Re: Bedard: Vollmer did have a back procedure and details of Gronks deal

There simply aren't a lot of "small" back "procedures." My guess is that we're talking about a couple of cortisone shots or chiropracty.

We haven't had much heat yet, and I for one don't miss it, except in out of psynch spurts in between periods of raw and sometimes monsoonish rains. April was June. May was April. June's been a combination of the two thus far. God only knows what July will entail. August could well herald October with summer finally making a brief appearance in September. Wonder if we will experience another snowless winter or get buried this year...

I don't think most Pats fans should complain if freak snowstorms blow through Foxboro during all of the Pats' home games. :D

I doubt it. Those would be termed treatments and not a procedure. Could have been planing down a disc ala Manning. He had that done earlier (2010 off season) prior to his multiple procedures ordeal of the 2011 off season (the last of which didn't work requiring more invasive approach). They do the less complicated procedures with a scope these days unless they encounter complications in the process. I think the cortisone and chiropracty went on in season and while it provided some relief it didn't rectify the underlying problem.

Re: Bedard: Vollmer did have a back procedure and details of Gronks deal

My sister had back surgery. She had a disc replaced with titanium by the best doctor at the time, who was located in Montpellier, France.

Comme ca:
Cervical Artificial Disc Replacement Technologies

She is a vet so standing upright and doing 3 hour surgery used to mean popping codine pills like candy. Now she doesn't require any pain control to stand for hours. The surgery was a godsend for her.

After she had the procedure done, she needed to stay in a rehabilitation center for a couple weeks healing up and doing physical therapy. But about a month after the surgery she was doing well. After 6 months she was completely normal.

Granted, she wasn't blocking DLs in the NFL but she didn't receive 6 months of physical therapy/training either. If his surgery was right at the end of season, I would also expect Vollmer back (no pun intended!) before the season starts because I doubt he had anything done that was more invasive than this.

Already noted. And Bedard has since tweeted for clarification that the back procedure happened shortly after the season ended, so 3 months ago. The more immediate short term concern seems to be rehabbing the ankle, on which he is still visibly limping. The back will represent more of a long term concern (contractually).

For an OL, especially a tackle, those procedures give you reason for worry going forward. Unfortunately, we as fans will never know the severity of the back issues with Vollmer right now. I just sincerely hope they're not chronic.
