Can we resign Asante?

He might be unhappy, but in one year he would earn substantially more than he has earned during his entire lifetime, and he would be a free agent the next year. Besides, he can't afford to sit at home, this will be hist first big pay day, and any contract he gets in 2008 will be based on his play in 2007.

I think that the Patriots should put a non-exclusive franchise tag on him. With so few corners on the market, there might actually be a team out there that is willing to part with the TWO first round draft picks it would take to sign him. If not, we get him for one year for less than $8M.

Transitional tag is the way to go, if he washes in at 9-16. Contrary to popular belief the Pats will pay for an elite. Maybe not quite what he could get elsewhere, but close. And for less than 500k/year as long as the up front money is there, why would he leave? But I dont think he will come in at the top 8. So tag him, control where he goes, and get something for him.

Not looking good...it's starting to head down the Law/Vinatieri/Branch/Milloy road...

Patriots CB Asante Samuel, quoted on Newsday.com regarding his ongoing contract discussions with the Patriots, and how they are nowhere near being on the same page: “We've talked to them about a new contract. What they offered isn't even worth discussing. It's disappointing. You want to believe they know what you've done. So you hope for the best, but you end up feeling underappreciated. You feel disrespected, especially how they come at you with so much negative stuff. They show you such a low regard. I took it personally, at first. You'd think I would have been around this team long enough to realize it's all about business.”

Transition tag is an IDIOTIC way to go. If we don't match the transition offer, we lose Asante's services without any compensation. Worse, they're now allowed to include poison pills in a transition offer (like: you get a $10M bonus each season that you play seven or more games in New England).

If we're willing to let Asante Samuel test out the market like that, then there's no point in taging him at all. That way we save the tag, and we have a better chance at reaching a long term deal with him (since he won't like the tag).

hmmmm. I must have been mistaken to think that. I thought that if we didn't match, we got compensation based on the tender offer. And over 2.5 mil, its a first and third rounder. My bad. Also, I thought poison pills were eliminated after last season.....

Hmm, I'll have to research the no compensation thing. The bengals used the transition tag on Takeo Spikes, but I thought they got a compensation pick.

As for Samuel, the more I look at this the more I think they need to franchise him if they can't come to an agreement. Lots of teams are apparently salivating over the chance to sign him.

His situation is far different than Givens, CBs of his caliber are harder to come by and are paid accordingly. Guys like Givens can be found late in the draft, obviously, but they can also be found on the street like Gaffney. It takes a while to develop CBs and replacements are much more difficult to find. look at the pats the past couple of years and what we were signing with all of our DB injuries.

Smart money says we franchise him. I'd be shocked if it's otherwise, he is just too valuable an asset to let walk.

*I just checked and found out that there IS compensation for losing a transition tagged player. The Bengals received a compensation pick at the end of the 3rd round in 2004 for losing Takeo Spikes (The got #96 and used it on Landon Johnson LB Purdue, it was #96 because the Texans forfeited #33, they used it the year before to draft RB Tony Hollins in the supplemental draft)

You get the compensatory pick whether you tag a player or not.

In fact, the Patriots are likely to get some good compensatory picks in THIS year's draft (even though we didn't tag anybody last year). The best that you can get is at the end of the third round, and I am hoping that we get something like one each at the end of rounds 3,4 and 6.

Unfortunately, neither McGinest nor Givens had great seasons, and the committee has never awarded a high pick for a kicker (obviously I hope that Adam is the first).

I'm not sure if teams who receive compensatory draft picks from other teams (for restricted and franchise players) are also eligible for compensatory picks from the league for those same players. Perhaps somebody else knows this?

BTW, I am sorry for using the word idiotic

I think the upcoming game will have a huge say in whether we can sign Asante or not. Since he'll line up opposite of Marvin for most of the game, he'll have a huge task in front of him. If he thinks he's worth top 5 CB money, here's his chance to prove it.

Not sure how this all fits with the tag/no tag thing. This is not my area of expertise. But, it looks like we should get a first and third for Asante, if he leaves.

Sadly, this is only for restricted free agents (after three years). Asante has four years under his belt and is unrestricted.

If he leaves other than through a trade, or as a non-exclusive franchise player, we would (at best) receive compensatory draft picks.

I'm resigned to the fact he isn't coming back. When he signs with someone else it will be time to move on. He'll be motivated for thr colts tho

I say we franchise him.
If he is not happy we can trade him for picks.
