I was aghast on reading the following on the Globe's website:

---------
A little work needed on the offensive side, by DAN SHAUGHNESSY, Boston Globe website. (http://www.boston.com/sports/footba...6/a_little_work_needed_on_the_offensive_side/)

"It's pretty obvious the Patriots will beat the Colts Sunday and advance to the Super Bowl. Only a moron would pick against New England in a big game (anybody got a mirror?). The Patriots always win the big game.

Beating Peyton Manning and the Colts should be the easy part. It's the postgame celebration I'm worried about...."

--------------

Normally I ignore what this columnist writes because in my opinion, he is knowledgable about baseball/Red Sox and knows little about the Pats. That being the case, I just couldn't help but get shocked when I saw the opening line.

If he wants to come down on the Pats for the excessive celebration, he should be free to do it. But why make such arrogant predictions?? Isn't he disrespecting the opponents - which is exactly what the Pats thought the Chargers were doing to us before the game??

I am now starting to wonder if he is among those determined to pull the Pats down and give the Colts enough bulletin material. I am fuming...

Edit: I understand that the article is quite even-handed after the first couple of paras and requests the Pats to tone it down. But those opening lines...

I felt the same way when I read that line.. I couldn't imagine what he was trying to accomplish writing that.

I couldn't decide if he was indicating that we are now no better than the Chargers or if he really meant it.

Either way, that's not something you should put in print.

Shaughnessy is not the Patriots and does not speak for them (thank God). This is his opinion only, hardly bulletin-board material.

I took it as the idiot (shank) was talking about how he picked the chargers last week using stats not intangibles and was calling himself a fool thus the mirror question so he could look at himself for past selections and will over compensate for his lack of faith by never picking against him

shank is a tool

Shaughnessy is always...ALWAYS sarcastic when it comes to the Pats (see his "Yahoo" column before the Jets playoff game  ). That guy is a tool, end of story.

I don't know what his problem is...actually, I do know. He probably doesn't believe half of what he writes. He just writes these little, bitter columns to create controversy. He wants to write himself into Cooperstown like his buddy Gammons. We are seeing the best football by (arguably) the best QB/Head Coach combo ever, yet this guy isn't on board?

Shaughnessy is a small man preaching to an empty room.

I disagree. I think it was meant to be bulletin board material. At the very least it was a completely one sided slam on the Patriots. How can anybody in the local media have missed all the things the Chargers did to deserve a moment of silliness from a Pats player or two?

I believe sincerely that Dan, who has always made his baseball bias known, wants us to screw up next week. I believe that strongly.

Just like I can't wait for the baseball season to die off, he can't wait for the football season to die off. Difference is that I don't write articles to humiliate the Red Sox.

He's a baseball writer.

He's irrelevant when it comes to the Patriots as much as if he were writing about the North Korean nuclear situation. You could get better football info from the Inside Track Gals at the Herald.

Just remember, the Globe is laying off 125 in the next month. Folks like Reiss who are ensconced with the internet will be fine. Shaughnessy is another case. Why do you think Masarotti is also embarrassing himself by trying to cover the Pats also? He's going down with the sinking print newspaper business also, while the more internet savvy bloggers (Tomase-Breer) will survive.

Shaughnessy's problem is worse. Masarotti can go to TV and radio and do national stuff because he is good live. Shaughnessy comes off like a slower Napolean Dynamite. The print medium is the only way he can do it.

It's sarcasm people. Please.

The Colts will be easy, I'm worried about the celebration.

You can't see the obvious sarcasm there? Anyone who actually believed that would be locked up.

Lol!

"You know, like nunchuck skills, bowhunting skills, computer hacking skills... Girls only want boyfriends who have great skills."

Hmmmm, I liked the article. It was sarcasm....about how focused everyone seems to be on the postgame stuff and not the fact that there is an actual game to be played.

Because the Pats don't always win the big game, sadly. Last year comes to mind.

The stuff he was saying about the Chargers was exactly the same stuff all of us were posting here.

I thought it was a good column.

This guy is aweful. I don't see the value in anything he writes, whether it be Pats or Red Sox. I read his piece saying the Pats didn't have a chance against SD and felt like I'd just wasted a few minutes of time needlessly. I think there are fans on this site and on Red Sox message boards that could easily do a better job than him.

Read the entire article. He is very critical of the Chargers, their cry baby attitude...The title is misleading. How he means it is that the Patriots are BETTER than the display they may have done in SD. He comes down pretty hard onthe Chargers, and their fans, in several different paragraphs. There's another thread on this in this forum that I posted those paragraphs.

Thanks, I didn't know that you had already started a thread on it.

I did read the entire article and pointed out at the end that it was an even-handed one but had trouble with the opening lines.

Some mention that the article is sarcastic and some think that it is not bulletin-material. My only question: are such lines (intended sarcasm or not) before an important game against a tough opponent who has beaten us the last two times necessary in the first place?

Irrespective of how sarcastic others' think the article is about, I feel very strongly that those opening lines are classic examples of motivating the other team. If some think that it is not that big a deal, all I ask them to do is to look at the emotion/fury/anger with which many of the Pats talked about the Bolts making preparations for the SB and how that made them determined to fight it out.

Do we need to give similar tools on a platter to the Colts?

It's hard to take any fellow man seriously when they perm their hair.

Known as CHB (Curly Haired Boyfriend) to those who follow the Bosox, the man is a joke insofar as credibility or knowledge regarding his craft. The best bet is always to shun his spew.

Now both projo.com and BH's website have articles that essentially declare that we will beat the Colts. I give up.

Why can't everyone hold their horses? One game at a time...
