Arkansas DE Jake Bequette

I like the pick, but with some BIG boys in Jones & Bequette and no 3-4 DEs (again), is it fair to say the winds are blowing away from the classic 2-gap 3-4?

BTW, incredibly, it looks like nobody picked Bequette in the draft contest!

I was thinking about that too, but where does Hightower play in a 4-3?

That kind of stands out to me too. But I did notice that Jones,Hightower and Bequette are excellent at run stopping. So it seems the Pats are going in the direction of speed while sacrificing size, but in the process making sure they are stout against the run. I like it.

doesn't it look like it's going to be a hybrid as the base:

Deaderick/Bequette
Wilfork
Love/Fanene
Jones/Ninkovich/Scott

Hightower - SLB
Spikes - MLB
Mayo - WLB

I like this pick. Classic Belichick pick. Seems like a good kid with a strong motor.

We should have some good competition at the OLB/DE hybrid spot.

It's priceless that after years of fans begging to someone to rush the passer, Bill goes out and spends three of his picks on guys that can do that in one draft.

So like the TE in 2010 and RB in 2011, 2012 is the year of Bill's OLB/DE.

This pick is more understandable than the # 48 (when other elite DBs were available).

Bequette is first team ALL-SEC and two year captain of Razorbacks. Along with Jones, we now have the Gronk-Hernandez of the defense pass-rush.

Hope Tebow enjoys his reunion with Bequette!

Watching what I can of Jake Bequette, I like what I see. Seems to play with good pad level, gets around the corner and is quick off the line. Not a fan of his short arms, but he seems to play hard and loves to hit.

And on third and long...

Bequette/Scott
Wilfork
Fanene/Jones

Hightower
Spikes
Mayo
Ninkovich

Yeah?

I'm sure we can all agree what the lesson to be learned here is:

Ignore The Wisdom of Patsderoer...At Your Peril!!

What?

No Tracy White?

Lavonte David is actually very similar to Tracy White, in terms of measurements, which is ironic considering that many suggested he doesnt have the size to be on the Patriots roster. Anyway, don't worry about 3rd down defense, we're much better off without Lavonte Davis, who was available at #48, when Wilson was selected.

This is information directly from rivals, nfpost.com and it is a good description why I like the pick:

Displays a strong bull rush, gets his hands under the pad level of defenders, keeps his base down, feet under him and can overwhelm on contact. Not overly sudden when asked to disengage through contact and change directions, but creates havoc in the backfield and will work till the whistle. Has experience playing on both sides of the line of scrimmage at the college level and I could see him doing the same in the NFL as well. Is a solid run defender, plays the run game with integrity, finds the football quickly and works hard in pursuit. Not overly fluid/flexible when asked to breakdown closing from the backside, but works hard to get there and puts himself in position to consistently make plays on the ball carrier.

Any NFL players you'd compare him to?

I keep reading this guy is SLOW, he doesn't look slow to me

Without question.

I see us as a Super Hybrid, employing the following sets, in order of how much I LOVE them:

245
425
43
34

...pretty much at Mad Bill's whim...which is exactly how it should be.

I was thinking about that too, but where does Hightower play in a 4-3?

HighTower commands tremendous Core Strength, remarkable Fluidity for such a big guy, and surprisingly decent Verticity ~ as long as you don't ask'm to cover Flankers!!

In a "43", he can play either End.

In a "425", ditto.

In a "245", he could actually play ether Flanker ~ Sam or Will.

And in a "34", he could also play either Flanker.

In other words, his versatility ~ his ability to project to an high level in multiple roles ~ is RIDICULOUS!! :rocker:

I keep reading this guy is SLOW, he doesn't look slow to me

It could be a little bad info. He showed up at the combine @ 274 lbs, which is about 12 lbs more than he played at last fall. He ran a 4.82 40 yard, which is on the good side of average I would say for a 274 lb'er. I am sure that when we look at the film from last fall, he is playing faster than that (at 262). scout inc in espn insider has a typo that list his 40 at the slowest for all Defensive Ends- 5.82 (Jake Bequette 2012 NFL Combine Results - ESPN). They have a huge following, so I think that this might be where the information of him being slow began.
