It woud be pretty out of character for the Pats, but then again Gronk is out of character for this planet.

They may think it'll take some pretty proactive effort to keep both him and Hernandez for a long period of time.

Or it could be BS.

I think the Pats have finally learned from their mistakes of letting contracts for good players drag out too long, which only drives up their price...ie; Samuel, Mankins, Welker, etc...the earlier you lock them up, the better, especially when you have an incredible talent like Gronk.

If true, i think we can all agree that's why Welker is without an extension.

More like 1/2 per year, and about 1/3 of the entire contract--but I get your point.

It could be viewed as a 'win-win' for both sides. Give him more now, and have him sign for a reasonable amt for the next few yrs.

He may not be selling himself short if he gets a pay raise from the approx.500k that he was supposed to earn each yr x the next 2 yrs. On top of that, he may have just signed for a nice signing bonus and the security that many players want. He could/should be set for the rest of his life, barring any majorly stupid spending sprees.

Especially those who only have 2 yrs in the league and are barely in their early 20's.

I think that there'd be some envy for sure, but AHern is probably not going to be addressed any time soon. The good thing is that is now gives the team options as they would only have to worry about one of the two, and that isn't even for another 2 seasons.

I'd wait and see how Hernandez pans out over the next 2 years. There may be some variables (sans Welker, hope not) that they want to put into play before trying to determine his market value.

I'm really intrigued about the actual details. For the Pats to redo his contract with two years for a total of $1.15M left, this either had to be for (relatively) low money or for quite a few years.

Or, as it has been brought to my attention, it could be a little new money but no new years. I'd like that a lot less.

That certainly is a possibility, but I'm trying not to allow my mind to fully go there.

I am guessing it was a compromise of sorts that allowed him more money now, with a couple years of 'fair' money later.

As we know though, the devil is in the details, so let's keep our fingers crossed that some kind of positivity comes out in the news tomorrow.

That said, giving him a raise now would reduce the likelihood of having to break the bank for him a year or two down the road. I'd call it a show of good faith.

I would agree ct, and the thought of what you said did cross my mind, as they would be apparently setting something up for later; but the initial excitement of thinking that there was a good shot at an extension now has turned sour.

Even one year would be great, as we'd have him for 3 more seasons.

You'd have to think that we could at least maybe get one yr out of it, but that article and the way that PFT worded it does not sound too promising.

Interesting move. Id imagine they may have simply made his deal similar to that of a 1st rounder rather than continuing on his 4 year deal. The would give him a raise right now and add a third year onto the deal that is a balloon payment worth more than what the projected franchise tender is for a Tight End.

If that is what they did its a great move as it gives the team more time to evaluate him and would put him as a free agent in the 2015 year, which right now is where the Pats have just about everybody. Lets them see where Brady will be at too before they go nuts paying a TE.
