1.) Trade deadline pushed back 2 weeks, from after week 6 to after week 8

2.) Thigh and knee pads made mandatory beginning in 2013 (this one could have NFLPA problems)

3.) One returnee from the IR per season, as explained in the following quote:

...to allow one "marquee" player placed on injured reserve to return to practice after the sixth game and to the lineup after the eighth game. That player must be on the 53-man roster after the final preseason cut.

NFL owners extend trade deadline, pass padding rule

I guess the league doesn't want teams to be able to keep a player they would otherwise cut, so a player injured in pre-season will need to be on the final 53 before he can be IRed and return later.

Still, I like the idea overall, just don't limit it to one player, especially since they already need to be on the final 53.

Teams can't stash extra players this way, so why not allow more than one IRed player to return? They have already taken a spot on the 53, and will getting paid regardless. Where is the harm in bringing more players back once they're healthy?

Agreed....

And I don't see teams abusing that, since the IRd player will miss at least 8 weeks.

What is a marquee player in the context of this rule?

When does the team have to designate the specific player to be resurrected?

I love the IR returnee rule, we could've used a guy like Ras-I Dowling from our IR last year. (I don't know if he was healthy or not) Also like the trade deadline mover as well.

"Marquee" is an interesting term. Subjective. And I can't imagine it makes it into the actual language. Defining as a member of opening day 53 makes enough sense.

Looking at 2011, Dowling has already been mentioned. Possible, given the terrible depth at CB. Not sure a rookie comes to mind immediately, but if that kept Edelman, Molden, or Ihedibgo out of the nickel defense, that probably would have been a gift.

Other interesting candidate would have been Koppen. What if he was able to slide into Center, and allow Connolly to spot Mankins after he tore the ACL?

What good are thigh and knee pads going to do in the grand scheme of things?

I am ill informed to speak on this subject, it's just that I don't hear much about thigh and knee bruises in the NFL.

I presume its more to do with if those knees or elbows hit heads.

I only heard about 2 restrictions:
1) Player must be on the roster after final training camp cuts
2) Can't change the designation once it is made

The 2nd point is significant in that you don't know when your franchise player is going to go down. If you designate a DE or OT at the end of training camp and your QB goes down week #1, you can't change the "resurrection" tag to your QB.

That makes good sense, doesn't explain the thigh pads though.

Sweet..knee and thigh pads..no more concussions!

Good question. I wonder if Koppen, having already played in one game, would've been eligible
to return later last year if this new rule was in effect then; or can this returnee designation be used
at any time throughout the season, as long as it was not already used during that season?

Pretty soon Goodell will have them wearing Maxi Pads.

It's obvious, Jets boy. The knee pads are mandatory so everybody can Tebow for as long as necessary.

Kickoffs will be the next thing to go in the NFL

If that does happen, I'm out. Big plays from kick returns are an integral part of the game and football wouldn't be the same without kickoffs.

What I would like to see excised from the game is the point after touchdowns (what's the probability of missing a PAT), outside of 2-point conversions. Possibly moving the PAT back a few yards would make things rather interesting.

The "can return" option is something you use on a guy who will miss a lot of weeks, but whom you're nonetheless pretty optimistic will eventually make it back.

thigh and knee pads???

what's next...bumper cars for uniforms???...paint guns and targets on the helmet?

The NFL has to do everything in its power to protect players from injury.

This is only the tip of the iceberg.

yup...pretty soon all players will be required to wear lettuce helmets and salad bars will replace beers and MickeyD's...
