Not sure where the best place is to post this news. Feel free to merge.

LSU head coach Les Miles announced Friday that junior DB Tyrann Mathieu is 'no longer on our team."Miles added that "we'll miss him, but we have to go on."

The head coach also noted that the decision is "permanent... he will not be back." Miles gave no specific reason other than it was "fundamental behavior" that led to the decision, but rumors circulated earlier that Mathieu failed another drug test, reportedly his third in three seasons. LSU "will help him try to find a place to play" next season, and the likeliest scenario is to move down a level of competition to an FCS program, similar to Janoris Jenkins. Aug 10 - 1:02 PM

Tyrann Mathieu - LSU Tigers - 2012 Player Profile - Rotoworld.com

Listed at 5'9" I think he's closer to 5'7" so I'm not sure how he would translate to the NFL anyway but still what a waste of talent.

Wow. Thanks for posting.

Mathieu has a ton of talent, but also a ton of question marks. Size. Positional fit. Recurrent off field issues. This will probably cost him a ton of money next April. He could be still be a top 50 pick like Janoris Jenkins, but he could also fall like Janzen Jackson.

Or the April after next. Either way, this is a draft changer.

I'd guess he's more like Jackson than Jenkins though.

That video by OTG was awesome. Really emulates the expectations of such an aggressive defender.

Would love to see this kid in the rotation as a defender. He exudes "playmaker".

Walter Football's Charlie Campbell on Mathieu's situation:

Cornerback Tyrann Mathieu has his draft stock in free fall after he was kicked off the LSU football team. Mathieu has reportedly failed multiple drug tests. He may have to sit out this season and enter the 2013 NFL Draft, or he could decide to return to college football in 2013 in order to attempt to improve his draft standing.

At this time, it isn't clear what level of football Mathieu will be eligible to transfer to in order to play this season. Mathieu's best move would be to transfer down a level to a school like North Alabama or Arkansas State in order to play this season. However, some believe that Mathieu will be ineligible to play at any NCAA school this year. If that is the case, he probably will just enter the 2013 NFL Draft.

Mathieu was one of the best players in college football in 2011. He was the only defensive player to make it as a finalist for the Heisman Trophy. Off the field, however, Mathieu has had a sketchy reputation for some time. To continue to use drugs after being suspended once for it is nothing short of being a complete idiot.

Mathieu is extremely undersized. At 5-foot-9, 175-pounds he did not project to being a shut down corner in the NFL. He looked like a potential slot corner and free safety. Using him in that manner would protect his size limitations while putting him in position to use his instincts to make plays. Buccaneers cornerback Ronde Barber has had a long career despite being that small. Chiefs cornerback Brandon Flowers is also 5-foot-9, and he is one of the better corners in the NFL. It is abnormal but possible for undersized corners to flourish.

If Mathieu doesn't play this season the best he could probably hope to go in the 2013 NFL Draft would be the middle rounds. Depending on how bad the character issues are, he could fall to the final rounds or go completely undrafted. Last year, the Florida Gators kicked out talent cornerback Janoris Jenkins, a potential high first-round pick. He played at North Alabama last year and ended up going in the second round to the St. Louis Rams. Mathieu is not as good a pro prospect as Jenkins, but that would be the best case scenario for Mathieu at this time. Otherwise he could end up being this draft's Burfict, something we wrote last June.

Michael Felger draft strategy Part IV. Have players you like smoke as much weed as possible to lower draft stock or drill a cop(Dennard). Scoop them up in later rounds; Spikes, Hernandez, Dennard and Honey Badger.

In all seriousness, given that the Pats generally pick at the end of rounds with their own picks, BB has managed to be very creative in finding talent that slips through the draft:

- Injury/health concerns: Gronk, Spikes, Cannon
- Off field issues (after very careful vetting, and used sparingly, and only on day 3): Hernandez, Dennard, Mallett
- Guys whose stats were impacted by injury: Jones
- "Raw" but talented prospects: Jones, Solder, possibly even Ebner
- Selective "reaches": Vollmer, Ridley, Wilson

BB's not going to go for a "top 5" talent who underperforms (Coples) or slides de to character issues (Bryant). He's going to go for a "raw" kid whose stats were impacted by coming off a knee injury (Jones) or who is considered not quite ready (Solder). He wouldn't take a kid like Janoris Jenkins in the 2nd round, but he'd take Alfonzo Dennard in the 7th.

Mathieu will undoubtedly be very carefully scrutinized. He'll either be off the Pats' board entirely, or a prize potential value target, depending on whether they view his off field issues as immaturity or an ongoing problem.

I'd take him for his punt return ability alone. Maybe, can play a nickel or dime back. Gamble and make big plays. A Terrell Buckley type. 3-5th round though.

IMO a college football star looking toward the NFL who fails drug test every year isn't just an "idiot" as the Walter Football commentary had it. That sounds like a guy with a genuine drug PROBLEM.

Some rumors connected him to McNeese State, but he has two years of eligibility left, i almost wonder if it would be better to transfer to another BCS school, it would give him more time to get his stock back up.

From our good friends at NEPatriotsDraft.com:

Assuming Mathieu is eligible to transfer to an NCAA school (CBS.com writer Bruce Feldman said earlier that if Mathieu failed his third drug test he would be ineligible to transfer to an NCAA school. That would leave Mathieu with HBCU, NAIA and Junior College schools as his options) he will have to transfer to a division 1-AA or Division II school if he wants to play this year. Mathieu won’t be as visible this season, which is probably a good thing, but he will still be an NFL prospect. (Editor’s note – the transfer situation is still fluid and more clarification will be coming soon)

but since he has been connected with several FCS school we can assume that he is eligible to transfer to another NCAA school
