Brian Waters decision?

Reiss has been quite apprehensive in terms of the return of Brian Waters for a while now.

He certainly did not say anything definite, but he has planted the seeds of doubt several times now.

Very conflicting to what Greg Bedard reported, although that story was a while back IIRC--unless he has said something about it recently.

As I said in other threads, I will be happy if/when Waters announces his return or we get credible news. Until then, it seems as though it is quite the possibility that he may not return.

Good news indeed.

It's not "news", actually.

As I said a couple months ago:

1 ~ Waters always takes this part'f the season off, while he allegedly "contemplates." ;)

2 ~ He might also be trying to winkle ~ or is it wheedle?? ~ Mad Bill out'f a few more clams. :D

Thanks Deus. I just saw it myself, and came back to post it in this thread.

Good news indeed.

And given that he was able to stroll in straight off the street to a starting job last year, I think it's fair to say that Brian Waters don't need no stinkin' OTAs.

You beat me to that one.

I'm optimistic that Waters will be back, and I certainly want him back. Badly. But at the same time, the Pats have done a remarkable job with their OL depth. Marcus Cannon played RT today in OTAs with Sebastian Vollmer out, and Robert Gallery played LG. With Matt Light recently retired, if Logan Mankins isn't ready to start the season, Vollmer's back acts up and Waters decides to call it quits, the Pats could still field a starting OL of Nate Solder-Robert Galler-Dan Koppen-Dan Connolly-Marcus Cannon. That's pretty damn impressive. I can't think of another team that has that kind of OL depth. And based on past experience, we may well end up needing it.

The one scary thing to me is that if Vollmer's not healthy, I don't really see a backup LT on the roster.

Vollmer's absence would hurt a lot, but I think Scar could find some workable combo. The Pats briefly tried Logan Mankins at LT last year after Matt Light hurt his leg in warmups for the second Miami game. Despite Robert Gallery's prior struggles at LT for Oakland, I have to wonder whether Scar wouldn't be able to use him more effectively. And with Gronk and Fells I'm sure the Pats would use a blocking TE to help out anyone exposed on the blind side, just as they did with Vollmer in 2009.

I'm guessing that the OT depth will be tested at some point during the season. Remember the 2009 New Orleans game when we could barely patch together a starting line? Not pretty. But I can't think of another team that could potentially lose 4 Pro Bowl/All Pro linemen to injury or retirement (Light, Mankins, Waters and Vollmer) and still field a solid unit.

I also have a sneaking suspicion that at least one of Matt Kopa, Kyle Hix, Markus Zusevics and Jermiah Warren will develop into something more than just a JAG lineman. Maybe not in 2012. But just maybe. And I have great hopes for Nick McDonald, and hear rumors that the Pats see him as potentially a long term starter at center.

how is it nobody signed waters before the pats got to him?

Believe it or not players can choose where they want to sign besides he wasn't a FA this year

Some veterans wait as long as possible to forgoe the rigors of training (and i think it's part to maintain themselves for a long season and the fact that they know enough to get by with less time). Granted it seems he'd be able to leanr more being only his second season with the team, but who honestly expected him to be as great as he was last season.

All these guys are competitors and want a chance at winning a ring. Where's he going to get a better chance than here? He'll be there, but he's just taking as much time to himself as he can (BB probably understands this and is doing his due dilligence and being prepared -- just in case).

diva83 contract shenanigans .

What shenanigans. He signed his tender before OTAs started. Ha always said he wants to be here. I think that things will work themselves out with Welker. The guy has been the opposite of diva since he got here. You ask a legitimate question about Waters and take a cheap shot at Wes. A cheap shot that is undeserved.

Waters is under contract for one more year. He was a play away from having a SB ring. I think he skips OTAs and is there for the start of preseason.

Yes..I can see Waters getting a pass on OTA's from BB.....no problemo
:rocker:
