Lovie Smith pulling for Colts win

On the NFL Network tonight, Bears coach Lovie Smith said as soon as his game is over he's going to tune in the AFCCG and pull for Tony Dungy "So we can go to the Super Bowl and make history together."

First of all, what parents in their right minds would name their kid "Lovie"? Secondly, this is the first time ever I've heard a coach state two days before his own conference championship game who he'd like to play in the Super Bowl. Yeah, the reason is obvious, but who wants a couple of sentimental "pals" going against each other in the biggest game of the year?

I'll tell you what: I'm sick of all the sentiment against the Patriots, that "this is Peyton's time," blah, blah, bullsh!t. Dungy even said in his press conference today that he's been getting calls of encouragement from all over the country. These things just give me all the more reason to hope and pray that we ABSOLUTELY CRUSH the Colts and Manning showing NO MERCY! If Vinny Testaverde can throw a garbage-time touchdown to Tully Banta-Caine to run up the score, I'M ALL FOR IT! If we can make Addai bleed, DO IT! If Brady can rifle a bullet into Freeney's gonads, I say YEAH! This is war, and I want to see Manning's head on a stake afterward.

I could coach the personnel on that Bears defense to #1 in the league. A Colts-Bears super bowl would be a terrible game, because those are the two worst coaches in the playoffs (besides Herm, who is on his own level).

Gee, I wonder what would happen if BB called Sean Payton and said I am pulling for you, so us two "white guys" can meet in the Super Bowl. Amazing the double standard in this country today. I just hope we maul them bastards come Sunday, so the media can stop with this crap angle, the manning ball washing, and ring deserving. It is time for BB and the Pats to take on this "us against the world mentality" and drive it all the way home. Hopefully, this will give him more "bulletin board" material. The reason that storyline worries me however, is when a potential storyline like that exists, there must be some in the upper management of the NFL who are thinking 'oh we just have to have this!'. It's a business thing. It will be history making and grab a ton of buzz generating headlines. To the NFL that means viewers and that is of prime importance. Of course the Patriots getting back to the super bowl is a potential semi 'viewer grabber' too, just not in the positive light the Bears-Colts are. It's like the Yankee syndrome or the Lakers of some years ago. People who are otherwise disinterested in a -team A versus Team B big game-, become very interested in -team A versus universally hated team B big game-. Put it this way, what is the next best game to watch besides the teams you like? It's the team you love to hate/see lose. Sick as it is, Dallas games always interested me this year just to see Jerry Jones and T.O. lose. I don't know if the Patriots are there yet but if they aren't (which they might be), they will be with one more SB victory this year. So hopefully in the NFL, they see continuing Patriot success as the making of a viewer attracting anathema. I just would not feel good about the NFL business trust totally hoping the outcome is a certain way (especially when that certain way doesn't include the Patriots ).

Well, the NFL has already legislated against the Patriots via rule changes. What else can they do to stymie BB's success? The only obvious answer is to have the refs fix the game. But it's becoming obvious that fans like you and me are the ONLY ones who want New England to win.

I can't tell if you get it from your post, but I'm pretty sure that what Lovie was referencing is he wanted to make "history" with Dungy together as they would both be the first African-American coaches to coach in a Super Bowl.

I don't think it has anything to do with them being friends.

I'm sure the individual leagues have their desired match-ups but asside from blatant officiating "miscues", there is little that the league can do to ensure a "game of their dreams." Trust me, in 2003 when MLB was litterly only outs away from a Sox-Cubs World Series, both MLB and Fox were licking their chops. If there was a way they could have made that happen, it would have.

Yes, I got it. But the fact is that they are friends, I believe they coached together at one point. So, they are friends and members of what appears to be a pretty tight black coaching fraternity in the NFL. (Smith was in the stands at the Colts-Chiefs first-round game.)

Come on, some of you are being a wee bit sensitive here. Lovie Smith got his break in the NFL from Tony Dungie, and there also hasn't been a black head coach make the Super Bowl - ever.

If there's anything that you could possibly read between the lines here - it's that maybe he doesn't want to face Belichick in the big game? Can you blame him? Who would? Take is as respect, if you take it as anything at all.

Well it was a 4 point game, and that was with bad Rex showing up that day. But still, I won't argue that the Pats would be heavy favs and rightfully so. Nobody wants to face Belichick when he has 2 weeks to gameplan against you.

Anyway, it won't matter unless both teams getting there. Personally I like the Bears chances better. That's not a diss of the Pats. I just think the Bears opponent this weekend is very overrated, particularly by the ESPN.

Again, good luck against the Colts. I am actually pulling for you guys. I think it's partially because the whole country outside of Boston and Chicago seems to be pulling hard for a Colts - Saints Super Bowl.

Well hopefully we'll be talking over the next two weeks. I just like the matchup better. A mostly power run offense with an inconsistent QB and mostly downfield WR. New Orleans worries me more with the more versatile pair of RB and creatable mismatches of Bush against our slower LB. Plus a more reliable QB.

Lovie Smith has publicly said that he wants the Colts to win so he can be in the first Super Bowl with two BLACK head coaches. In other words, he doesn't want the Pats to win because BB is WHITE. And that's OK with everybody? I think he's a racist POS and he needs to STFU because it's not going to happen. Not that it matters to me either way, but the two best teams left right now are NO and NE.
