Interesting note from Reiss late last night:

(Chandler) Jones received the phone call from Patriots director of football/head coach administration Berj Najarian, who told Jones "It's going just the way I told you it was going to go," to which Jones responded "Yeah, I know. You did. You told me."

And there's a nice video of the moment the call came.

So I guess that none of what happens was an accident or an afterthought????

I love watching those videos. And it certainly looks like Jones was their man all along.

First impression: nice kid with a good family support system.

I imagine when you've been doing it as long as they have, the first round is pretty predictable to these guys, or at the very least, more predictable then it is for the mediots and us. Everyone has "that guy" they want to shoot for and once it starts playing out, it all falls into line. The coaches all pretty much know, or suspects, the needs of just about every other team.

I bet that BB (and most every other coach) already had about 10 potential deals in place according to how the board fell. As it started to unfold the way it did, he just rang up that "deal" and made it happen.

OK, I'll play.

Another version:

(Chandler) Jones received the phone call from Patriots director of football/head coach administration Berj Najarian, who told Jones "It's going just the way I told you it was going to go," to which Jones responded "Yeah, right, coach. You predicted Irvin would go at pick 15?" "Hello? Hello?" "Damn, I think we've been disconnected."

OK, I'll play.

Another version:

Yeah, that's the thing: The way I saw it playing out it seemed like a lot of things had to happen for Jones to be available at 21. I wonder at which point Najarian told Jones how it was going to play out. Before the draft started? After the Irvin pick?

great video.we had a good draft

Irvin was the only surprise in the first 20 picks. Last year was different when QB's were getting over drafted left and right.

The only difference between last year and this year is that the over-drafting was predicted this year. . . .

LOLphins. :bricks:

Here are the actual events and BB's comments after each pick before Jones was drafted:

Picks 1-2: It is what it is.

Pick 3: Browns...hmph, i don't know about that.

Pick 4-7: It is what it is.

Pick 8: Dolphins will be a tough team and they made improvements for next year.

Pick 9: It is what it is.

Pick 10: See pick 8, replace Dolphins with Bills.

Pick 11: Chiefs, Scott is a great evaluator of talent and close friend.

Pick 12-15: It is what it is.

Calls up Jones: hey Jonesey, BB here, if the Jets don't draft you, because they could be morons, we're going to trade up to get you because we don't see you lasting past the Steelers, hang tight buddy.

Pick 16: ....morons

Pick 17: Ok, so the morons in 16 didn't pick our guy, but those those pesky Steelers(!) are still in the way at 24...time to start calling around to trade up.

Calling for Pick 23: so you want both of our 1st for the 23rd...let me think
about it <click>

Calling for Pick 22: So you want both of our 1st for the 22nd...no wonder the team moved <click>.

Calling for Pick 21: Hmm, seems reasonable, deal <Click> sucka.

Pick 18 - 20: Man those Jets are morons.
