I have some thoughts on why so many people appear to dislike the Patriots so much, both other fans, and people in the media:

1)First of all, it always happens when teams have long runs of continued dominance. People - and this means all people, including the media, are fans of their own teams first - and are either openly admiting this as they spew critisizms, or are trying to hide it or suggest it's not a factor in their views, but that's all bull. Football is a passionate sport, and being a fan of a football teams evokes passion from it's fanbase. Therefore, when the competition is accomplishing what every fan of every other team dreams about their team accomplishing, well, it's hard to just accept. It causes dissappointment, frustration, jealousy, anger, and hatred. Yes, hatred, because people tend to be just so over-the-top with their passion for their team. I believe that's part of the reason Bill Polian appears so mentally ill in his behavior - because he's so over-the-top obssessed with his team succeeding that's he's lost all care about anything else, including reasonableness, and his behavior - well, that and he's just an ignorant loser too, but I digress.
2)Secondly, Watching the same team repeat it's success over and over does get boring for fans from other towns. I remember watching the niners in the eighties and into the nineties, when they won the championship 5 times, and I had no hatred of them, I actually admired them, but I was getting pretty tired of watching the same team do the same thing so often. It just goes with the territory of continued success in pro sports - other fans get tired of watching it. If they can't have their own team win, then they at least want their interest to be kept up by new and interesting story lines. Now it's great for the fanbase from the city that is succeeding, but it gets a little old for everyone else. So that contributes to all this apparant anti-patriots stuff you may hear.
3)Thirdly, and I think this may be the biggest, yet least obvious thing going on here, I think most people still don't understand what the Patriots are doing. They don't understand how a team without many stars, and with no impressive stats are able to win over teams with those things. Most people take very simplistic views of the world and the Patriots require you to do some real studying to figure them out. You'll hear people say all the time, 'The NFL is a coach's league' - meaning that the head coaches of each team play a major roll in determing the outcome of games and ultimately an organization's long term success or lack there of. Yet, despite apparantly recognzing this, whenever teams chances of winning are evaluated, there is very little focus put on who has the better head coach. You don't often hear someone say 'Well, they definately have more playmakers on their team, but the Patriots have such a superior coach that I think he will make a huge difference and the Pats will overcome that and win because of that advantage' - yeah, once a rare while, but not most of the time. They just don't focus on that huge advantage. And make no mistake about it, that's what Belichick is - A huge advantage. Without him, none of this would even be happening! But, as we all know, it's much more than that. It's the deep, balanced roster, it's the intelligent brand of player we develop, it's the unselfishness and spreading the ball around, and not running up scores that all lead to not having big 'stats'. It's the precision and efficiency, even in pressure situations. We don't need big names or accolades. If someone just fits into the system, then the system will win, almost doesn't matter who is filling the role. Gostkowski can do what adam did. Mankins can do what andruzzi did. Koppen can do what woody did. CAldwell can do what Branch did. Dillon can do what antwain smith did. Sauerbrun can do what josh miller did. Graham can replace Fauria. Asante can replace ty law. Seau can replace Roman Phifer. Gaffney can replace Givens or david patten. Brady can replace Bledsoe (and quite well I might add! :) ) Wilfork can replce Washington. Rodney can replace Milloy. It really doesn't matter. But of course - everyone outside of New England doesn't realize this - even after all this time. They keep saying, like marty schottenheimer said after beating us last year - sooner or later it has to catch up to you! - well, marty, no, it doesn't!

What this all means is, everybody keeps thinking - 'oh good, we're gonna be rid of those annoyingly successful patriots now - they've lost terry glenn, or they've lost milloy and law, or they've lost ted washington, or they've lost branch and givens - on and on it goes. But then we win anyway, and they feel shocked and confused and embarrassed and they think we got 'lucky' and it can't keep up and 'the better team didn't win' and on and on - because they don't understand. They haven't figured out the repeating machine of success that secretly keeps chugging along - that is the new england patriots. ya know what? - there has never, ever, been a dynasty, that after 5-6 years of success was in a BETTER position to keep winning then when they started until this team. Realistically, there's no reason this team won't be able to keep making runs at the title for at least the next 7-8 years, and probably continuing on and on past that. I don't think the rest of the world has any idea what they are in for. still. If you think it's normal for other teams fans, media included to hate the pats after a while cuz their sick of their success, imagine how they will feel say, 5-6 years from now if we've won say another 3 titles? They are gonna get really, really, really sick of us!
Prepare for the hatred to grow and grow - it comes with dominance. we are becoming the yankees of football, except we're not just buying our success!

Good insights. Thanks for the post.

I remember the Celtics of the 60s and early 70s -- when I went to college most guys were from outside NE and they didn't care much about the Celts winning year after year. The one thing they *did* like was Johnny Most calling the games. They'd turn off the TV sound and we'd turn on the radio and everybody could be a Celts fan for a week or two (unless they were from LA or Philly).

Maybe if we could get Gil and Gino piped into peoples' homes around the nation, the Patriots would become "America's Team" !!!

:yeahthat:

Hopefully, the Colts continue to be our "Red Sox' (pre-'04 of course) a nemesis that continues to be close but not close enough.
Annother factor is jealousy that other teams look at the success of the Patriots and wonder how come they couldn't be as successful. I think the success is a result of a perfect alignment of a great owner dedicated to winning, a coach who learned from previous mistakes and knows what he wants and has a player personnel guru who is in sync and a QB with a burning desire to always win as well as a team concept seen on few teams in this league......It's even more impressive to reload every year in a salary cap era......

I think that we as a society have such a short attention span that we need something different. Other than Pats fans, no one wants to see the Patriots win another superbowl. That's why the national media jumps all over a new successful team only to abandon them once they lose.

That's why I'm a little miffed about why people don't like the Pats. The Cowboys are "America's Team"

Why? I never liked the Cowboys before, during and after their run. So, to have them claim they're "America's Team" is a little presumptuous. The Pats are comprised of a bunch of "blue collar" football players and the they are a more U.S.A. oriented team. I figured the Pats attitude (team before individual) would take root in the minds of football fans. But, I guess they want to see gaudy stats (Peyton) or get soap opera material (T.O.) than actual smart football played by hard working players.

I say, whatever...Let the baby have its bottle. I'm thoroughly enjoying this run! The media and other fans can pound sand. :p

I think #3 is the most important part here.

I like to think that the less vocal sports fans appreciate the patriots while the more vocal think they're boring and wish they had asshats like TO. of course we hear more from the vocal crowd.

Great, insightful post. I beleive most national media people are lazy and do not take the time to look at this TEAM. We could lose but if we had a wife beater or some nitwit doing pushups in his driveway we would get front and center. They take the path of least resistant. I believe we have real personalities on this team - however it takes WORK to research.

Gotta remember too, that more non-football fans watch the Superbowl than any other game by a large margin.

With so many fans who truly do not understand the game, it's not surprising that the media wants teams like the Colts ("Everyone wants to see Peyton finally get a ring") and the Saints("the feel good story of the year") to be the teams in the Superbowl.

When you consider they may put up as many points as an NBA game, the networks see this matchup as a winner.

In this age of short attention spans and "sound bite" new,who wants to see BB in his cut-off hoodie and his Pats win a 19-3 game?

Nobody except Pats fans want to see the Patriots win on Sunday.
Just like nobody outside Chicago wants to see the Bears win vs the Saints.

the hate is mainly because the pats dont give any info , not any nonsense to chew on and lets face it no ancient history of winning like the steelers and 9ers and cowboys . The media hats are lost in that history of these football cities so they believe NE as an aberration which just doesnt seem to away. With the colts you have manning and his whole family to talk abt, with bears well 85 bears ,walter payton, ditka etc etc. For NO , no lack of stories . Pats ? what is there they can talk about ..not much ? because they dont want to break down the team see how it is working in practice, how it has been able to sustain it this long because BB doesnt share any of this.
if BB came and berated the media like parcells people will pulling for the pats to get more soundbytes in the SB week...thats unfortunately the nature of the sports. people love personalities not good players..and i blame ESPN a lot for this.

In addition to the factors listed in this thread, there is the fantasy football factor, some great teams (like the 60's Packers and Pats) don't conform to the rules of fantasy football, they just win. The explosion of fantasy football has dumbed down fans about what is important in football.

Since the Pats are a lousy fantasy football team compared to the Chargers or Colts fans can't understand how they would beat these 'superior' teams.

"Conan! What is best in football?"

"Crush the defensive line, see them driven backwards and hear the lamentation of their fans!"

:D

A lot of good additional thoughts added here.

I'll add another one - BB is well known for having read 'The Art of War' and being a big proponent of it. He was very impressed with the idea that the battle is already won or lost before the fight - through the preparation that is done ahead of time.

What alot of people don't realize - they don't connect the dots here - is that this is why BB does alot of the things he does - the not giving anything away on the injury report, the giving nothing but praise to the opponents in the media, the rote, no substance, always saying the same things answers to questions in press conferences - which often make him appear rude, the wearing the hoodie, the coldly letting popular players go, all of it - is based on trying to maintain humility, stay focused, give the opponents nothing to be motivated about, sticking to the plan for both winning games and evolving the roster over time, and just keeping his players disciplined and focused on winning one game at a time and not caring about accolades and media attention - they all just want to execute, do their role's job, and win. Everything they all say and do is geared towards giving the opponent nothing!
Often times - they even trick or mislead their opponents into false sense's of security. This is why teams and fans alike continue to get SHOCKED by the pats. and it's also why the losing team is often very, very bitter in defeat - they are still sure they are the better team because they can't see what's happening. They are using the narrow, popular view of what constitutes a successful team. They look for stats and pro bowl births! (sound familar?)

The problem is, the national media can't figure any of this out and if they can, they still can't digest it and change their approach to all this. The media uses the same simplistic measuring stick for success that most people do, and even though they 'learn their lesson' and say 'I'm never picking against the pats again in a big game' - they always forget their lesson and still do - why? because they are so inclined to look at stats and flash, and also - and this is a biggie - they are trying to do MARKETING and the pats are just not an exciting sell. no flash. their machine like precision and silent answers and not showing their hand ahead of time wins championships, but not ratings.

it's all pretty funny if you look at it. the pats want lombardi's. the press wants stories. and never the twain shall meet. hence - media hatred.

If you read other team's or neutral bulletin boards, you will repeatedly hear that people hate the Patriots because they despise Patriots fans. For a variety of reasons, Patriots fans are over-represented on the internet, and are very vocal.

People are tired of hearing us boast and gloat.

this i think is true...i go to indystar very seldom to check out news and there is a lot back and forth going on with pats and colts fans than i have seen here..

I think that may be part of it too but not ahead of the others.

people hate patriots fans because the patriots are winning.

in the eighties, people hated the niners fans.

in the ninties, people hated cowboy fans.

football breeds passionate rivalry which leads to boasting and jealousy.

Ah yes Johnny Most "high above courtside" a true Boston/New England Classic. Every game was a war with the opposing teams beating up our poor Celtics, made Wilt the Stilt a hit man. It was amazing when you watched the tube and listened to him broadcast it was like gee is this guy watching the same game as me. It was great

Very insightful posts, Sam. I agree, not nearly enough emphasis is placed on the mental component of the game. I'm glad to see at least some out there get it.

Keep sending these along. At once, they are both informative and entertaining!

Thanks Fervor - I'm continually amazed that people still haven't 'gotten' what is making the patriots successful and what it's gonna take to stop them.

Unfortunately, there is someone out there that may know, and his name is Eric Mangini. We'll just have to hope that BB's game planning and adjustment capabilities are greater than his, so he'll maintain his edge. I wish he had gone to a team in another division though!
