I've read very little about this guy on this board. I haven't even seen him mocked to the Pats in Round 2 around here.

27. Harrison Smith

S

6-2

213

Analysis: An edge rusher like Shea McClellin could fit here, but Smith is more of a sure thing and the Ravens could pounce if the team decides to wait.

31. Lavonte David

LB

6-1

233

Analysis: It seems unlikely the Patriots would make both first-round picks, but for a defense that wants to get faster and more athletic, David fits the bill in sub packages.

Mike Reiss mock draft: New England Patriots will go defensive in Round 1 - ESPN Boston

A guy some people has 1st round talent but not measurables. OI wouldn't spend a 1st round pick on this guy...a second maybe. I would keep an eye on Ronnell Lewis personally. I've heard the Pats like him and he's got the measurables.

Harrison Smith @ 27 would be a "throw the television out the window" type of pick.

Patriots have worked out a handful of nickle LBers, so they're in the market for one of those. David seems like the best cover LB and supposedly has a very high football IQ.

Ever see how tall Reiss is? This guy is s Reiss binkie. Third round at best IMHO. If he was bigger than 5'11" or 6' maybe a second rounder.
David might not be very big, ..........but he is slow too. He runs 4.7 40. We already have him on our roster and he is bigger and way faster. His name is Josh Barrett and he has a contract that is $1mm and BB has let him stay on the roster. If you need someone like David we have him. Make him a sub LB.

Ten times the better choice is Zack Brown who is the best in coverage. 105 Tackles 5.5. sacks, 3 INTs almost 6' 2" and hand held speed better than any present Patriot other than Stallworth at 4.29. Better 3 cone than David and much stronger.
David has not done anything on tape to make him better than Brown. Brown has slid from end of first to second rounder. Maybe he is there at #48. I think you can get David at #62 with ease.

Zack Brown=He was a semifinalist for the Butkus Award, a first-team All-ACC selection.
David=First Team All-Big Ten and won Butkus award by having more tackles.

Is ACC a better conference?
Do Nebraska players translate well into the NFL?
Do you want a very small 225lb (versus 240lbs) short, slow LB? Evidently Reiss does. But like I say, Barrett can play the sub package OLB that Reiss envisions.
Meanwhile we could have ten guys covering but if we don't put pressure on the opposing QB, this Draft is a complete bust. I don't care if BB is your best friend....epic fail with the best set of rushers in years.

FYI, very small and slow. Nothing to see here.

If the Pats are going into this Draft to secure a nickle LB in the first round, I am sure the Koolaiders would be fine with that BS. But EPIC EPIC EPIC fail if that is the case.

Blackluck, you have a very high football I.Q. but you ain't on my board if you are smaller than 6' tall, less than 220lb and run really slow. Plus if you play for Nebraska who do not translate well to the NFL, I will take another "be sure" look.
Shanley, Rudd, Raiola, Kelsey, Carriker, Incognito, Watt are you present starters. There are a few other JAGS. Watt is the only one with All Pro credentials.

I've been mocking him to Patriots since October, thanks. ;)

And I'm hardly the only one who's Mocked him hither.

The best defensive player in the 2012 draft.

Good God is that Mayo Clinic's music? Haven't seen much of your stuff this draft season.

  • One of the most instinctive defensive players in the draft

  • One of the best pure football players in the draft
Question is, how would Belichick employ such a player to succeed in his defense? If you have the answer, than he's a legitimate consideration.

OK, thanks for clarifying. I didn't look through all 100+ pages of posts in the 'Ye Ole Official 2012 Mock Draft' thread. I was referring to the mocks people have posted in separate threads recently.

If you ain't reading OTG's stuff, you are missing out. In a bubble, I love David. I just am not sure how he fits in the patriots scheme, regardless if they run a 4-3 or 3-4.
I will say that the Patriots had huge struggles covering TE's last year and this guy is going to be an excellent cover LB.

Yep...........................I would use a first on him in a heartbeat. The Maddenites will hate him, but they know nothing about real football, which makes it that much better. Incredibly productive and he could play in a variety of sets, one of the best players in this draft, period.

A few years back Belichick brought in Tank Williams to be a hybrid safety/ LB to play in nickel and dime sets, and he could actually use David on every down in a variety of roles. If they get him they get a great football player who will contribute big time. Exceptional player, exactly what any coach would want.

I love Reiss, but that's probably the worst mock I've seen in the last month or so.

Only to people who care more about arm length than tackles.

He's a situational player. You wanna spend a first round player on a situational player? Be my guest. I'll wait until the late second or third round.

I find it hard to see BB seeing value in him in the first. Pick 48? Absolutely.
