Re: Huge suspension for Saints players

ouch........

Re: Huge suspension for Saints players

That barely affects the Saints at this point. Hargrove and Fujita arent on the team and they signed Vilma's replacement earlier this offseason. Only Will Smith's 4 games has a real impact.

Losing Vilma will hurt in the leadership department. He was one of the leaders of that team.

Plus who is going to put up the money for the bounties now that Vilma is suspended without pay?

If I remember right, when a player is suspended, his salary still counts against the cap, and the team still has to pay the salary, BUT the league (and not the player) gets the money. I pretty sure the league then donates that money to charity. So you want to be an NFL charity this year, cuz they have a whole lotta cake to dole out!

So does that leave Cleveland taking the cap hit and suspension because of Saints malfeasance? If I were a Browns fan I'd be fuming.

I'm sorry, but I think this is total Goodell BS.

FWIW, NFL fines are actually mandatory charitable contributions by the player/coach/etc. That avoids the double whammy of paying taxes on money not actually being paid.

To be fair, they're not paying because of Saints malfeasance, they're paying because of Fujita's role in it.

Re: Huge suspension for Saints players

Knew they were coming. Actually not as bad as I thought they would be. I would be pissed if I were the Browns fans though.

Vilma is done.

Quite so, but it was a role in a scheme orchestrated by the coaching staff of another team, which they knew nothing about when they signed the player.

Re: Huge suspension for Saints players

And this years Superbowl is hosted by New Orleans...hmm Intersting.

Re: Huge suspension for Saints players

Wow, harsh stuff. Especially sucks for the Packers and Brownies.

Re: Huge suspension for Saints players

Even though the players went along with this, I was really expecting a lesser punishment for them. You play the way the coaches are coaching you to play. If your told to do something, it's in your best interest to do it the best you can, or at least appear to be trying to play the coaches way.

Unless the league can point to a play/plays where it is obvious that you were trying to main another player, then it seems to me they cannot judge the intent you have in your heart.

In all the highlights they show when talking about bountygate, where is the malice. All the hits they show look clean to me. How can you suspend a player for a year, when they were never even penalized in a game? I am shocked:eek: by this!

Incorrect. When a player is fined it goes to the league charities. Suspensions are simply loss of pay and when pay isn't paid it comes off the cap. So teams lose the player but gain cap space.

Re: Huge suspension for Saints players

Four Saints players have been suspended today.
Some players are out for the year without pay.
They are Vilma, Hargrove, Smith and Fujita
More to follow..
Browns linebacker Scott Fujita 3 games
Will Smith was suspended four games.
Anthony Hargrove 8 games
Vilma whole year

Four suspended for Saints’ bounty program, Vilma for all of 2012 | ProFootballTalk

But but but...how can the NFL be so harsh against a team not named the patriots? The pats are the biggest cheaters on the planet and BB is the devil incarnate. This is a total outrage.

You're missing the point. It's not about who you hurt. Of if you actually didn't. It's about pay for play and all of those deals are prohibited by rule and a cap evasion and in this case if you contributed in a large amount and to a bounty perversion of pay to play then you really are culpable. These guys didn't just go along or fail to report or refuse to do something they were being encouraged to do that they knew was illegal, they actively participated in perpetuating the whole mess and selling it to younger impressionable players. There is a world of difference between throwing a C note in a pot that goes to the first guy to sack or intercept the QB or the wedge player throwing the block that keys a kickoff return and a guy who plunks $10K on the table for a QB knockout.

And that guys like Fujita who is a member of the NFLPA executive committee and was a vocal force behind player demands for increased safety via less practice contact and shortened off season workouts was active in this and failed to do anything to stop it is really the height of hypocracy. And that is part of what Goodell is trying to get at so veterans will wise up and rookies won't be indoctrinated into the do as I say in this room and not as I blather for the cameras at contract time mentality that makes this union a joke.

At least this will get people to stop talking about Harbaugh's comments yesterday
