Just like the Dolphins have an under-the-radar coaching candidate, so do the Oakland Raiders.

The Raiders are eyeing Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, who has the distinction of becoming the youngest offensive coordinator in NFL history. McDaniels was 29 when he accepted the coordinator position Charlie Weis vacated for Notre Dame.

Since last season, the Patriots have fed McDaniels a steady diet of expanding offensive responsibilities.

But McDaniels might have saved his best work for the divisional round, when he showed the Raiders he could help pick up every Chargers blitz.

This made him all the more attractive to Raiders owner Al Davis.

Plus there's this: Whereas the Patriots reduced the responsibilities of former defensive coordinator Eric Mangini last season, they have increased McDaniels'. The problem is the Raiders cannot interview McDaniels until the Patriots' season ends, which might not be until Feb. 4.

I get a kick out of these rumours. Some of us, as Patriots fans, spent the whole year screaming that McDaniels was too young to be an offensive coordinator. How the hell is he already in talks to be a head coach??

You just never know what Al Davis may do lol.

He's can't be in talks until the season's over for the Pats (whether it be next Monday or after the Super Bowl). That what kept Charlie Weis and Romeo Crennel here for an extra year. This rule was implemented after Parcells bolted for the NYJ's after the '96 SB.

All this McD stuff is speculation at this point.

Hehe,
would this cause NEM to haunt raiderz boards, informing them of they will now run no more slants?

just kidding NEM!!!!

They're not new rumors. The same "expert" keeps saying the same thing. Nobody else has reported on this except for maybe PFT. The Raiders are set to hire James Lofton according to most accounts.

Typical example of other teams overvaluing anything that has to do with the Patriots.

Plus, if Art Shell can't control Moss and Porter, how does a 29 year old guy who they have never heard of have any prayer of controlling them?

Mangina's success has likely locked that way of thinking in for a while :(

True. I also was referring to players though. Remember the contract Damien Woody got? Givens got a huge deal too. Both were great here, but are much more valuable to the Pats than they would be elsewhere.

This is false. Michael Smith was reporting this on ESPN on Monday Morning.

What am I missing? Who ever said they were new? Al Davis is a predictable as a pimple on a cows butt. Nobody can predict who is set to hire. He just had Denny Green in and he did hire Art Shell last year.

He said they may take a look. That doesn't mean he's going to become the next HC. Schefter insists on keeping this non-story alive even after the published report out of SD that Lofton is Oakland's man.

I think most of that credit goes to Dante Scharneccia, but I bet Al Davis is too cenile to even think of that.

I don't think that is a viable comparison. You can't say that McD is a product of a system. The OC is on a totally different level of Xs & Os. He has to have the knowledge to perform his job. I am not saying he would be a successful HC, but it isnt the same as players.

I didn't mean to compare it to players, but my point is there are OCs who, if you watched them all year, were much better than McDaniels (which is expected since it is his first year). But it seems like the thought process is "Oh, he works for the Patriots, he must be a head coach canidate." Like Mangini last year...He really wasn't all that good as our coordinator. His play calling on third down was atrocious for most of the year. If he were working somewhere else, he never would have gotten the jets job, but since he was here, he was their first choice.

I missed something again in this thread. Who said McD is going to become the next HC? The rumors are that they are eyeing. You keep arguing againt points that nobody has made. Why would a published report out of SD seal the deal for Oakland? If Lofton is the lock why hasn't he been hired yet?

I'm not trying to be short-sighted or unfair, but I think Josh McDaniels would get eaten alive in Oakland.

Well he isnt incharge of offensive play calling but I'll tell you what, Dante is one hell of an offensive line coach. Great coach.

One word, that I often say and said all year to NEM.

B-A-L-O-N-E-Y !!

The talk isn't surprising at all given his performance. Consider:

No receivers. O line with two sophs and a rookie starting. A rookie RB. An old timer at RB in the tail end of a HOF career. And a great QB.

He "coached up" this conglomeration into the top ten of the League on Offense. Assistant COY candidate, IMHO. I agree he is three or four years too young. But BB has found another coaching prodigy. Saban, Ferentz, Hill, RAC, Mangini, and the youngsters Rob Ryan, and Josh McDaniels.

And even recognizing the enduring coaching abilities of overlooked oldsters, Dante Scarneccia and Dean Pees and guys like Brian Dabol.

Your points are very valid, and very true.

Too many people just eye the W's and L's and think that is all that is necessary. They dont look deep enough into why those L's were L's or if some of the W's could have, and should have been much easier attained , and not through good defensive plays that saved the day, or were taken late into the 4th quarter because the offensive play calling wasnt good enough tobuild a bigger lead.

Those are the defining stats....the ones that arent written.

End result: Great. Winning is better than losing.

How you got there though means more....and if it oculd have been even better, or a lot easier, that is the thing that counts the most, because the next 16 games the defense may fall flat on their asses, and the offense wont be able to pick up the slack in the manner that they did it this season.

Great season, I am happy as a pig in sh!t...but dont give Josh way too much credit that he really doesnt deserve.

Give him some, yes..... but if not for his weak play calling, this team should have been 14-2, at the worst.
