Patriots - Eagles Game May Be True Tune-Up
By: Steve Balestrieri

Monday night in Foxboro, I think you may see something more akin to the Patriots dress rehearsal for the season....

Looking forward to seeing if Solder will be able to rebound from his bad outing against the Saints and hold his own against Babin.

why is the preseason schedule so condensed for the last 3 games this year? i feel like there's such a conflict now between sorting out a ton of competitions in almost all positions and needing to make sure they don't get annihilated by injuries before the season even starts.

BB has got to have his plan already in place regarding the last 3 games in 10 days. I'm sure he does..

I'd use games 2 and 4 as more typical PS games and treat game 3 to see how bubble guys do against other teams 1's as much as absolutely possible. No Brady in game 3 at all.

In fact, why not throw Edelman in at QB in that game? He played QB in college. If he gets his destroyed at least they still have their 3 QB's left, unscathed and the Pats only lose their #5 or #6 (at best) receiver.
:scared:

The Pats-Eagles game is the last game of week 2, being Mon night. If they played on the Fri or Sat before (like most of the other teams), it would be a normal schedule but when you couple that with the early games in week 4 for the cutdowns, both the Pats and Eagles have compressed schedules for the last three preseason games...

It's funny that the pre-season is actually a tougher schedule than the regular season. There isn't a stretch all regular season with four QBs in a row nearly as good as Brees - Vick - Freeman - Eli Manning.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers should be really fun to check out - they may be the most improved team in the NFL. They drafted really well and picked up studs all over the place, most notably WR Vincent Jackson, guard Carl Nicks and cornerback Eric Wright. They're in a brutal division, though, so who knows?

Anyway, it'll be nice to get to the regular season so we can take a breather until the playoffs.

I could see the starters playing a half plus this week and close to a half in week 4 with week 3 and the second half of week 4 being the big week for backups and bubble guys. They have 11 days then to recover from a half of week 4 play whereas 15 days is too long for the starters to not face game situations heading into the season.

Week 3 also features joint team practice with Tampa. So that game would be a good time to get Hoyer and Mallett each a quarter or so against someone else's starters on the road, a chance for Hoyer to again come back in after a half for a series and then let Mallett play the last quarter and a half. Then in week 4 give Brady the first quarter, Hoyer the second (Coughlin will only be playing his starters for a quarter tops, maybe only a series, as they play us on 5 days and then open the season 7 days later) and then Mallett his last snaps of the season with all the bubble guys from both teams.

What a way to clear up a roster spot: Shi*can Mallet and give Edleman some reps. At this point I don't see that the team is hurt by that move if the third QB has to play.

Pats/Saints is on NFLN right now.

FWIW

The Eagles going 9 technique should pose a good challenge for the foot speed of both tackles.

I want to see how Solder reacts with Mankins beside him. Does he take the pressure off and help him able to concentrate on his LT duties? Does Mankins even play?

WHEN Mankins and Solder are playing together, Solder will be much better. Solder is our LT. He is a top talent. He has had a year of training. He'll be fine.

does every team play 3 games in ten days?

was this kind of preseason schedule a necessity per Rogered Goodell?

does three games in ten days really acclimate the rookies, hell even the veterans, to the NORMAL week to week NFL regular season schedule?

why the penny ante carnival barker type snake oil sales jobs on these games squeezed into this narrow time frame?

with this idiotic, totally unnecessary labor dispute with the regular refs totally ignored by Rogered until this deadline doomsday, just exactly what CAN we expect to see from the new and improved NFL blubbered up by Rogered months ago, now that it looks like these replacement hacks will be handling all the remaining preseason games and IF there's a settlement, the regular refs get to refine their play calling as the regular season unfolds??

Really, can't say enough about the Rogered that saved our league (isn't that how it goes??? HE did all the work and the scenes of the union reps with Kraft and other owners were just window dressing there at the settlement table???".Rogered is just a tremendous leader isn't he??...dodges a HUGE bullet through no skill of his own and defecates all over the post settlement glow and promise of stability with THIS moronic, short sighted, fumbling, amateurish and totally unnecessary crapfest with the regular refs.

Here's the good news...what can possibly go wrong NOW???...I mean, THIS crap HAS TO BE THE END OF IT...right???...FWIW I'm watching the replay from last week for like the fifth time and these refs $UCKED...it's worse every time I watch it again...call after non call after non call....if THESE clowns are going to continue into the regular season working games, the entire schedule is reduced to a gigantic laughing stock...all that's missing is the Rock and the Undertaker in a cage match at half time.

The Patriots play the 20th, the 24, and the 29th..preseason games 2, 3 and 4.

How does someone hired to manage the integrity, health and future of the NFL look at a schedule like this and think.."uh...yeah..looks just fine to me...let's go with that everybody!"...

I think that the Eagles will be the toughest team we play in the pre-season, and I also think they WILL be the best test of our entire team.

I also think that if the Patriots get anyone seriously injured in that short span, there ought to be holy h3ll to pay. There's no valid reason to play that many games in so short a period. None whatsoever.

I'm sure that Belichick has taken this whole thing into consideration, and will act accordingly.

Like someone else has said, one would think that he has a very good idea of what the top positional battles will be at this point...which also means that he has a good idea of players 1-48 or so, maybe even as high as 1-50.

There's no way that anyone would agree to this if they weren't prepared to showcase most of their backups in at least 1 game. I can understand treating Monday's game AND the last one being treated 'normally,' with the 3rd game being treating much differently.

Also---while this may not have much merit, some thought it was strange to see TFB playing at all in the 1st game. This weird schedule may also have something to do with that, although now we're just guessing.

as the well known board paranoid, I can't help but think this fumbling goon will attack Belichick and try some more of his ***headed sanctions if BB uses the 2nd game as this year's de facto third exhibition game, and just runs the scrubs out there for the entirety of the third and fourth games. He'll dream up some idiotic crap like "insult to the integrity of the game" or "flaunting my direct orders prohibiting the deliberate throwing of preseason games" thereby opening up another round of "Gate!!!!" hysteria.

I cannot believe anybody trusts this goon.

and you mention "weird schedule", Supa...why is there this "weird schedule"? The strike is settled, everything is back to normal, the league is saved by "MIGHTY ROGERED!", "business as usual" he exclaims at every thrust of a microphone...oh wait, uh..and the Pats play three games within 225 hours...plus fly to England for that little Rogered "beauty" of a turd game. Why do the Patriots deserve all these "generosities"?

Doesn't matter,my good friend, this team will be locked and loaded......you're going to see a lot more 21-10 games,However, you're really going to see a full team effort to control the last quarter, both offense and defense......There will be less flash and more power. We need longer drives to control TOP,won't be as many highlights, but it sure has worked for the Giants,of recent:rocker:

Concur. I just want this 3-game stretch to be over and done with and the team free from injuries.

and there it is, Gwedd...three games in under 10 days??? you're just begging to have all kinds of injuries from bumps and bruises to season ending IR visits...I had a real close friend who played for the Pats in the 80's and I saw what he went through as a matter of routine...the day after a game you just lay up and recover, usually Mondays...Tuesdays you're in for the whirlpool, therapy,whatever...Wednesday, you start to feel relatively back to normal, Thursday and Friday you work on the gameplan....with THIS idiotic schedule you can be sure there will be ZERO laying up,no recovery time...you get a bruise and it's right back out there getting a bruise on top of that bruise...and then again.,...who agreed to this insanity??????
