Pats place 6 players on PUP

Mike Reiss‏@MikeReiss

Team places following players on active/physically unable to perform list: Mankins, Spikes, Vollmer, Fells, Pryor, Ballard (per @MikeRodak).

Injured players reported today for eval. The good news is no Gronk and the team says he is good to go.

Mostly expected, but Vollmer does worry me. With Light gone, it would be big for the team if he could stay healthy this year.

Not good to see Spikes and Vollmer there. Vollmer is especially important now with Light gone. Spikes had a good post-season and we really need him in our D this season.

For those (like me) who need annual reminders on how the PUP list works, Reiss points out that "These players can come off PUP list at any time during camp."

Pryor still not healthy? Brace is happy.

Re: Pats place 6 players on PUP

At this juncture a couple of them could be days or weeks away from being cleared. Apparently they were interested in Shiancoe only his asking price remains high. That doesn't make me feel all warm and fuzzy about Fells, although due to his time with Josh he shouldn't take too much time to get up to speed if and when he's ready. They have bodies to replace Mankins and even Vollmer short term. The third TE no so much.

spikes will be fine

He's already missed 12 games in his career with an assortment of injuries. Sample size is still small, but it doesn't exactly indicate a durable player. I just assume that he's going to miss a handful of games and hope for the best from there.

Re: Pats place 6 players on PUP

Not worried about players on the PUP the first week of training camp. Belichick frequently holds out veterans who are rehabbing offseason injuries or surgeries just to not rush them back. Talk to me next weekend and then we can get a better idea of who is really injured and who is just being eased back into it.

All these were expected.

wake me up when there's something of actual, real importance....ok, back to tales of the little chicken

Now is it just me or does undefeated seem more possible this year than it did in 08??

It's definitely not just you, as cbssports mentions it, nbc (profootballtalk) has us on their top 2 teams list, etc...

Many fans are feeling optimistic, and that is due to the success of the offense, last yr's results (which don't mean a thing), the return of JMcD, and the defensive draft picks and hopefulness for improvement.

Just a reminder though (including myself at times), it is a long season. There will be injuries, there will be setbacks, and there will likely be losses.

I don't even want to think anything at all about any kind of possibility of those words. As fans, we need to focus on them staying healthier this year, having some luck, and going from there.

I think it will be a challenge for Belichick too, to try and keep some of the younger players grounded.

Re: Pats place 6 players on PUP

These are the players that aren't expected on the field for the first training camp practice. That's about all we can read into it. The exception, of course, is Ballard, who we won't be seeing this season.

Perhaps more interestingly (or more of a relief) is that Gronk apparently will not start training camp on active/PUP.

2012 NFL training camp -- Logan Mankins of New England Patriots placed on PUP list - ESPN Boston

New England Patriots guard Logan Mankins was among several players placed on the active/physically unable to perform list by the team Monday, according to a league source.

The team also placed linebacker Brandon Spikes, offensive tackle Sebastian Vollmer, defensive tackle Myron Pryor and tight ends Daniel Fells and Jake Ballard on the active/PUP list.

Tight end Rob Gronkowski (ankle) was among the injured veterans reporting to Gillette Stadium on Monday. He was not placed on the active/PUP list, a positive sign for his availability for the start of training camp on Thursday.

I expected Mankins to be on the PUP. I'm not too happy about Spikes and Vollmer however:mad:.

Am I miss-remembering, or do we go through this every camp? Fat guys can't run the sprints in the allotted time. Seems like much ado about nothing.

I want to see Waters at TC. Connolly,Gallery and Cannon should be able to step in for Mankins and Vollmer for a bit assuming Koppen can hold down the Center spot.

If Vollmer and Mankins aren't practicing by late August, I'll be a bit concerned they will start season on PUP.:bricks:

Spikes needs to stay healthy, otherwise Hightower will be taking that starting ILB spot very quickly
