocket presence about him. Stepped up well into the pocket when pressure cam from the outside. He's not going to be fazed by pressure and that's nice to see. Showed good footwork, steps into his throws well, good release and bar one bad decision which led to an INT brought back for a roughing call anyway, he played a good first half.

Let's add in he was playing against the bulk of the Eagles' starters last night...which makes his performance all the more pleasing. There's stuff to work with there and you can see it.

LOL, just realized that as I was heading to bed. Definitely looking forward to Sunday afternoon games

I thought Mallett had a pretty good game; certainly wasn't his fault that Cannon was severely overmatched at RT (I originally typed it as Cannot... Freudian slip?). Hoyer had a rough outing, but for much of it he was playing with our backups against the Eagles' starters, so I think he deserves a free pass, more or less.

Yeah, even if the unthinkable happened, Mallett would be throwing to Lloyd, Welker, Gronk, Hernandez, etc., not Silvestro, Stallworth, and Bolden. I kind of liked what I saw out of him. He's progressed.

Pretty much sums it up. It was a solid outing in a sophomore year, off of his first full preseason, and he really showed us what Belichick sees in him. We aren't in any rush; both he and Brady are up for renewal in 2015 and we can safely assume that Brady will be the starter unless he gets injured. I would like to see Mallett with the starting offence at some point and see how he reacts to that to determine whether he is truly capable of stepping up as a backup with all the pieces there for him.

I see a lot of things in Mallett hat I don't see in Hoyer. His ceiling is much higher and if you watch his mechanics you can see why. All he really needs to work on, and the only thing slightly separating him from Hoyer as the primary backup, is his decision making. Sometimes needs to get that ball out of there quicker but he shows really nice ability to keep the play alive whilst analysing the field.

It's tough to gauge...his samples have all come with the second and third team units and that doesn't always help a QB's case although he should start to elevate his game and the pieces around him eventually. On top of that, we don't know what McDaniels is doing to the offence; for all we know this could be a completely fresh year for Mallett which would in effect, make this like another rookie season for him.

Thought Mallett looked way more comfortable.

Certainly better than last week.

Interesting to see how much playing time against Tampa Tommy Boy gets.

I was down on Mallet in the other thread, but I have to say, he was impressive on Monday night against a very good Eagles defense. I thought he played better than Hoyer.

If he can build on the Monday night success, I would be in favor of trading Hoyer. Hoyer better step it up.

I don't see a lot of interest in Hoyer on the trade market...I think we overrate him simply because he is a Patriot. He will likely sign with another team as a UFA and have to battle the incumbant for the #1 spot. He is JAG when it comes to back up QBs.

Mallet is a work in progress who looked decent considering many of the guys he played with will be taking your deli order in a couple of weeks. He has huge upside as others have pointed out. Time will tell.

Mallett has all the tools except for what's going on with his decision making. Uses good footwork to avoid the rush in the pocket, cannon for an arm, good accuracy on deeper balls, and sees the field clearly. However, all of those are nullified one way or another by his sometimes poor decision making. I'm high on the guy's future, but right now he reminds me a little too much of Bledsoe.

I think if Hoyer had been out there with the first string offense he'd have been much more impressive than Mallett. He didn't even have Edleman to work with... Hoyer practices with the ones to replace Brady. Mallett gets few snaps with the ones, mostly he works with end of the roster guys and they tend to build their own repore.

As for fans getting any sense of whether Mallett will be Brady's replacement years from now...he won't be here. Same deal as Hoyer, he will want a shot at starting in his prime and if he didn't Bill would view that as lack of drive. Brady's replacement isn't on the roster yet. He's still in college.

other than making excuses, this makes no sense....they both played with the same personnel, and while people say there was no clear winner, Mallett simply throws a better ball on 90% of the throws tha need to be made. whether it is an outside screen, or something down field, once the ball is in the air, hoyer's throws take forever to get there. Mallett also showed better presence in the pocket, and he clearly sees better over the LOS. If Brady goes down, Hoyer may go in to finish the game, but it will be Mallett starting the following week.

one could argue that if mallett had the ones to play with, that he would do even better

Mallett appears not quite ready for prime time. However, his poise under pressure was prmoising. I would like to see him with the 1st team offense. His ceiling his high.

Hoyer? His ceiling is not high enough for a family of dwarfs to live comfortably.

Mo makes perfect sense.

The true answer can't be known but it's legit to have that opinion.

Likewise, believing Mallett would be better is also legit.

If BB was really in the mood to trade either, they would have to work extensively with the first team in a "game plan" style setting.

That would make the preseason very interesting.

I may get blown up for this, but is being like Bledsoe bad? There will only ever be one TB and getting a player like Bledsoe as his heir apparent isn't bad. Bledsoe put up ridiculous numbers and led the Pats to the SB. He was a good QB on teams that became bad because of Bobby Greer's horrendous drafting. Bledsoe was replaced by Brady arguably the GOAT, but Bledsoe was no slouch.

I was a fan of Drew's and he was the ultimate professional in how he handled the Brady situation and his subsequent trade to the Bills.

If we replace the GOAT with a player whose ceiling is Bledsoe, I would be happy.

Just for the sake of argument blind who is the better QB? Obviously one is Drew.

In Hoyer, I see a QB that lacks the physical tools to lead a first team offense against a first team defense with any promising level of success. One of his problems last night was that the Eagles defense played him like he can't make the throws that need to be made. they can't attack Mallett the same way because they know he can. Hoyer does not get that ball to Silvestro......end of story

nothing against bledsoe, but Mallett looked nothing like Bledsoe......Mallett has already shown better pocket movement than bledsoe ever did.

Not in Belichick's system, and if you don't grasp that after a decade I don't know what else to say. And not for nothing but Drew was off of two teams and out of the league before he was Brady's age for a reason. Repeated mental mistakes, poor decision making. Inability to process information quickly and consistently and move within the pocket. Inability to adapt situationally. The killer turnover. In the end what some characterized as flat out insubordination. That completion % and TD to INT ratio that just won't fly in this system. Neither will attitude or entitlement. Bill exposed Drew for who and what he was before he coached him here. But he couldn't save him from himself because he didn't have the requisite skillset or mindset to be salvagable. He was going sooner than later whether Brady replaced him or not. Much like Kosar...

I never said Bledsoe was a bad quarterback, just that Mallett's decision making skills remind me of Drew's. I think we could all safely say that this is one area where Brady just absolutely blows Drew away.
