How many Colts would start on the Patriots

My take:
On offense, the WRs would. Dallas Clark would not. He has bigger catch numbers than our TEs, but wouldn't start in our system over our more well-rounded guys. (At the same time he may start over our guys in the Colts system) Addai wouldnt. Manning wouldn't. I suppose if you had all 10 of the starting OL on the same team, Light (IMO, he is clearly better than Glenn) Mankins, Koppen (clearly better than Saturday) would easily start. Neal, IMO would, and the players would be shifted around a bit so one Colt OL started, probably Glenn at RT.
On D, no one on their DL would start. (I imagine, maybe possibly we would play more 43 to get Freeney in, but he so weak vs the run, I doubt he would play in any situations other than nickel/dime)
At LB, I think Brackett, today would start inside, with Vrabel moving outside, and TBC to the bench. June would have to try and become a safety to play on our D. Freeney couldn't handle the run from an OLB position in the 34 either.
At corner, no one they have would start for us. Sanders would be a starter at safety, and if both Harrison and Wilson were healthy, we'd probably move Wilson to corner because we could afford to. I dont believe Sanders would start over Wilson though if they didnt make that move, because we use our safeties very differently than the colts, and Wilsons strengths fit our D better.

#1 there is NO WAY IN THE WORLD that saturday is better than Koppen. I cant even say its close. I agree with you on Diem, and disagree on Glenn. He and Light are basically a draw as pass blockers and Light is a much better run blocker IMO. But it is a subjective thing. No way I give in on Koppen, but I could accept 3 of our 5 start over theirs.


I disagree on Harper. I think he is in the bottom 20% of starting corners, and Hobbs is just a better player. (Scott is too)

Clark as a receiver only as I said, is at this point, ahead of our TEs, but Watson has much greater potential. But as a complete TE, its not even close. We require TEs to be much better blockers than Clark is.

I'm assuming 2 healthy rosters:


Offense first

Colts' offensive starters: RT, WR1, WR2

Patriots offensive starters: QB, WR3/TE1, RG, C, LG, LT

Could go either way, depending upon planned use: RB

New England arguably has the 2 best running backs (3 of the best 4) and the 3 best tight ends, but you'd have to see those two positions battle it out to be sure because of the significance in the different ways they are used.


Defense next

Colts defensive starters: (maybe) a linebacker to either replace TBC or to move Vrabel back outside in TBC's spot.


Due to injury, it's probable that the Colts would also place Bob Sanders in the starting defensive backfield, although I don't think that's quite as definite as others appear to believe.

What does everyone else think?

I think it's difficult to compare since the two systems run by each team are completely different and need players that would not necessarily work in both systems.

Especially on defense. The types of players they have would not work in our system, but that doesn't necessarily make our players 'better', as ours might not work in their system either.

They stress speed. We've historically stressed size and power.

On offense I think it's clear that their top two wideouts are head and shoulders above the guys we have and would easily take the 1 and 2 spots from our guys.

At QB you'd probably do well to use Manning in the regular season and Brady in the post season.

At RB I'd take our guys, but on the OL I'm not so sure how many of our guys would still start. That unit always blocks productively for RBs and nearly always keeps Manning clean (though that may be the hyperactive speed at which he operates more than their blocking, I don't know).

At TE again I think it's different skillsets for different schemes. Our guys are big, physical TEs that can both block and catch (ideally for our system). The Colt TEs seem like they're more used for pass catching as Utecht and Clark aren't known for their blocking that I've ever heard of.

I know for sure that our secondary could have used a guy like Bob Sanders at points this season, with all those injuries. That's the one thing that I can say for sure beyond the WRs.

It's really hard to compare the front 7 in defense because the philosophy is so different. Even Pats contain 3-4 is much different from SD's attacking 3-4.

In secondary, Sanders and Harper start on the Pats now.

Dallas Clark is used more as a slot receiver, so he is also hard to compare. Their Wrs are obviously better, and not by a little.

The Colts line seems to get more push. On the runs outside, it seems like the RBs don't get touched for 3-4 years past LoS; plus, they tend to always be near the top in fewest sacks. It's hard for me to attribute to individuals, but I believe Saturday keeps going to pro bowls.
