Patriots and Gronk agree to 6year/$54 Million Contract

That would seem fairly reasonable. $9M/year makes Gronk the highest paid TE in the NFL by a wide margin, and it rips up 2 years of his rookie deal. But it gives the Pats long term security and it's probably well below what Gronk could get on the open market (probably Mario Williams kind of money).

Happy Dance!:singing:

WOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooooooooooo!!

Stay healthy, Gronk!

Very happy with how proactive they were on this.

Just a note here.... Schefter is calling it an extension, not a new deal. That would mean that Gronk's locked in for 8 years.

That would be even better! But will have to wait and see!

We need to see the details. The total could be 6 or 8 years.

If its a legit 6 year extension, meaning it ends in 2019, it must follow the Mayo model with bonus money now, no new salaries this year and next and then everything increases after that. Gets Rosenhaus his name back out there and Gronkowski happy and probably at low cap costs through 2015 or 16. Its a really smart cap move by New England

This is fantastic news.

Congratulations to Gronk! It's pretty rare for a guy to do what he has done - in two short years, he has established himself as the best player at his position, arguably one of the top ten players in the league and clearly among the most productive players in the game today.

Of course. As I said, it was just a note about Schefter's tweet. The Patriots are so free with information that I'm sure we'll have every detail in 15 minutes or so. ;)

I guess this means the FO doesn't agree with Jermichael Finley's "Gronk has to show me something more" assessment.

Sincerely doubt it's the latter, regardless of Schefter's wording, but would be awesome if true!

Btw, no matter that it's the richest deal for a TE in history; relative to what he'd score on the open market in 2014, this is a downright STEAL.

Wes must be extremely happy for him. :D

6 yr, 54M for a TE.......... Wow. They must really like this kid

But what about Wessy Welker? :p

FWIW it is being reported as a 6 year extension tacked on to the two remaining seasons, SOP for the NEP. New money average is a market setter at $9M per but overall deal averages 8 years at $<7M. The real benefit to him will be in the guaranteed money and it will remain to be seen how the deal is structured (backloaded, frontloaded) and the likelihood he finishes the deal or one or the other is looking for restructure in 4 years...when all the guaranteed money is gone.
