Tavon Wilson - Lightning Rod o'Controversy (Poll)

When he was taken in the second round I was shocked but the more I think about it the more I am certain that BB knew he faced competition from somewhere and made sure to get his guy.

If its your turn to pick and the guy is top of your board then you go get him. He was rising as evidenced by the amount of interst shown by teams in the last couple of weeks. We really have no clue as regards just how highly he was rated by the experts, and I'm not talking about Kiper et al I'm talking about the pros.

BB did this a couple of years ago and Vollmer worked out. In his presser last night he actually said he doesn't know who picks the players for the all-star games or the combine. He then posed the question as to how Brandon Brooks wasn't invited to the Combine and then asked how Vollmer was left out.

He compared the pick to Vollmer in that he was invited to any of these things either. And if a player doesn't make it to any of these all-star games or the combine then he is never going to be on Mel Kiper's radar. Kiper called him a reach but I'm telling you right here and now that he hadn't a clue about the guy when his name was called last night.

I'm gonna say that he will be a first rounder in the SI draft redux in two to three years.

I don't have hate for anyone. Not sure where you got that from. And as for your first paragraph I wasn't saying that either. I was just saying they've been wrong before so questioning a draft pick is completely acceptable.

You didn't say that in response to 'no one should question a pick' you said that in response to 'why would you think you looking at youtube videos gives a better assessment of the player than the exhaustive research of an NFL team',

Your posts so far have been negative, combatiive and decidely anti Patriots. I don't know how anyone would get anything else from your posting record so far.

No, I did not say "they've been wrong before" in response to "why would you think blah blah blah..."

And I am not negative, combative, or anti patriots. Maybe you're misunderstanding me through the internet medium.

Yes you did. In fact you quoted the post and those were the exact words you used.

Perhaps I am, but perhaps you should take note that your style of posting is presenting you this way. Its pretty obvious from the responses you are getting, not just from me, but from a slew of other posters.

I may have quoted you but my response wasn't directed where you think it was. And I will take note but it doesn't mean I care. The people that follow me around and call me a troll or attempt to insult my intelligence are quite entertaining in a pathetic sort of way.

OK so you quoted a post and made a one sentence comment in response to it, but it wasn't a response to what the post stated?
Why were you quoting the post then, and what was that comment in response to?

Reach or not he's now a Patriots player and deserves the full support of the fan base.

Good luck with that.
There will be a large contingent of fans rooting for him to fail and exhalting in it if he does.

you looked at a few film clips and don't 'see the talent' and conclude that your You Tube viewing outweighs the exhaustive research by BB and the scouting, personell and coaching staffs, and on top of that your conclusion is better than theirs.

They've been wrong before. Also, YouTube is just a website that plays videos. It doesn't diminish or improve the credibility of any videos that are on there.

I think the funny part is that a lot of people questioning the pick seem to be thinking that BB just decided to take him in the 2nd round for absolutely no reason. BB ALWAYS has a reason for what he does. We may not agree with it, and it may turn out to be wrong, but I don't think any decision regarding his football teams has ever been made while thinking, "Eh, whatever..."

In this case, my best guess (which is all anyone has at the moment) is that he had reason to believe someone was targeting Wilson at the end of the 2nd and he was the only safety left on their board rated high enough to take. Whether their information on other team's boards was accurate or not we'll never know, but that seems like the most plausible explanation.

I find it very interesting that in a draft that was considered very weak for secondary players and basically weak overall that after what if it pans out could be one of the best 1st rounds ever for the Pats D such a hew and cry has gone up because of this one 2nd round pick. Let me put it this way no matter what safety or DB they picked at the spot was guaranteed to be a great player because of the weakness at the position in general. Therefore why not pick someone that might contribute on S/T's as a star with the potential to get playing time at S? And for those who say trade down then, maybe they tried and could not get it done, fact is you will never know. Also you don't know if they got word another team might pick him.

I am just astounded at all the wailing and nashing of teeth that is going on over this one pick.....its crazy IMHO. How about we let the kid hit the field and see what he brings before we start the kid is a bust and BB doesn't know what he is doing.

It baffles belief that people would want players on their team to fail. Sure, I didn't exactly embrace the thought of Sergio Brown or Gary Guyton commanding reps, but I sure as hell wanted them to be the best players they could be whilst on the field. It's a foreign concept to me, rooting against your own. I almost feel obliged to stick Wilson on the binkie list.

Tavon Wilson... What can you say. Wow didn't see that one coming.

The facts: Picked mid 2nd round. A reach in selection slot? Yes. A reach in talent? ...uknown.

BB, a master conducter in the draft concerto, where does BB's analysis diverge with the fan-boys? Rumors that SD and other teams liked the kid, some strong pro-day #'s, talk of late rising stock, etc, could all have contributed to a seemingly unneedingly early pick slot, and by definition a waste of draft resources.

Anyway, history shows when BB drafts a player like this early, he's looking for a four down player. So what's he's envisioning? Safety, for sure. How so? Big NIckle hybrid, most likely. Fill in DB as needed, yes. So that's mostly second downs, some thrird, some first. Special teams? Resounding yes. KOs, KRs, PR's as Gunner, maybe some Jammer.

This of course assumes he has the skills to stick.

Usually, on this type of 'reach picks', I go check out the Youtube film and I come back saying wow this kid is good. BB is right! Well not this time. Check it out:

BB gets a little testy when asked about the pick.

This guys progress will be interesing to watch. Without question he'll be a focus point here at Patsfans going forward.

With that all said, get your opinion in now, state your postion, you're gonna be held to it! What to you project for Mr Wilson?

Somebody posted two youtubes of him. the Michigan one they were running up the middle all game, not much to see.

check the ASU game, Wilson is all over the place.

BTW, after watching the film, and I think he's a fringe player at best this year, maybe up and down from the PS. I don't see the skills on film. Hope I'm wrong, but maybe BB envisions him in a more natual postion(s) where he might excel..

:singing: Hahahahhahahaha :singing:

That's was awesome. Thanks for the laugh.

Time will tell. I like/love his leadership and he seems to be a pretty smart kid who’s faced a lot of adversity in his young life. Not sure how far his talent will bring him, but he looks like a good kid that will be easy for me to root for.

It'll be even better rooting for him here at PatsFans, knowing how many so-called fans are hating on him from jump street. Go Tavon Go.

Totally agree with you. Its a sad state of affairs, but a true one.

I agree. We havent seen him play in a Patriots uniform yet and already being ridiculed. There is a reason BB took him in round 2. Maybe hes that dark horse that no one knows about. We will see. He is a Patriot so I will support him!!
