According to NFL.com, Percy Harvin has requested a trade out of Minny. This is very interesting to me as a Pats fan because there was a bunch of talk a few years ago about how the Pats wanted this kid really bad and how Childress nabbed him as sort of a slap in the face to our BB. I'm certainly NOT suggesting that there will be any impact to the Patriots. This is just funny to me because of the relationship (or lack thereof) between BB and the jettisoned Childress. Unfortunately for Harvin, it aint happenin,' kid.

His migraine and injury issues alone pretty much tell me don't trade for him. Not to mention where would we use him anyways? Well besides kick returner which would be a huge cost for us to get him just for that. Then again how much did the Rats spend to get Failbow again?

Putting it out there - what would you guys think of Welker for Harvin? I'm not advocating it since I love Welker and hope to keep him for the remainder of his career.

This would have to be based on a few things.

1)If the Pats don't get a sense that they will find a middle ground with Welker on contract negotiations, we're going to lose him next year anyway. Plus, we'd get younger at the position and gain an explosive kick returner which we've sorely lacked for awhile now.

2)Harvin would take the money that has been on the table for Welker, or less.

Harvin is an Urban Meyer product so BB would get a good insight into him and whether he is worth the risk. Similar to the Hernandez situation in my opinion.

The big issue is the migraines. You can't pay a player that randomly misses games which I think would ultimately rule out Harvin for BB since he likes consistency in his week to week planning.

No need ty

I say "meh."

Migraines? Seroiusly?

No thank you. That's the kind of injury/ailment.. that could prop up at any time.

Nope. Too much of a headache. Yes that pun's intended.

He missed 3 games in 3 years. Migraine fears are overblown

He also IIRC missed quite a bit of practice time due to his migraine issues. That's something BB might not like to deal with in all honesty is not having his key players around for practice going into a huge game.

If Welker held out I would of liked to of had him, but he would be down on the depth chart at this point. He'd actually do really well on the Jets who have no slot WR to speak of.

By "do really well" you mean suddenly have the case of the migraines during the second quarter which causes the Jets offense to collapse like an poorly balanced pyramid of cards... okay I'll agree with you on that.

I think the deal breaker might be the fact that his rookie contract expires at the same time as Spikes and Hernandez which would be the preferred target for extensions.

Retaining those two, in my view, is infinitely more important to the team than having Percy Harvin.

He has a lot of versatility that I think BB would love: slot reciever, deep threat, running back.

Assuming he could grasp the Patriots system the offense would be even scarier

But considering he will want a big long term contract I do not think it would be a likely trade. Unless the plan is to let Hernandez walk (replace with Ballard???)

Terrell Davis suffered from migraines, and he did pretty well.

It would obviously be a consideration, but not a deal breaker.

Until I see improvement on the field, I would however much prefer for the focus of upgrading the roster to be on the other side of the ball.

One other thing to think about: Harvin is presumably demanding a trade because he wants a new contract. If you trade for him then you have to give him a new deal. How is that going to sit with players currently on the team that have not been extended yet, like Hernandez, Vollmer, Chung and Spikes?

A couple of points that have been brought up in this thread

1. I'd make the Welker for Harvin trade right now straight up in a nanosecond. Harvin is an elite talent that would be as good as Welker in the slot, but with a better YAC potential. He would be huge upgrade to our return game, and he's younger. And finally his contract is perfectly set up for him to traded, and given a cap friendly extension with a $9MM signing bonus that they were going to be paying Welker.

2. I think the Pats are perfectly happy with Welker's situation right now. I doubt they see a long term contract with him as a priority, unless its a very team friendly deal.

3. I doubt that Spike's extension is high on their list of priorities either. Spikes is a one dimensional player who has missed a number of game in each of his first 2 seasons, and plays a position where the Pats already have good depth (Mayo, Hightower, Fletcher). I think they would like to keep him, but I doubt very much the Pats would pay a penny more than their own assessment of his value to keep him.

I hope the Vikings tell Harvin to suck it up and that he's not going anywhere.

Which is an upgrade over what they have now
