since a lot of attn is being paid to the colts D , thought i would create this thread. Why no talk about the colts o ? because manning has struggled.. ? Well he threw 3 picks against the chiefs but was 30-35 . Against the ravens he struggled but that is a great defense and in the last drive he held the ball for 7 mins and closed out the game. And we dont have ed reed and mcallister
So how are we going to matchup with their receivers ? just cant say peyton struggles in the playoffs..
samuel and hobbs really got burned the last time with harrison and wayne .
so what can/will the pats do about it ?

I think that the DBs made some nice plays and some atrocious plays. The safety blitzes were great. Samuel made a few big deflections. Hobbs made some TD saving plays. But we cant count on the Colts dropping balls all over the place. The Chargers WR's were BAD with their hands last Sunday. That wont happen with Harrison and Wayne. We've gotta stop the run, I have been becoming less and less confident in our run stuffing defense. We can bend like we did last week but we often pulled through with some sacks or an INT or pass deflections to end drives. We need that again, big turnovers and loads of pressure on Manning if we can!

This is the part of the game that scares me to death... Looking at the last two games against Indy 2006 and
2005 we have forced only 2 punts. That is just brutal.

There was the odd turnover and missed FG to keep the scores down but relying on turnovers or missed kicks is not a solid strategy. To some degree the 05 result can be tossed away, new team, new players but IMO the Colts really believe they can score against the Pats. I think we have to keep them under 24 points to win the game, to accomplish this the Pats D must change tactics or raise their overall level of play.

I hope Manning has another bad game, the longer it is close the more pressure starts to work in our favor. The D is starting to gel but they really have to keep the Colts from marching up and down at will, 3rd downs will be crucial.

Don't believe the hype.

The last colts pats game the front 7 was all over manning.

One thing I continually wondered during that game was if the patriots were holding back something, saving something for down the road, if that's why they weren't trying to press the receivers.

One thing I could see is maybe Chad Scott pressing Reggie Wayne to disrupt the timing instead of having Hobbs on him.

I don't know if Asante is capable of doing this on Harrison.

I'm sure there is gonna be something, but I firmly believe the Patriots will force all throws underneath and let nothing go behind the 2ndary.

dont know if you heard some of the post game after that game but manning was saying that they won the toss they got the ball first but we were able to stop and get a lead.
he said the same thing after the 2005 game when he said we have never gotten a lead against these guys...
iam sure they will come out aggresive throwing downfield to get lead...
our 3rd down D against them last 2 times has been quite bad which scares me a lot without a physical safety like rodney and bump and run corners ..
i know in the 2003 AFC playoff game BB switched LAW and harrison ..law played safety and harrison corner for quite a few snaps because law was a better cover guy..maybe they will try something like that

maybe we'll see sanders play some bump and run. looks like he has the size. plus how will the refs call it? i think they'll let them play.

really depends how we can stop the run with the front 7...iam not sure how good we have been with that after we lost seau

It is a good offense, capable of doing anything an offense needs to do, and doing it well.
We will play a defense that has them 'take what we give them', which is mostly their philosphy anyway. However, we can afford to choose what we give them, because we can defend anything they do at least reasonably effectively. (This is the bend portion of the bend but dont break)
Then we will disguise, and they will take what they THINK we are giving them, and it will not be what we are giving them. (This is the dont break portion)

The Colts will move the ball and score some points because they have enough talent on offense to make plays even when they are defended properly. They will not win the game with their offense, because we will defend many plays properly, but will also put them in positions where they misunderstood how we were defending them.

Mechanically, I expect to see a lot of 3-3-5 base D. Last year (the first time Ive ever seen it) we played that with 2 ILBs and 1 OLb, rather than 2 OLBs and 1 ILB. It didnt seem to work real well (we took out the weakside OLB, and they ran weakside outside a lot) but when we put Colvin back in at weak OLB they did nothing on that. By the way, this D didnt work solely because Duane Starks was the corneron that side and got destroyed time and again.
Just a big guess here, but I would expect to see some of this:
3-3-5 nickel base. Bruschi will play exclusively strongside ILB. Vrabel will play the weakside but move around between an ILB and OLB position. We will have the run defended on the weakside with Vrabel and Seymour or Warren and a corner that can force the edge and not be blocked by a WR. (I think Chad Scott may see more time because of this)
If they throw against this, Vrabel is coming from an undetermined spot if he blitzes (most likely a blitz if the back stays in and cover if he releases to that side) and Colvin should get a lot of pressure coming off the TE side, because they will be getting the TE into coverage, and it is very difficult to try to slide a G to Seymour and a T to Colvin.

One other thing. Do not forget Jarvis Green as a pass rushing mismatch against their interior OL. He had a monster game rushing from the NT position in one of the Colt playoff games, after having almost never done that all year. Ithink BB sees a mismatch there, and will go back to the well.

Not concerned...
This will be the best performing facet of the game. Best front seven unit in the league combined with BB and staff setting the table and play-calling will out-do what Dungy and the Colts offense can come up with.
Don't worry!
