Problem is we don't know how many essential expensive players each team has that are needed to be extended etc. this season. Or those that come due next year such that rolling millions fwd is the thing to do.

I think the predicted flat caps through 2014 are ample reason to be rolling as much cap forward as possible. Teams that can't will be in some distress just from the simple yearly increases inherent in many contracts. And you can only postpone absorbing those so long. And if you push them too far forward by the time the cap does begin to increase in 2015 you will already have spent it...

Not really. If you exclude Jacksonville as an outlier (and statistically they are way outside the curve) then the Pats are quite a bit closer to the top than to the bottom. And if you consider the serious playoff contenders, only Green Bay is in comparable cap shape. Baltimore, New Orleans, Atlanta, San Diego, the Giants, San Francisco, Pittsburgh, Detroit, Chicago and Houston all have $4M (roughly) or less of cap room. The Ravens have virtually no cap space, with Ray Rice a holdout and Joe Flacco wanting a big contract.

The Pats have been one of the most active teams in the NFL this offseason, adn they are in very good cap shape. It's an impressive.

Brady's has the perfect situation from a football perspective, and he's too smart and too rich to mess it up. He restructured willingly, as he's done many times. I can see the media playing that situation up, but I really can't envision any likelihood of Brady going elsewhere as a UFA.

I think that if you are going to build a perennial contender in today's NFL then you need (1) certain impact players to be willing to take favorable deals - lucrative perhaps, but still favorable, and (2) a bunch of guys to be willing to accept roles within the context of the team instead of maximizing their personal stats. The Pats seem to be doing as good a job of achieving those 2 things as anyone in the NFL.

I still have a gut feeling that Belichick is going to make a trade for a significant player if the opportunity presents itself, a veteran with a big salary on a weaker team such as a Jared Allen. I think that like the 2007 move for Moss he wants to put them completely over the top and dominate the league.

I think it reflects the fact that they feel confident they can get a new deal in the next year or so and that they don't plan on tagging him ever again. I honestly believe that Brady is going to retire a Patriot in 5-6 years with at least 2 more rings and the record for wins by a QB.

Oh, I never did. I have always said this isn't his last contract and he would get another incremental extension that probably takes him to retirement, 2-3 or more years (for cap purposes) on top of the two that remain. The restructure just means they have to (no tag flexibility come 2015 and because Bill isn't taking a $22M QB cap hit - let alone back to back ones - against a $124M cap) which gives Tom the upper hand leverage wise. And unlike some QB's I trust Tom with the upper hand because he's never been self absorbed and greedy. He will get paid fairly, but he won't be looking to reset the bar exponentially like some guys do.

I should know better than to doubt you on matters such as these as you've been proven right over time repeatedly, especially to this matter - but until I see Brady's next contract, I'm of the belief he could take a significant hometown discount, one greater than his first extension.

He arguably took a slight discount in his most recent re-upping, and at the time he was weighing several factors that pushed him to get about as much as he could: recent traumatic injury put things in perspective; a duty to the NFLPA to help set the bar and get what he deserved; and arguably maybe not seeing dividends from the club for taking less than market the last time he extended (ie, letting Deion Branch go first time around).

Going into his next - and perhaps final - contract negotiation some of those issues may be gone. What's left is a guy who just wants to win at the end of the day, and might opt to take noticeably less than what he's worth to help facilitate that. Obviously not drastically much less, again, he has always wanted to be compensated in fair range, but maybe less than last time around.

By putting it on the old credit card. They aren't going to gain much if any cap space on a deal that averages in the $20M range when his tag hit is already $16M. Unless of course they sign a 6 year deal with a 33 year old QB who reportedly wants it front loaded with close to $70M in hand the first 3 ala Manning's last Indy deal (minus the one sided escape clause). Then they have to hope the cap rises substantially in the backend where they've had to dump amortization on top of high average salary and nothing happens to him in the interim.

Much like Brady Brees got credit for playing out his $60M deal without biatching. The difference is Tom was always willing to work with this organization to do incremental deals to make each ensuing deal as manageable as possible while Brees never wanted to restructure and extend early because his agent is Tom Condon and he doesn't do discounted deals for any reason. Hell, Manning was likely to miss some if not all of last season in Indy and he still saw $26M up front...

That happened largely because Condon would never entertain an extension before his last deal played out and because of all the bonus conversions Indy had to do along the way to afford that deal early on they were in a situation where his tag was in that range already. The deal structure allowed Indy to take a $16M cap hit in 2011 and only be left to absorb $10M in dead cap atop a rookie QB's cap hit (because they amortized his option bonus in advance and were credited when it wasn't exercised). The tradeoff was he saw $26M in year 1 and would have seen a record breaking $23.4M per average in the first three. That is the number Brees/Condon is again attempting to approach.

The Saints caught a break this season when the tags all dropped by roughly $2M. But they just lost whatever leverage that gained them in the artibrator's ruling that any means not each but all. The Saints thought they could tag him twice at less than $20M per for a two year average cost of $18M. Now a second tag by them becomes a third lifetime tag at 144% or $23M for a two year average cost of almost $20M per. And the new debate will be can he even be tagged by NO a third time which would be at $28M which would bring the three year average up to almost $23M. That pretty much dictates that if they want any kind of cap flexibility it starts out with Drew averaging $20M+ and seeing more than three times that in the first three (Manning was going to see $70M). Otherwise he will roll the dice.
