If he gets convicted of assaulting a police officer,he could be facing some serious jail time and may be gone for awhile.

I am surprised the Pats signed him up before getting the verdict of Dennard's short term future.

I get the impression that they know whats going to happen in court and he'll be ready to go for the season.

maybe a plea or the like.

the money they'd actually have to pay him in that case is miniscule

The Oakland linebacker (McClain) just got 180 days for assault, he fired a gun inches from a guy's head.

Exactly what just happened in the Kendrick Ellis deal for the NYJ. He plead guilty to a lesser charge, and it shouldn't factor into any missed playing time, unless it's a 2 game suspension or the like from Goodell.

As a Criminal Justice major, I can almost guarantee that Dennard will plea this one out to a lesser charge, and receive probation + (maybe) a short suspended sentence.

There are a TON of cases where someone has been charged with "assault on a police officer" during a bar fight, or when a cop goes to break it up.

Dennard will not be convicted of assualt on a police officer, I can 100% guarantee that.

Not only that, the fact that this is his first offense and he is a young kid will play into his favor dramatically. He will plead to a lesser charge, and his only real worry will be a game suspension from the NFL.

This is no big deal at all. The original charge is only the lowest felony degree charge anyway, so there's nowhere to go but out of the felony range altogether in a plea. Since about 80% of all cases are plead out to a lesser charge anyway to save time, money, and gain the actual guilty verdict, Dennard stands to benefit greatly from striking a plea deal.

Exactly, and even with his 6 month sentence, there's about a 1% chance that he actually serves more than about 4-6 weeks at the absolute most.

They will take into acct any time served already, and also allow him to be paroled shortly into his actual sentence.

McClain will likely not miss any regular season games--except the ones that are imposed by Goodell as punishment.

I have a feeling Dennard knows he really dodged a bullet and caught a bigtime break getting drafted by the Pats.

I hope he uses this to his advantage and goes on to a successful life and career.

I have a feeling he's really gonna be a good DB for years to come.....

The Patriots need some inside / slot corner help and Fonzie should fit right in. The Patriots also need some bravado and attitude in the secondary; Fonzie will definitely help there! He will probably drive slot receivers nuts....we would hate him if he played for the Jets but I think that the Patriots fans will love him.

He and Bequette are probably going to be the stars of Camp; I cannot wait!

Believe me, I'm a lot more worried about his poor showing at the Senior Bowl than this bar fight dust up. Glad he's aboard and hope he doesn't miss any off season time. If he loses a game or two for it, so be it. Just as long as Ellis gets the same.

Definitely too good of a potential upside to pass up in the 7th round.

From what I understand, he played some good press man coverage at times, and was a physical presence right off the line opposite Prince Amukamara while at Nebraska.

Hopefully the legal battle does not amount to much, and he can provide us with some strong play over the next 4 yrs.

Bowl game with coaches that don't know his strengths. Didn't play him a lot man to man.

I don't think thats a huge concern.

And don't most offseason bowls also have a no-press rule?

I would hope that he doesn't as he wasn't in the NFL when it happened!

Not that I condone this, nor do I have any detail on this particular incident, but a typical scenario for assaulting a police officer in a bar room fight is this:

Fight breaks out, lots of commotion, fists flying, a police officer tries to break it up and gets bumped into (or elbowed) during the commotion. Police officer pissed off and claims he was intentionally punched in the face.

Obviously it was a bad decision (especially days before the draft), but for now I'm going to cut the kid a break. I;m sure the front office did some additional homework.

Well, if BB drafted him, he must know more than us about this case. My kool-aid drinking butt is going to believe that Fonzie will be just fine for the start of the season. As someone pointed out, he cant be suspended. The assault happened before he was in the NFL,,,,or could he be? Anyone know of any cases prior to now?

I think the commisioner will consult his magic 8 ball.

Lets just wait and see what it says.

Terrelle Pryor was suspended for a number of games for stuff he did at OSU. . . .

I think Dennard & Ellis are different circumstances tho CT.....

"Critics suggest this is another example of a professional sports league engaging in a little quid pro quo with the allegedly amateur organization that provides it with talent. Goodell's decision to "honor" Pryor's five-game Ohio State suspension by transferring it to the NFL is eerily similar to the NBA/NCAA collusion on NBA age limits."

It looks like Pryor was trying to weasel out of an OSU suspension by going into the supplemental draft.

Dennard and Ellis had no such suspensions prior to their altercations ..at least that I know of.

Denard is worth the pick and the money even if he is available for only half of the 2012 season. It is not unusual for a rookie defensive back to be inactive almost all year, except for special team play or emergency duty late in the year.

We signed a play with 2nd round talent. We paid a lot less and the player may potentially lose some playing time if he were active). I think that we received solid value for what we spent.
