You Should Watch Bruschi Destroy The Spygate Haters

I think the video discussion needs it's own separate thread please. The other Spygate thread is about the issue but not the actual video.

I'm pretty sure the NFL Live from yesterday afternoon is still available online, you should watch it if you want to see Tedy's blood boil. The moderator of the show (his name slips my mind, it wasn't Wingo) did a very good job of putting hard straight questions to both Bruschi and Mangini - yes, they were seated next to each for the Spygate discussion.

Tedy passionately and articulately destroys the haters several times - if you're a true Pats fan you'll be pumping your fist and shouting, Yes!

Tedy sort of lets Harbaugh off the hook, but not completely.

When Mangini starts saying he wishes he had never began the mess, the cameras back off so you can see Tedy as well as Mangini and I'd swear Bruschi is ready to rip Mangini's head off.

The creme de la creme arrives late as the moderator, from out of nowhere, asks Bruschi and Mangini if they are OK with each other! They both stumble over their words at first, but most telling is Bruschi never looking directly at Mangini for more than a split second while he says he doesn't carry a grudge. Both looked like they'd rather have been anywhere else! Bruschi because he wants to drill Mangini but can't, and Mangini because he can't miss Bruschi's body language and that he sounds more and more like a rat as he goes on wishing he could take it all back.

It's electric stuff for Pats fans.

Let's take a step back for a second...

OK. BSPN misconstrued Harbaugh's comments just like they do with everything. All Harbaugh said was spygate ruined people's perception of the Pats and Bountygate ruined the Saints' perception. He did not imply the asterisk thing (similar to all of the steroid noise in baseball) like everyone wants to think. As annoying as Harbaugh and a lot of the Ratbirds can be with their mouthing off, this wasn't one of those times.

I maintain that if the Pats were terrible when the Spygate stuff came out, no one would have cared. It DID NOT help that we proceeded to smash everyone's favorite team on the way to a super bowl appearance. We hurt a lot of feelings that season, and ESPN kept pounding the drum and rallying everyone against the team that was killing everyone.

A noble cause and good luck with that. (This board has been even more ornery than usual lately. And not always laser-focused on a particular thread's subject.)

I appreciate the link; I hadn't watched it.

On thing that I have to say struck me was when Bruschi said Spygate happened and the Patriots paid the price. So there is a sense that the players know whatever happened was wrong and the Pats got caught. I guess as a fan, that chips away one very low and small level of deniability that what they did was wrong. I put that at the no-Santa-CLaus-or-Easter-Bunny level.

Of course, what was done wrong still needs to be shown in proper context and proportion. There needs to be more candor about how prevalent these practices were league wide — unlike bountygate, "everyone else was doing it" IS relevant because the issue is one of competitive advantage. Maybe it's just the homer in me, but I have to believe the Patriots players and coaches know of stuff that other teams have done, and they've been nobly silent about it.

Anyway, on topic, I feel like Mangini was ripe for some hard questioning there and the announcer missed an opportunity to put this all into context, and explain how it went from gamesmanship to over-the-top persecution.

Also: I think at the end Bruschi is actually asked if he and Harbaugh are OK, not Mangini. I could be wrong.

Maybe they cut it from the video replay - I saw the whole thing on TV - and the moderator definitely put Bruschi and Mangini on the spot as to whether they are OK with each other. It was a weird moment; it's easy to forget that Bruschi and Mangini worked closely together for years before Mangini left for the NYJ.

Some people are taking this the wrong way. Yeah he and the Ravens are a bunch of cry babies..but a lot of coaches in the NFL probably agree with him but don't say anything. You can say whatever you want...but it doesn't change the fact that they have had great success since the whole incident..which squashes every single person that says they haven't won **** since

What needs to be specified publicly is exactly what information was collected pertaining to other teams' signals and how/when it was applied. This never came to light, leading to all kinds of wild speculation over "cheating" to gain a competitive advantage. If these basic facts were brought into the open, EVERYONE would understand how minor the rule infraction truly was. From what I recall, BB alluded to the fact that the tapes were filed away for breakdown and reference at a later date.

As noted numerous times, the practice of monitoring other teams' sideline signals was common throughout the league, via taping them from various locations and taking notes by watching through binoculars. What the Pats did was violate a rule banning taping from a certain location, NOT a ban on stealing signals. The general (ignorant) misconception out there is the Pats cheated by stealing signals, which NEVER was the issue.

when the guy who started spygate (mangini) accepts and believes the fact that it did not give a superior advantage to the patriots, but simply wanted to inconvinience them at the jets home stadium (which is something we here ALL knew pretty much) then you gotta believe him no?

whatever, whoever is still citing spygate and is hung up on spygate is an idiot so what does it really matter?
