Markell Carter released

This comes as a pretty big surprise this early in the process...especially after we saw how much they paid him just to remain on the practice squad last season! By all accounts, he was progressing well, had bulked up nicely.

Don';t believe all the media hype!

That is kind of a shocker considering how many times he was practice player of the week. Something must have happened.

Color me extremely disappointed.

They must really like what they see from the other 3-4 OLBs. So, this is very good news. They probably released him so early to give him a shot with another team.

A practice squad player and 6th round draft choice from Central Arknsas got released - shouldn't be a big surprise, a shocker or disappointment.

It should teach players not to pass up a opportunity to join another team's 53 to stay on the Pats practice squad - you never know if you'll get another chance. Darryl Richard did that a few years ago and has never played an NFL game.

I wonder if those 20lb he put on this offseason was really muscle mass.

When a late round draft pick gets cut it usually shows why he was a late round draft pick to begin with......there are exceptions of course as many late rounders ended up HOFers, but most of the time reality shows the talent was minimal or borderline for the NFL.

Don't see this--If they saw potential, there is no risk to letting him compete (unless he were the last man on the roster and they need the spot). Injuries will happen and depth is a priority. I suspect they soured on his development progress for some reason.

Rapoport:
Those who asked if #Patriots cut Markell Carter to make room for Andre Carter... not yet. Carter's rehab is going well, but nothing set yet

Count me among the "disappointed" for all the reasons listed above. However, if you want to put a positive spin on it, it could also mean that the Pats saw enough good in Scott, Bequette, Cunningham, Jones, plus the eventual signing of Andre Carter, that they saw no way that Carter would make the team. So his release now is doing him a favor and gives him time to get to another team.

Personally, if that was the reason, I still would have kept him in TC, in case of injuries, but that would have made it tough for him to catch on with another team

Andre Carter back in the mix?

Reiss thinks otherwise:

In what could be a sign of a roster move to come, veteran DE Andre Carter was present at Gillette Stadium on Wednesday.

Whether you think he was a 6th round draft pick or not cutting him now makes no sense unless you are adding someone else. So Carter back to Pats makes sense.

If it means we're going to see something from Cunningham this year and a re-signed Carter it is of some consolation.

I do hope Markell catches on somewhere though.

They gave him a raise to keep him from signing with another team and on the practice squad so there was some potential there so for that alone I'm disappointed. Hopefully it really does mean the other players are just kicking @ss at a level that he couldn't compete at so they did him a solid for his loyalty last year and gave him the extra time to catch on elsewhere.

I wish Mr. Carter the best of luck as he moves on to his next stop.

I agree with this. Usually when the team pulls the plug on a player early it means they've decided to move on or go in another direction, and want to give him a chance to catch on with another team. For whatever reason, they've decided to move on.

The team obviously saw something in Carter last year. But we've seen this kind of pattern before before - the team cut Tyrone McKenzie in 2010 and gave him a higher than normal PS salary to stay on the PS, before cutting him later in the season.

Not shocked whatsoever. In my roster predictions there are some tough cuts, and every time I did the crunching I would easily choose cunningham over him. Im also having a hard time finding a spot for trevor scott as well. Training camp needs to get here so i can see them in action.

With the signing of Scafe today perhaps the roster spot was needed, depending on what happens we could see Carter resigned after another roster move.

Best wishes for Markell, just stay away from the Jets. ;)
