Colvin's 4Q advice to Belichick

Just caught Inside the NFL on HBO, where they played the NFL Films clips from the Chargers game.

It was immediately after the D's three-an-out stop of the Chargers, and just before Brady started the march down the field for the winning FG. Colvin is sitting on the bench and shouting out to Belichick off-camera.

He says: "Drop back and throw it Bill, they ain't got no rushes no more - they're tired".

I found this clip interesting for three reasons:

1. It confirms my impression that the Charger D was smoked, having endured the long game-tying TD drive and subsequent successful 2-pt conversion - and THEN having to go right back on the field after a three and out. And it is certainly the approach the Patriots took on the ensuing drive.

2. It seems Colvin is one of the few players who can actually call Belichick by his first name. Even Brady doesn't do that, as he revealed in a recent press conference.

3. It implies that Belichick has perhaps retained much more control over the playcalling than many of the usual anti-Josh (fill in your expletive) on this board think. And certainly more than what the tin-foil-hat theorists think Vinny Testeverde has - despite his secret microphones / handsignals.

Late in a crucial playoff game, I'd say that even when Weis was here, you'd go to Belichick first in terms of running the O. Charlie would pick the play, but you can bet BB would be there deciding the strategy.

I think that publicly, they don't call him 'Bill', I think that's what Brady meant. When I hear most players talk about their coaches to the media, they always say "Coach so-and-so", and I think it's just a respect thing. Behind the scenes, things are probably more lenient.

I assume Coach. To my recollection, in the interview clip, he slipped and said 'Bill' - he corrected himself, and said something to the effect "I think that is the first time that I've called him that".

Whether they call him "Bill" (I've heard Colvin do it and Vrabel too) or not they clearly have issues or didn't you see that the LA Times says the Patriots hate BB?

As I was reading this thread, I just heard it on the NFL Network Game of the Week as well. I love Colvin more and more every week.

Happens all the time in the playoffs. Teams get so amped up before the game that they empty their tanks by halftime. Ask Donovan McPuke.

Especially this team. Sky high in the first quarter =emotionally spent in the Fork Q as you so nicely put it.

That is something I noticed about this team. When you watch NFL films, you hear/see all of these teams whooping it up. The Pats come out jacked up but they are on a relatively even kiel. They don't get too pumped up after a great play and they don't get too down after a negative play (obviously there are exceptions). Watching the GOTW footage of the divisional game, the Chargers sideline was sky high until the tide began to turn, even a little bit. They were emotionally spent, as well as physically spent on defense by the fourth quarter.

It also indicates that a defensive player like Colvin knows a hell of a lot more about play calling than Josh McDaniels , who is supposed to be the offensive coordinator.

I would have hoped that it would have been McDaniels to come up with something like that, and not Rosey Colvin. But, apparently McDaniels did not.


It's pretty sad when a defensive player has to come up with an offensive suggestion that , DID prove to be right, instead of the OC.

Doesn't say much, at least IMO, about the OC's abilities.

Yeah, I'm sure Josh never thought of it 'til he heard Colvin...

Well, apparently McDaniels did not suggest it, Colvin did.

I doubt McDaniels would have done it in the way it was done from Colvin's suggestion.

What we do know is that COLVIN suggested it to BB.

We have no idea, at all, if McDaniels even thought of it.

Do you have to over react to everything ? So Colvin shouted something out about the offense. It doesn't mean Belichick listened. It doesn't mean he hadn't thought of it. It doesn't even mean he heard Colvin. Colvin shouted something. That's the end of the story.

There have been more than a few games over the years where I wondered where our pass rush was. If he needs it BB pulls it out in the 4th quater. Watching those idiots rush Brady down after down I knew Belichick was smirking inside. He would never have done that ... Except for a game in ?Denver I've never seen our guys suck wind like that early in the game.

Of all the stupid decisions ... blowing his players out like that was the worst.
