Chandler Jones

It is early, but WOW! Chandler Jones was unblockable. All he did was create havoc when he was on the field. They even ended up giving the LT some help with chip blocks by the end of the first quarter. I am super impressed.

Seriously, that guy is a PLAYER!

I had high hopes for Jones. But if last night was any indication of what he will do this season, he will be one of the favorites for Defensive Rookie of the Year. I have never seen a rookie dominate a pretty good LT in his first game in a while.

I didn't get to see the game but, if that's the case, imagine what he's going to be like for the Pats in a couple of years. :)

Anybody wanna take a guess at what his weight is right now? There is no way that he is at that listed 260 pounds.

Bedard has some great insight on that today:

NFL scouts said it was widely known that Jones cut weight in the lead-up to the draft because he didn’t know what position he would play in the NFL. He wanted to be attractive to both 3-4 (at outside linebacker) and 4-3 (at end) teams. So he played the tweener role to the extreme.

Once the Patriots drafted Jones, he knew he would be playing end. So the weight and strength went back on, big time.

Meh...i thought he looked rather skinny from pics early on.

But right now with pads on he looks like a man.

A healthy Andre Carter vs. Chandler Jones would of been a hell of a competition for RDE, now its no question Jones will start.

Heh Rob why are you arguing with those clowns over at JI?

Some genius at JI : " I don't know where you read that.
Just checked the boxscores on NFL.com
Ingram had 2 tackles 1 assist, no sacks, no FF's, no FR's, no INT's.
Jones had 1 tackle 1 assist, no sacks, no FF's, no FR's, no INT's.
I wouldn't exactly classify either debut as lightening in a bottle, just sayin'.....

In all fairness, I didn't watch the game, if you did, I'll take your word for it but alot of what you are saying - particularly Jones being a force against the run, sure doesn't show up in his 1 tackle/1 assist stat-line.

If he was that much of a force against the run, I would think he would have had more then 1 tackle & 1 assist. "

I guess he's going through the stages of grief starting with denial.

Stats are for pansies.

The stats really doesn't tell the story here.

I broke my rule of not posting there after training camp starts, but I guess my joy of how well Jones played last night got the best of me.

Stats don't show anything.

Jones pressure on Brees forced him to throw the ball away.

Next series, he forced 2 holding calls back to back and the Saints then had a 3rd and 22.

His 2 tackles were both great plays BTW.

Bedard tells a better story of Jones' production with stats (although not official stats):

Jones produced five quarterback pressures in 14 dropbacks.

Against the run, he held the point well enough to factor in on two stuffed runs (carries of 1 yard or less) in another 12 snaps.

That’s a total of seven impact plays in just 26 plays.

Oh, just one other note, I look at the thread list and I see no mention of Mesko...this kid is great...he made some fantastic directional punts look easy tonight.

Regarding Mesko, great comment. He's become a weapon for the Patriots.

There was never any doubt that Zoltan The Space Emperor (Of Space) was Destined For Greatness.

Kind of laughed about the stat line comment. Jones had an impact on 7 of 26 snaps which is a pretty amazing stat in itself.

Regular season, playoffs and superbowls have been won and lost by 1 play.(as we well know} How many times have we heard if we had just made 1 more play we would of won the last 5 years?

Now granted it is just 1 preseason game and noone is giving away any awards but it is the best start any of us could of hoped for from the rookie. I don't remember anyone pointing out Seymour or Wilforks stat lines. If you did you might think them just ordinary players?

By comparison to Jones

Almost from the start of training camp, coach Romeo Crennel has tried to downplay expectations for rookie nose tackle Dontari Poe, the Chiefs first-round draft pick. Crennel put that in his strongest terms yet on Wednesday when asked what Poe needs to improve on in order to get more playing time.

“A lot,” Crennel said. “He needs to work on technique, he needs to work on understanding the system, he needs to get the calls correct all the time. He’s got a ways to go.”

By comparison to Jones

Romeo's old-school, I wouldn't put too much stock in his comments about a rookie. In fact, that quote sounds a lot like Belichick in a sideline interview last night, refusing to say one positive word about Chandler Jones. :)

By comparison to Jones

Go listen to Belichick's postgame comments on Jones. You'll find that they sound strikingly similar to Crennel's comments on Poe.
