I wonder if Tom Brady will look at that contract and go "man, if only I was a little younger... !"

Yeah he missed out. I think though if he cuts a few corners here and there and doesn't eat out as much, he and Giselle just might be able to squeak by.:)

The deal includes $40 million in the first year and a guaranteed $60 million in the first three years of the contract. That’s the biggest guarantee for any contract in NFL history. After protracted negotiations, Brees has done very well for himself.

Florio also has confirmed the numbers, adding that there are $22 million more in “rolling” guarantees as the contract unfolds.

Drew Brees agrees to five-year, $100 million deal with Saints | ProFootballTalk

That's pretty good coin for the third best QB in the NFL...

His good guy act really should **** off imo. Seems like a guy who doesn't even have the common courtesy of giving the team that gave him another shot a reach around when he is....you know.

These things get ridiculous every year....... in a few years we will have QBs asking for 60-70 mill per year............

40 mill for first year? are u freakin kidding me......

what will happen now is media and fans will start scrutinizing every game played by Brees........ every loss will be blamed on him.......

This deal makes me feel like the Saints ownership is suffering from concussion like symptoms

I like Brees, but wow that's a lot of $.

What's the salary cap, $120M this year? So it's Brees with 33%, the other 52 guys get to split the remaining 66%? Can you say 'locker room strife'?

What are the details of Brady's contract, 4 yrs, $72M, $48.5M guaranteed? Given that he was one year from free agency I would say these two deals are similar.

Additionally, what isn't in the original contract details is that Brady got paid up front for 2012. I forget what he was given, something like $10M.

right place at the right time at the right age

His cap hit isn't $40M. The signing bonus, prob $20M, gets spread over the life of the deal. So the cap hit is closer to $25M in year one...roughly.

you think that's good? Aaron Rodgers is also smiling from ear to ear. And he's five years younger!

Manning's average if all pans out health wise next March is $19.2M, just to put it in perspective. Going to be hard for NO to manage the cap though because it is what it is on a 5 year totally new money deal. For every million under $20 the cap hit is in the front end it will be over on the back end. If Brady gets $60M in new money on a 3 year extension next spring, he will average around $18.8 against the cap over the 5 year term - with the team having the flexibility to manage his hits as they choose (including not topping $20M before 2016 or 2017).

The $40M in year one isn't his cap hit, it's his take home between salary and signing bonus. His average cap hit for the next 5 years would be $20M, but they will likely structure it so the hit is less for the first two years and more for the last 2.

The signing bonus is likely larger than the salary and the cap # this year closer to what it was under his tag, $16.4M. Teams can structure these deals to best suit their cap position going forward. His cap won't be $25M unless they for some reason want his deal frontloaded to have lesser cap hits in 4-5 years...

Nope, since he's only about 17 months older. He will get the same new money average on any extension, or within spitting distance with something else sweetened (guaranteed $$, first 3, whatever).

Good point.

And I don't care what Bob Kraft says, I swear the cap is going up significantly when the new TV deal kicks in so I don't think they'll be in cap hell. I guess it helps that they don't have those draft picks to pay...

I am a little bit surprised that Brees held out for the most possible. I think it makes sense that he is near the top in salaries but I wouldn't have expected him to be the #1 highest paid player. It makes me wonder what NO originally was holding out for (I assume they were the side that caved in).

2 crimes for the Saints this year...the bounty and paying a QB ridiculous money.

They should save some of that for defense....the Saints are looking like the mid
2000s Colts who paid the price of losing talent by overpaying on 1 QB.
