5/24 OTA Observations

Good stuff. I loved this part:

The secondary seems to have a bunch of moving parts with different players playing in different groupings, though there appeared to be a solid core (which we can’t report).

Bedard's impression of Ras-I Dowling was a bit different from Mike Reiss':

Second-year CB Ras-I Dowling, who was limited to two games in 2011, was a full participant after undergoing hip surgery. I watched him closely as he lined up across from WR Brandon Lloyd, and one thing you immediately notice is his size. This amateur scout also felt he was moving well, running stride for stride with the speedy Lloyd at one point.

Obviously WAY early, but the only news in town.

Offense:
Some concerns with Mallett, but who cares.
Really, Ochocinco? Disappointing to hear that he is still lining up wrong and jumping offsides. There's plenty of depth, so not terrible for the Pats.
With Mankins and Waters out, I guess it's interesting that Gallery is at tackle. Seemed like he would be a better candidate at guard giving his current strengths and weaknesses.

Defense:
Disturbing to hear that Dowling looked stiff and slow. But read Reiss and you get the opposite view right off the top:

We are not going to get any understanding of where people line up from OTA's, but sifting through these tea leaves will be important.
Nice to hear that Barrett looks more like a safety. He sure has the size and speed and athleticism to compete at SS. He can also play ST. Would be nice to get a contribution from him.

Ocho Stinko still doesn't know where to line up. What a joke.

•WR Brandon Lloyd looks like he’s been living in his offense for a while – which he has in Denver and St. Louis – and a natural. He catches everything with ease

I'm not surprised by Bedard saying that Dowling looked a bit stiff. He is recovering from a hip injury and is probably not quite all the way back to the same level of fluidity that he was early last year. Also, if you mesh the comments from Riess and Bedard together: Dowling covering Lloyd (Riess) and Dowling getting burnt(Bedard) it makes some sense after the OTA tire pumping that Lloyd has been receiving today.

Good to hear that Lloyd is looking like a seasoned veteran in our system. Definitely another awesome weapon to add to the arsenal. The only question is who will play the role of WR #3? Will Gaffney win the spot over Branch?

Lloyd, Welker, Gaffney, Gronk, Hernandez - who do you stop?!

Good to hear that Butterfingers was able to redeem himself in OTAs with a tough catch that cost this organization a Superbowl along with severely dampening Brady's legacy. Good work Welker, you have nine and half million reasons to play but catching a pass in the biggest game wasn't one of 'em.

It will be a nice problem to have. :D

How long will this troll last?

Want to tell us what user he shares an IP with, Ian? :)

Pretty sad that Lloyd can just waltz right in and be on the right page and Ocho STILL can't figure out what he's supposed to be doing. I just don't get why he can't get it.

I hope Lloyd can break up the Brady Welker bromance and send Welker packing in 2013. Some people love the team, some love individual players. I love the team, and would not shed a tear if Welker was traded or released. He has only brought the Patriots gaudy stats, no rings.

WR Chad Ochocinco seemed to pickup where he left off. Deion Branch had to tell him where to line up at one point, and then Ochocinco went offsides and had to run a lap.

I'm shocked.

So excited to see Lloyd out there this year

Herr Vollmer missing OTAs? Not good if the reason is his back.
