Justin Blackmon not off to a good start in the NFL: Aggravated DUI arrest

The Tulsa World reports that Jaguars rookie wide receiver Justin Blackmon was arrested on a complaint of aggravated DUI early Sunday in Stillwater, Oklahoma.

Blackmon was arrested in 2010 in Texas driving back to Oklahoma from Dallas after a MNF game between the Cowboys and Giants.

That's going to cost him. I imagine his contract will prominently feature some language regarding his off-field contract and tie his compensation to good behavior.

Would this mean that he is not officially an NFL employee and not subject to fines and/or penalties? I don't know if the league office differentiates between when the crime was committed and when sentencing occurs as with Dennard.

Thanks. It sounds like that when a player enters the draft, they are subject to NFL rules and regulations. Maybe this isn't the case until they are actually drafted.

I think that's about right, though I certainly don't understand the details. But it sounds like what happened before a player was drafted can't be directly subject to NFL rules, but what happens after can, even prior to the signing of a contract. I think this came up with the Brandon Spikes sex video, which was done while he was a student a UFlorida prior to the draft and therefore not subject to any personal conduct policy. Obviously, prior conduct can affect a player's draft status, but that's about it.

FWIW, they can't expressly do that; all they can really do is alter the amount that is guaranteed. Per PFT, the Jags could tell Blackmon, "Here's the deal: we'll guarantee the entire deal, but if you get arrested between now and the end of next season, your guarantees for years 3 and 4 go up in smoke."

Yeah.

From what I understand about DUI's, it's extremely rare that someone gets caught that one in a thousand times they get behind the wheel after they had an extra sherry at Aunt Millie's or an extra beer after work. Most DUI arrests are the tip of the iceberg.

The fact that this fellow was nailed twice in two years suggests that he has plenty of enablers among his family and friends who are enjoying the fruits of his success.

Sounds like a tragedy in the making to me, unless he gets some people around him who really care about him.

The fact that he was able to drive with that blood alcohol level suggests that he's not exactly "naive" to the stuff. I've seen individuals out cold with that kind of level, and others wide awake with levels twice as high.

The Jags have been down this road before, especially with WRs:

Makes you wonder about the wisdom of trading up for a prospect with a prior DUI on his record when they could have traded back and gotten a quality WR without that issue.
