Patriots conference call transcript.

Tavon Wilson Conference Call Transcript

Q: You served as a captain and Coach Belichick likes leaders. Do you think that played a factor and if so, how much?

TW: Most definitely. The Patriots are a great organization; there are a lot of great leaders over there. They're looking to bring good people into their organization. They do their background information [checks] on everyone. Yes, I think that was a factor. I always put my team above myself. Coach [Ron] Zook always told me that was going to help me out in the long run.

This stood out to me.

Q: Why did you choose to play corner?

TW: I just thought that was where I was most needed on my football team. We had a safety coming back off of injury and I felt like he was a pretty good player. We had some young guys that could play safety, but we didn't have the other corner, so I said I'd play corner because I thought that was the best fit for the team.

The ultimate team player.

The more I hear about this guy the more I like him!!!

I know a lot of people that sound like a Patriot, but that doesn't mean they deserve to be on the football field. Belichick reached on this kid, big time. He is forever going to be compared to guys like Devon Still, Jerel Worthy, and Ryan Broyles. Those are just 3/4 guys picked directly after him.

Do I hope he succeeds? Yes. Do I think he will? No. Rarely do invisible college players become noteworthy NFL players. Brady was well known at Michigan, politics hurt his draft stock with Henson.

Neither could most of the safeties on the roster last season :p

I've never seen the kid play so I'm not going to judge him until we've at least seen him play a few games in a Patriots jersey.

He's been described as having poor coverage skills with below average instincts and issues with tackling. Picture a safety slightly better than Sergio Brown.

Of course when he's being interviewed by a team known for having players with humility he's gonna say he puts the team first. I don't see how that means anything.

Well, I'm convinced. No way this guy will succeed.

You actually think Belichick would draft someone with poor coverage skills and below average instincts? Really? Why aren't you clamoring to have him fired if you have little faith in his ability to evaluate talent?

You can picture that, whilst I picture someone the Pats felt worthy of drafting with their higher second round pick. If he had no skills, he would not have been drafted. Let's watch it play out. If nothing else, he'll be a fine special teamer.

Hahaha by who? You?

I'm 99.9% certain you just made that up.

Did he not also draft Brandon Meriweather, Darius Butler, and Terrance Wheatly?

He also drafted Vollmer who wasn't invited to any combine.

He most likely wouldn't have been drafted if it wasn't for the Patriots.

What does that have to do with Tayvon and Belichick reaching on draft that is Al Davis resque? Belichick has good picks and bad picks. This just happened to be one his bad ones.

Isn't it a little early to be passing judgement?

Please list the talent evaluator that has hit on every pick. The only thing these picks represent is potential. There is never any definitive right or wrong picks a day after the draft.

Name your source or edit your post. This is libelous if, as i suspect that statement is a pure fabrication

There's a difference between judging a player and a draft pick. Tayvon could have a nice career but it doesn't change the fact the Patriots reached, wasted a valuable resource, and made a bad selection.

They certainly reached, but there is no evidence to suggest it was a bad selection.
