Raiders | Lofton reportedly set to become team's next head coach
Tue, 16 Jan 2007 17:35:55 -0800

Kevin Acee, of the San Diego Union-Tribune, reports San Diego Chargers wide receivers coach James Lofton is reportedly set to become the Oakland Raiders' next head coach. Lofton and the Raiders are working on details of a contract, according to sources. Lofton could be named the team's head coach as early as Wednesday, Jan. 17.

Disappointed Ryan missed out. He should move on now.

The obvious follow-up question is, who do the Raiders hire next year?

Screw Ryan, he tampered with our team and took Ted Washington. That was clear tampering.

wow, congrats Lofton, always liked him, a great and underrated player. The Raiders seem light years away from being relevant though. Poor Brady Quinn or Jamarcus Russell.

I must say I'm kind of shocked at this hiring. Will be interesting to see how he does.

Maybe whomever is drafted by the Raiders pulls an Eli? Or not, because they don't have a father named Archie.

Still no news regarding Marty's status.

Meanwhile, Chargers president Dean Spanos continues his silence and, presumably, his deliberations on whether to fire Marty Schottenheimer.

Schottenheimer met with his assistant coaches Tuesday morning, but his job status remained unknown. Several sources within the organization said they had not heard whether Schottenheimer will be retained.

“It's probably not a good sign,” two sources said of the amount of time Spanos is taking, meaning they thought it was a sign Schottenheimer will be let go.

Cam Cameron's agent has been contacted by Huizenga.

Also Wednesday, Dolphins chief operating officer Bryan Wiedmeier told the media in South Florida the team has been in contact with the agent for Chargers offensive coordinator Cam Cameron since the Chargers' playoff loss Sunday.

More on Lofton...

Receivers coach James Lofton and the Oakland Raiders are working on details of a contract, sources said Tuesday.

Lofton, 50, who also interviewed with the Raiders after last season, could be named the team's coach as soon as Wednesday. However, one source cautioned, “You never know with these things.”

[...]

Lofton was a finalist for the Stanford head coach's job that went to Jim Harbaugh last month. The Hall of Fame receiver also interviewed with the Buffalo Bills last offseason.

Why are you shocked? I heard Davis set up an interview booth outside the unemployment office. Best of luck to Lofton though, always seemed like a good guy.

Any Patriots fan has to be rooting for the Chargers to lose Cameron, no?

Al Davis is defintiely unconventional. I'm sorry for those Raiders fans.

1. They are destined to be bad until Al Davis sells the team.

2. They have to endure a year with Bledsoe at QB

3. They will probably mess up the draft

So Josh is NOT going to the Raiders after all?

Meanwhile Mike Shula was given a interview with the Dolphins. I wonder if this has anything to do with daddy? Wouldn't it be ironic if the Dolphins and Alabama coach switched coaching spots? I don't think Miami would ever hire Shula though.

Doesn't Don have a senior position within the FO of the Dolphins? We'll see how much weight he still pulls around there.

Bledsoe and the Raiders? Did I miss something?

What? Bledsoe on the Raiders?

And what happened to this huge interest in McDaniels? I don't see his name there.

* I live about 25 miles from Oakland and the media out here wonders why anyone would want that job. Can't pick your own coaches, players or what offense your going to run. About all you can do is stand on the sidelines and watch the game. Art Shell was perfect -:)

heard on espn that he left raiders facility without a deal...FWIW
