Welker bounty?

For the last couple of years it has seemed that opposing defenses have deliberately tried to injure Welker...usually by late hits but sometimes more blatant. It seemed built into their game plan. Has there been any word of bounties against Welker?

I would sure like to know if Eric Smith or Ryan Clark got a reward for trying injure Welker....The Smith hit was a deliberate head shot and the Clark hit was appalling.

Welker plays in a way that makes him more likely to take those big hits. I doubt he gets targeted anymore than any other elite weapon on an elite team does.

Welker's an elite WR, he's very hard to defend. He's also small for a WR, of course the opposing teams will try to knock him around a bit. Maybe not deliberately try to injure, but definitely rough him up and keep him off his game. And as mentioned he's not the only guy who gets targeted like that.

I thought the Polamalu attempt to break Welker's neck was also disgusting but the league didnt anything about that. What about Stomper headhunting on Todd Heap, or James Harrison's torpedo of Colt McCoy?

Here's an idea: GO AFTER DIRTY PLAYERS! If you give real suspensions to dirty players the dirty play will stop, all this nonsense about bounties is just a bunch of hype so Goddell can pretend like he's actually doing something.

Another hit on Welker that stands out to me is from a few years ago when the Broncos Brian Dawkins speared him in the back following a reception. Like the Polamalu play above, there was no flag on the play.

I don't know if there has ever been a bounty on Welker, but the guy has received some memorable hits as a member of the Patriots. I have no idea if anything comparable happened when he was in Miami or at Texas Tech, but it does add a perspective to his desire for a new contract.

You are correct, that was exactly the play I was referring to, and I think it was much worse that the Clark hit. Clark hit with the shoulder, Polamalu cranked on the helmet which is a really good way of breaking someone's neck.

Welker works the most dangerous part of the field. He knows it and often uses his size to duck under hits. Of course illegal or dangerous hits need to be punished.

Cheap or dirty or late hits should be flagged. Officiating isn't perfect. Players should be fined, and many are, but the system doesn't always work and when it does fans cry flag football (unless it's their guy who got hit as opposed to fined, and sometimes even then...). Cultures aren't changed over night.

He is suspended because Goodell knows he offered cash in support of the program, whether according to Vilma he was lying at the time or not... He was a team captain on defense and he facilitated and encouraged and participated in funding and perpetuating the program and culture, just like that fraud Fujita who did so while serving as an NFLPA player rep and vocal member of the NFLPA Executive committee who wasn't shy about speaking out against the league on player safety but apparently rendered impotent to speak out about it in the Saints locker room because he was ascared of repercussions or the victim of peer pressure...

That hit is one of two reasons Big Bang Clock isn't here any more or in Chicago and in time he won't be in the league anymore unless he alters his approach to life not to mention the game. He's on potentially his last stop in DC already and they'd likely take that decision back after his April DUI.

I hate these bounty speculation threads. It reeks of other fans going back and saying "Did we lose that game back in 2005 to the Pats because of their videotaping? We were killing them in the first half and they came back and beat us in the second half."

I Rememer that hit and that game. I was screaming at the tv that was so obviously malicious/dirty. If I recall right; they didnt even call anything on it. (and the announcers just glossed over it a bit too). That is one of those plays that I think is DAMNING evidence that the RED FLAG should be authorized to call for officials to RELOOK A PLAY (video-replay) FOR A PENALTY.

The red flags are limited enough that you wouldn't see it very often.

In general I think if the refs miss something ok let it go. I wouldn't want it to be used for someothing like a missed OL holding (much as the egregious SB non-call galls me to say that). But for a hit where he GOES FOR THE HEAD, THEN TWISTS THE HEAD and NOBODY CALLS ANYTHING???? sickening.

This isn't about officiating, that's done on the field. Goddell can hand out suspensions regardless of what happens on the field, and since he has plenty of time to review those hits, like the one Stomper dealt, there's no excuse.

Make those fines both painful and appropriate and the culture will change damn fast.

He knows this how? By what evidence? Oh wait, he doesnt need any. At that point the difference between what Goddell thinks and what he knows is immaterial. Long story short, he's concerned about cash and dirty play. Go after dutry plan and the cash is irrelevant.
