If say they lose their program for 2 years does he come back? Go to another team? This thought just occurred to me and I don't think it's really been brought up by anyone afaik...

Just like any college coach. If he becomes a god by winning a BCS Championship, he gets to write his own ticket. If the situation becomes almost uninhabitable, he can jump ship.

His deal is a decent one.

O'Brien's five-year deal calls for a base salary beginning at $950,000 in 2012 and increasing by five percent each year. He'll also receive $1 million per year for radio and TV obligations and $350,000 per year from a Nike deal, bringing his total compensation to $2.3 million in Year One. That figure would make O'Brien the Big Ten's sixth highest-paid coach, behind Ohio State's Urban Meyer, Iowa's Kirk Ferentz, Michigan's Brady Hoke, Nebraska's Bo Pelini and Wisconsin's Bret Bielema.

O'Brien can also earn up to $200,000 per year in incentives, including a potential $104,500 bonus if the Nittany Lions make a bowl game next season. O'Brien would make $47,500 for a division title, $76,000 for a Big Ten championship and $85,500 for a BCS national championship in the 2012 season.

I meant what do you think he does if PSU football gets shut down for a couple of years?

Can anyone see him back with the Pats or is he definitely going elsewhere?

I dont think robertweathers knows that the death penalty is in college football.

well..first he takes a nice hot shower followed by a thorough delousing...and then he goes out on the open market..."..Penn wha?...huh? what is this "state" to which you refer??..

He needs to shower alone

I do and I am old enough to know what happened to SMU. BOB stays under contract regardless.

PSU is not getting shut down.

The DP is only for a year.

If PSU does get the death penalty he would presumably still collect his salary. If he accepts another position elsewhere then I would think that he then forfeits that PSU paycheck. I would think that he could get around that by taking a job as a 'consultant' or something similar.

I think that we as fans have a tendency to look at things as simply being the most prestigious, or best chance of winning and being a champion - and forget that this is how these people earn a living in a very unforgiving profession that tends to have limited windows of opportunity.

It's not as simple as somebody offering O'Brien a job if there should be no football at Penn State; they would still need to make it worth walking away from the money that Penn State is obligated to pay him.

BTW, listening to EEI right now and Shepard is going off on PSU big time...seems that the board of trustees have come out and vehemently declared that Joe Paterno's statue will stay where it is ...they say a lifetime of achievement should not be trashed because of a lapse in judgement...I really have to wonder what the hell is in the water over there in Pennsylvania

The way Western PA sees it, decades of coaching a game > shrugging your shoulders and looking the other way when you're told children are being raped under your nose

contrast THAT with the insane animosity Steeler fans have for Belichick and the horrible spygate incident...I mean, they unanimously scream for Belichick being thrown out of the league and all the Patriots seasons being declared null and void because of a memo disagreement, yet child raping gone unstopped at least from 1998 and probably from the 70's when Sandusky started his kids foundation...THAT is nothing but a tiny blemish, an inconsequential bump on the road to Pennsylvanian Paradise...strange people out there...

What happened? The same thing that happened to JoePa: misplaced priorities.

When any institution, be it a school, a corporation, or whatever else becomes more important than individuals than problems are inevitable.

It's one thing to cover up for his friend and colleague. It's a whole different matter to cover up for him and set him up to continue with what he was doing to innocent kids. That's indefensible.

Why would anybody let their kids go to unhappy valley is beyond me.

There is no defense.

The truth is that Joe Paterno was an enabler of a pedophile for the simple reason of big-time college football money and his legacy.

Simply put, now his legacy is that he enabled a pedophile.

How ironic.

I'm glad more people are getting to see how far Pennsylvania football fans are detached from reality. I've had to deal with these idiots my whole life. Belichick and Brady are the biggest scums alive but Joe-Pa and Roethlisberger just made a couple little mistakes. Okay guys.....

Penn State deserves all the negativity that has and will continue to come their way in the future.

That's easy: because if you live in Pennsylvania, it's your flagship state university. There is simply no substitute for that.

I feel sorry for the many students and professors at that university who are disgusted by the way their administration sold its moral compass. They don't deserve to have their degrees and scholarship tainted by the label of Pedophilia U.

Europeans are always baffled at the way American universities run semi-professional athletic organizations. Increasingly, I am too.

That's one hell of "a lapse in judgement". There are some seriously sick and confused people out that way. I can't begin to assume that everyone in PA agrees with this decision.
