For those who didn't watch any of these before the draft.... just to give you an idea of what these players are like.

Both are smart, high character guys. Both have ideal size weighing in at about 265lbs each.

Both are OLB's in a 34 front... In a 43, Jones is a DE and Hightower is OLB. I think Hightower could also see time at ILB and DE in sub packages.

Donta Hightower. Lines up all over the field. Loves hitting QBs. Leader of the Roll Tide National Champions that had 4 players go in the 1st rd. Coached by Nick Saban.

Belichick mustve fallen in love watching this type of film. Since we already have Spikes and Mayo at ILB, you have to think Belichick felt Hightower was just too good to pass up, and can also play OLB/DE in our hybrid defense.

Chandler Jones. Strictly a 34 OLB or 43 DE in our system. Mayocks 9th ranked prospect in the entire draft. Long arms and tall. High motor. A middle class man's Jason Pierre-Paul?

Path to the Draft... Says 20 teams had him in for Private workouts. Funny enough, Patriots were NOT one of those teams. Says he only talked to New England at the Combine.

Seeing Chandler Jones getting caught by the OL on the interception return suggests he's probably not a conventional OLB.

What I like:

His long arms enable him to make quality arm tackles.
Gets a good jump off the snap
Gets his long arms up in passing lanes
Looks into the backfield whilst engaged.

Not so good:

Seems out of position a fair bit biting on fakes
Gets very upright
Looks quite raw

I'm not sure we should expect too much out of him next season but there's enough there to be enthused about. His length is very exciting (ahem). Coaching will bring the best out of it.

I don't think he's as much of a "project" as people think.

His role will mostly be to get after the QB. He's a smart kid too so he shouldn't have issues picking up the playbook.

His "high potential" comes from the fact that he's only 20 and a half years old, was coached at a bad Syracuse team, and has a frame to add more strength.

Still, having watched all three games, he had 3x sacks, 2x forced fumbles and one interception. Now that's not too shabby is it?

Thanks for posting my video. I'll have the rest soon in 3-4 days of Hightower.

No prob. Thanks for posting it!! I didn't know you posted it until I realized it only had about 3 hits at the time I watched it.

Would you happen to have the tape of Chandler Jones going up against 2011 first rd pick Anthony Contonzo? Mayock says its impressive but I never saw it.

He stumbled when he caught it while the OL was already running toward him. He was accelerating but never managed to get by him. 4.8 speed is not bad for a DE/OLB that weighs 266.

One thing about Jones, though not a heavy DE (I've seen him listed from 247-265), he seems to have deceptive strength, which will only improve when he gets bigger.

My thoughts as well. After seeing JPP's SB performance, maybe BB said "We need one of those!" :D

His combine weigh in was 261 or 265lbs. Pro day was 255. I think his top weight he can put on max is 270. Similar to Willie.

I like the video of Jones against West Virginia (15th ranked at the time) - first game back after the injury - he seems to get better during the course of the game - looks very competitive and they end up double teaming him once they recognized the beast..

Funny thing is if you watch the first minute of the hightower highlights, in the NFL, all the QB hits he makes, would be illegal! ):

But the other thing is that this kid is fast! I don't know what he 40 times were, but on the field, he plays fast!

Did you see the first Giants vs. Patriots Super Bowl?

Brady was hit late numerous times and the refs didn't even call 1 penalty for roughing the passer.

It happens in the NFL more than you think.

Thing that struck me in first video was the size of his thighs. Seemed proportionally larger. But that could account for the "deceptive strength" you mention; if he is using his lower body to assist with his leverage.
