Who are some people we should be keeping an eye on Patriots-wise through the college season with an eye to the draft.

Thinking about possible positions (Not in Order):

1 O/Line
2. WR
3. S
4. TE
5. RB
6. DT

1. I think one target which should strong on the radar is Barrett Jones. Ticks a lot off BB's boxes (Intelligent, big program, leader, versatile).

2. Philip Lutzenkirchen, TE, Auburn - Has a bit of the Gronkowski about him.

3. Eric Reid, S, LSU - Love him. Only bettered by Barron as far as I'm concerned.

4. The Honey Badger - Not sure the personality's a fit, but I'd love to see what BB could do with Tyrann Mathieu.

OK. There's some early runners that I know of. Anyone else?

I think WR will be one of the biggest needs for 2013 with the amount of ageing players on the roster. My dream scenario is Marquess Wilson from Washington State or Robert Woods from USC, but both will likely be gone. I also think it will be a strong S class with TJ McDonald and Kenny Vaccaro being my favorites. It could also be a good opportunity to pick up Big Vince's replacement at NT. Star Lotulelei from Utah, Jesse Williams Alabama, Kwame Geathers Georgia and Sylvester Williams UNC could all be good options. And on the O-Line I love Barret Jones from Alabama at either C or OG. Whatever direction we go it will be a different draft without any extra picks.

And if some miracle happened and the Pats go the #1 pick (say Kevin Kolb gets hurt in training camp and the Cards get desperate and trade their 1st for Ryan Mallett) then I would be ecstatic if we somehow drafted Matt Barkley. He is a future franchise QB and I rate him higher than Andrew Luck this year. I think he would make a perfect replacement for Brady in 2015 or 2016.

If we somehow managed to get a pick like that then we'd be in perfect position to reel in a Rams' type haul;)

The receiver spot could definitely use a boom prospect.

I also will be paying attention to 6'3" David Amerson of NCSt. He had unheard of production last year at cornerback....13 INTs!!!!

Another guy I will keep an eye on is Barkevious Mingo. I don't really care who he is, but with a name like that I've got to pay attention;)

It's looking, this far out, to be a very good draft at least in the first round. Wouldn't mind betting it'll be the draft that BB starts picking up extra picks again by reverting to his norm - he obviously doesn't see big needs on the team considering the events at the weekend.

It's interesting that he took the pass rushers this year as next year's first round is looking exceptional for pass rushers. Without a need there, it might push non pass rushers down to us.

i like the whole bama defensive line. jesse williams is able to play all over the line. at end penetrating the pocket and he is big enough to be the successor of vince. quinton dial and damion sqaure are good ends and they can have a simillar impcat like deaderick.

When I look to 2013 I wonder who will be the WRs. I believe Lloyd is the only decent WR signed past this year. They can't expect to play a WR from the draft right away, especially given their draft history.

I love the Honey Badger! Great nickname! I know he is a great punt returner but does he project to be an elite defensive back?

If all he was was a defensive back, then no. He's probably a 3-4th round slot corner. But he's a defensive weapon. Outstanding against the run, at getting to the QB, at forcing turnovers and then of course there's special teams. I doubt he goes in the higher reaches of the first round but I think he adds a lot to a defense.

Safety seems like a strong point in next years draft. The already mentioned.

Eric Reid - LSU
Robert Lester - Alabama
Tyrann Mathieu LSU - AKA Honey Badger. Plays cb. Prob projects to FS.

Some others
Ray Ray Armstrong - Miami
Kenny Vaccarro - Texas -
TJ McDonald - USC -
Tony Jefferson - Oklahoma - Recruited as a cb. 5'10" 200lb. Frosh of the year in 2010. OU moved him to WOLB. Because nobody runs the damn ball in that league any more. I'm guessing he projects to Safety. Will be a junior this year.
Baccari Rambo - Georgia. Suspended first 4 games. There is talk he could enter supplemental draft. How can you not like a defender with a name like that.

Not sure how the dt/de(two gappers) are rated. Top one seems to be Star Lotulelei - Utah. We won't get a sniff of him. Georgia has a couple of huge guys Jonathan Jenkins 6'4" 340 and Kwame Gaethers 6'6" 344lb. Kawann Short 6'3"305 lb. Saw him a few times. Looked good against PSU and Ohio St in the games I saw. Baker Steinkuhler 6'6" 290 lb Nebraska. Yes, Dean's kid. He of the fumble rooski fame against Miami in 84 Orange Bowl. I know makes you feel old.

Terrific Thread!! :rocker:

Definitely "Sticky" worthy, if they do that, here.

And the timing is perfect. :D

Is anyone interested if I keep a running thread going with prospect videos, links to scouting reports and my own offered thoughts on 2013 prospects. I plan to start early this year - I want to be all over the draft by next year. Obviously other's will be able to contribute too.

I know. after five months immersed in the draft, there's a big hole right now

If Picard say's so, who am I to argue. I'll start one up later this evening.

This year proved a big adjustment to me in terms of philosophy; I think I was still too stuck in the traditional 34 defensive prototypes. Next year I should have a better handle on the team/scheme fits.

Wish I could list myself as a person of interest. I'm only twenty-four, I'd love to play football, and I am an elite-level athlete. If BB can draft a rugby player, then why not a parkour instructor?

2013 - the year of the safety. After a couple of lean years, we could see an explosion of safeties in 2013.

Lester of Alabama (my tp choice)
Rambo of Georgia (Great name)
Vacarro of Texas
Boyett of Oregon
McDonald of USC
Armstrong of Miami

Another couple of guys I like:

TE Eifert of Notre Dame
OLB Taylor of SC
OLB Montgomery of LSU
RB Lattimore of SC (if healthy)
RB Ware of LSU
CB Banks of Miss State
OTs Faulk and Hurst of LSU

At only 5'9" I wonder how he would hold up making tackles at the LOS. Seems like a tweener to me on defense.

I salute you, Brother Reamer: You're well ahead of the curve.

Most of the posts I see are still bogged down in "34" thinking.

I'm sure we'll still play that, from time to time.

But behind the "245" ~ my favorite!! ~ the "425", and various other permutations ~ accent on the "mutations!!" :D ~ the "34" may come in 4th or 5th in terms of Market Share!!

I am going to go ahead and assume Chandler Jones,Bequette and Hightower are super studs and kind of lay off the LB and DE's for a while.

Things to keep in mind. BB was in a perfect position this year to move up and get players. Due to the rookie salary cap I don't think he will ever be able to acquire/stockpile picks like that again as they were certainly devalued this year after the top 10 went off the board. Picking 32 will be hard but I'm sure we will find someone to fill our needs:)

Safety/Cb. I want a top notch guy that can cover just about the entire field. A play maker a run stopper, someone they don't have to move all the way up to 7 for. If it is a Cb conversion project so be it. We'll see how Gregory and Wilson pan out. Possibly Dennard but I see him more as a slot cb with that mean jam of his.

Offensive Line. Replenish the core, always look for LTs who are versatile. Enough said there. Can never have enough.

DT. Unfortunately this is looking like a lame class of Lackeys so far. There are a couple of potential guys out there but hopefully some one will put their game together as the season goes on.

Kr/Wr/Te. Want a smallish, lightning quick, evasive Kr that doubles as a Wr. There were a few that fit the bill but were left out to dry. As far as Wr's, I think we will need one unless BB goes the free agent route again. I'd like to see a play at making both Gronk and Hernandez extended but I think their agents will be too smart for that. We should probably try drafting another just in case.
