OT: Luck Looking Good

It's only the first few preseason games and everything, but Luck is looking like the real deal. I'm streaming the Colts game on this boring Sunday, and I like his decision-making. He has a strong arm and is flashing really good pocket presence. He already has two TD passes in the first half, albeit it against the Rams.

Luck's 1st pass in the game was a TD, Irsay's already tweeting "Historic beginning!!!!!!!!!!!!! The legend has begun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Apparently Mannings 1st preseason pass was a TD as well, to Marvin Harrison, interesting. I did not know.

He showed beautiful touch on a "shoulda been" third touchdown pass in this game. The kid just looks the part and the Colts are set at QB for the next decade+.

andrew luck looked "ok". he threw a 3 yard shuffle pass that ended up being a 60 yard touch down. not only that he was playing the second worst team in the league from last season.

to me a measure of a great qb is not how many completions or TDs he throws, but whether he can throw the ball in tight spots with good coverage. if he throws to a wide open receiver where the nearest defender is 10 yards away, im just not as impressed. of all his highlight throws, there were may only a couple into tight coverage.

Did you watch the highlights? He threw a few passes in tight spots and was dead on. I like him, just wish he wasn't on the Colts. He definately looks like the real deal.

I agree but -- did you watch the game? I watched it a bit. Had some excellent passes in tight spaces that turned into horrendous drops. Beyond that, just his awareness of the game, his decision making and the way his athletic ability allowed him to elude pressure (and wisely throw the ball away) -- all impressive.

Just a pre-season game, just the Rams and all that stuff. Who knows what we'll see when it gets real. But an impressive start. (And I actually tuned in the game because I was annoyed by Breer and Rapoport on Twitter ball-washing about how good he looked and had to see for myself).

He completed some nice passes, one was perfectly thrown and the defensive back went for the pick but it was just out of reach. He only attempted 16 passes, so how many tight, on the money passes can we expect? And why would he throw it into coverage while he seemed to have Austin Collie open on every play.

And I guess you don't like to read the good reports about Chandler Jones, huh? I guess you haven't read a single thread about how good Hightower has done in training camp thus far either, huh? The fact is the guy made some decent plays against pro players. Why should it matter that he only threw a certain number of passes, or it was the Rams, or it's just the beginning. There's a starting point to everything. If some people learn to read in context and not jump to the next conclusion, they'd notice what was actually written. The used the word "looking," as in the game I was watching. I never made any reference of what he will be, good or bad.

Listen, just because it's early in the process doesn't mean you can't admire the progress that a player has made thus far, especially a rookie. We all understand that a lot can change between now and when the games actually matter, but that doesn't mean we need people like you reminding us at every turn that these games are meaningless. In fact, one could argue that thought they're meaningless in the win-loss column, they aren't meaningless to the young players trying to get a feel for the game on the pro level, they aren't meaningless to the veterans trying to work back into the grind, they aren't meaningless to the coaches working 20-hour days trying to see what they've got going into the season and, last but certainly not least, they aren't meaningless to the fans of the sport that are just enjoying that fact that the regular season is around the corner.

you make some good points, but in a way you bolster my own argument. all i was saying it's just way to early to even judge how good he's going to be. Based on what I saw of the few highlights today, i can't come to the conclusion that some people in the media and on this board are making.

i'll admit i didn't see the game, but based on the highlights it looked like he was mostly throwing across the middle to wide open guys. that's all find and dandy, but i'd like to see more of what he can do in the red zone when there won't be as much space. this is where the coverages get super tight and guys like rodgers and brady just do such an amazing job. on the other hand, qbs like Rivers struggle in the red zone. is rivers good? sure but's he not elite.

That's weak at best. Nobody's going to care in November what happened in September either. They'll only care about the win-loss column, and that's hardly going to be decided only in September. Nobody's going to care come playoff time what happened in the regular season. Does that mean we should just skip the regular season and only watch and talk about what happens in the playoffs?

By the way, do you really think I believe you've read nothing on him, even out of curiosity if nothing else? C'mon, buddy. That's just simply not true. You can say you won't buy the hype, but don't say you haven't at least read something about the kid. There is a difference.
