Patriots F.O. must see a weak lower end of the draft

It was 2 players they want that they drafted but knowing now that this leaves them dry after the second round.

Belichick and Co. Must see little talent in the later rounds and possibly will keep his 2 2nd rounders and take off the last 4 rounds.

This is so unlike normal but I like the change and let the other teams grab at straws after tomorrow.

He struck gold in the first and should be able to get somebody really good with 48. After that, I vote he uses 62 to get a 2nd next year and just enough late picks to round out the camp roster.

I am not sure,but can teams obtain a simple late draft pick by dealing with another team to get a pick next season?

In other words,can NE get a 4th Round pick this year and just give that team a 3rd next year?

Yeah, as unlikely as it seems for Belichick, it seemed pretty obvious that there was a limited amount of talent in the draft this year.

I honestly don't see more than 4-5 guys from the entire process (UFDA's too) making this 53 man roster, which will be great to plug some of those holes and add precious depth and competition to areas of need.

I think Belichick's choice of quality over quantity this year was a brilliant move, and kudos to him for once again doing a fine job.

Another couple of guys tomorrow of any quality whatsover would be just what this defense needed, and I wouldn't be the least surprised if we saw a player trade too of some sort.

maybe he thought strengthening the front 7 was more important then taking a risk on another Taylor Price / Brandon Tate / Tyrone McKenzie type of player who won't even get playing time.

I think the pats have enough fringe guys who need tons of development and not enough top tier guys. they don't need quantity this year, they need some studs.......

Absolutly. You can obtain a fourth rounder in this year's draft ( let's say @ 120 ) by a straight up deal ( @120 for ours 3rd in 2013 ) or you can trade a player for that spot .

That's a good point. With all the picks we've made in the past 2 years this team is full of depth. It makes more sense to trade up and get a player that will actually contribute then to take a lesser player and another who will just get cut anyway.

Of those, I'd say safety is the only really bad need. Our first four CB's are McCourty, Arrington, Dowling, Moore. We seemed to manage last year with the big guys we had on our D/line (and didn't draft one last year) and I don't think the need is any greater this year than last and with WR's, we can always attack the position next year as we did this. So I think safety is the one position that absolutely needs to be addressed with BPA at one of the other positions you mentioned.

It has been widely reported the last couple of days by Greg Bedard and SMY over at the Globe that McCourty is going to play S full time this year.

I see a move at CB with great value there and possibly DE ..

I can't see them trying to get to many picks for this year.. I could see them flip one of those picks into 2013..

My choices that follow the Pat's type player. i.e High Character and love Football

You don't need late round draft picks to fill out the roster. This can be done with undrafted players.

I agree. I really think the front office is going to have UDFAs fill roles on this team, rather than taking chances on 4-7 rounders.

Given this teams past with UDFA, I'm completely all right with that.

Let's go a step further...the Patriots were exceptionally lively in free agency, snapping up 2nd-3rd tier guys to provide the kind of depth and competition that usually comes from mid-round draftees.

Looks to me like they planned ahead for a small, top-heavy draft class.

I think it has a little to do with the fact that we're currently in the process of 'depth management' in the Words of Kraft. We are fortunate that there is depth at positions such as CB and WR...tot he extent where we could pick up a pretty decent UDFA WR and then worry about that pick higher up next year as we will be fine this season at that position.

We have a lot of depth on our team already and really only two glaring needs. The front seven and DB. We've addressed the front seven twice and been aggressive in doing so and we can pick up a DB in the second round given the depth and value at the position there.

Then we have another second round pick to draft a RB or OL-man.

Simple fact is they don't see the need to make too many picks because I don't think the envision something like 8 picks making the team and you can find camp fodder/p-squad prospects in UDFA!

What I do see us doing is moving one or both of the picks back. I'd be amazed if we go through day three without one pick and I could see us acquire a future pick too.

And they could always trade down with their two remaining picks and end up drafting another 6 players should they choose. I think it came down to drafting two players at the top because the value was so high. If both of those players were gone they might have traded back like other years. There's so many variables that I don't think you can make a blanket statement just because they broke the trend.
