final mock from sleepless in Canton: trade up to 21; Mercilus, Still, Jenkins, & more

Its after midnight - What better time to make critical decisions and suffer flights of fantasy. Here is my final mock for the Pats including several trades.

1. Goals

a. I want to end up with 4-5 players, all of whom have the potential to be at least in regular rotations and sub packages.

b. I want to be heavily weighted to the defensive side of the ball

c. I want to add picks to the 2013 draft.

2. Assumptions:

a. We re-sign Andre Carter and Welker eventually either signs his tender or gets a deal.

b. Because we added so many proven players to the low to mid levels of the roster in FA, there are fewer spots that going to be available for "Developmental Rookies", so drafting more than 5 would be a waste.

3. Pre-draft trades

a. The Pats trade Ryan Mallet to the Browns for the #37 pick - value for the Pats as they move 37 slots higher for an asset who wasn't going to see the field for the foreseeable future, and value to the Browns for a potential franchise QB...and all the other reasons I've mentioned so often.

4. The draft. The Pats go in with the 27th, 31st, 37th, 48th, 62nd, 93rd, and 126th picks

*** TRADE ****

The Bengals trade the 21st and 191 (815) to the Pats 27th and 93rd picks (804) The Bengals do the deal because they added to their already good defense (Kirkpatrick) with their first pick. Their next need is on the OL. There are some good ones available at the end of the first round. They keep the Pick and select either Adams, Kunz. or Glenn.

a. With the 21st pick the Pats select Whitney Mercilus. DE/OLB

- He's has the prototype size and speed that BB likes in his DE/OLB types. Relentless motor, great character. Instantly becomes a situational pass rusher, while he starts his long development into at true 3 down 3-4 OLB. He had great production in college - Risk - He only did it one year. (Jones or McClellin are alternative picks}

BB makes the trade because he's afraid that Houston (the loss of Williams) or Detroit (need another outside rusher) might grab him. The Bengals were looking to move down and became the best available trade partner. Pats fans are delirious, as after a decade of waiting they finally see BB draft an outside pass rusher.

The Colts trade the 34th pick and a 2013 5th round pick to the Pats for the 31st pick.
The Colts make the deal to leapfrog the Giants and Rams both of whom might be looking for receivers. The Colts want to make sure they get one of Fleener, Hill, or Randell. All 3 might be gone by 34, especially if the Rams don't pick a WR with #6.

b. With the 34th pick the Pats select Devon Still DE/DT Has the size to be a 3-4 DE, and some quickness to push the middle as a 4-3 DT - Inconsistent motor drops him to us here. BB decides he can fix that, and the talent is worth the risk and fills a need. He was there at 31 and BB took the risk that the Giants and Rams would pass, and he picks up a future 5th for his efforts (and likely a high one) (Worthy or Reyes are alternative picks)

c. With pick # 37th pick the Pats select Janoris Jenkins CB BB rolls the dice on the best coverage CB in the draft. This might be a little early, but he's the BPA and why risk it just so you'll feel better picking him at 48 or 62. Its definitely a boom or bust pick. Trust your locker room,hope for the best and prepare for the worst. This is the best place for this kid to land. If it works out, its the steal of the draft, if it doesn't you still have 2 more picks in this round. His contract should be full of stipulations based on his conduct. He earned it. (alternative is to trade the pick into next year)

d. With pick #48 the Pats select Bruce Irvin OLBThis is a luxury pick. I see him being a stud special teamer right out of the box. But beyond the pass rushing potential, I see him eventually being a cover LB who has the size and speed to cover TEs, and the suddenness to blitz from the inside as well as outside. You can't teach speed and this kid has it. BTW it was a tough choice between Irvin and Zack Brown. I'll be interested to see if you think I made the right choice. Feel free to try and change my mind. (Alternative - Trade this pick for a 2nd next year plus a 5th rounder this year)

e. With Pick #62 the Pats select Trumaine Johnson S/CB -In a passing league you need safeties with CB skills. I'm drafting this kid to be a S first. I love his size and ball skills. A special teamer right away,who should see time in sub packages also CB d epth. (Alternative here would be to trade out of the pick and then trade back into the late 3rd to grab Iloki or Martin but I liked Johnsons skill set and position flexibility a bit more)

f. Pick 93 was traded to the Bengals

The clock is ticking on Bill's old friend and he needs to add talent THIS year, if he's going to keep his job. As for the Pats, they will add a another future 4th round pick that will probably be 10-20 slots higher than this one, and a late pick to start to build the PS. esides I have my 5 guys. Now I'm just looking toward next year.

h. With pick #191 (from the Bengals) the Pats select Matt McCants OT

To be honest I was just looking for a good late round developmental OLman who hopefully will end up on the PS. This one comes from Merrill Hoge's Tie Knot (alternative selection Mosely Auburn OT) - this is OJ's find. I really didn't look past round 4 this draft, so I'm just stealing ideas from my betters

With the 213th selection the Pats chose Dale Moss WR

I grabbed this pick to make sure BB got the top guy on his UDFA list. I chose Moss because he has good speed for a 6'5 WR. I recognize the need to get younger at WR, but I also realize that there is NO need for this year. So I picked a guy with great athletic potential, who is very raw, and will probably end up on the PS and not be a factor in any roster decisions, BUT will give us a get up for next year, and the kid will have a year to start to learn his craft. BTW - this is a OTG find. I take no credit.....or blame.

I like it!!

Good trades which lets us pick up some key players for this defense as the offense is pretty set.

I was worried about Whitney Mercilus might be another Aaron Mabin but after watching some tape on this guy he is a natural passrusher.

Devon Still has been on my list for a while and is dropping so i would love to see him drop into the second round for us to pick up.

Ken, Mallet is not a West coast QB, so unless they change their offensive philosophy I don't see it.

As far as Still, BB can't fix an inconsistant motor, that is inside a player. Hand placement, playing tall those are things a coach can fix.

I love the players that you picked, (rather have Keyes than Still).

I am confident that BB has the lowdown on Jenkins, and if he is on thier board where you have him being picked is value.

I don't know if he has the same comfort level with Irvin.

I went down your pre draft check list of goals and assumptions....
Check marks on all....
Then we get get to your Mallet trade.......I want to say ridiculous, no way, never will happen......because BB just won't let the kid go.......But then I thought about the Matt Cassell trade (top of the second), the QB need for so many teams....and you match that with the bounty of extra picks Cleveland has....If your the Browns....why not. Mallet is the complete opposite of their current guy, McCoy.....Mallet has the size and big arm....and a year of NFL seasoning. From the Pats point of view.....great value at #37....considering they got a 33 for Cassell. It's fun to think about, that's for sure.
And I love love love your draft....right down the line. Especially where you slotted Jenkins.....replace a predraft "poor character guy" Mallet with this years version....Jenkins. Thinking of all the high #2 CBs that have failed at NE....why not shoot for the moon. Plus, I like a little media drama to spice up this tight ass team.

From the Pats point of view.....great value at #37....considering they got a 33 for Cassell. It's fun to think about, that's for sure.

To be fair, pretty much everybody and their dog knew that the only way the Pats were keeping Cassel is if Brady suffered a major setback in his rehab. Once it became clear that wasn't going to happen, there was zero reason to hang on to MFC.

Meh.

Don't like the Mallett trade one bit, unless they're certain he'll never amount to anything. Even then, I'd question if CLE would give that much for him.

If they think he has potential, the smart play is to hold on to him and get a greater ROI down the road or groom him as Brady's heir apparent.

Mallett isn't going anywhere but, even if he does, he wont' go to Cleveland because of their offensive system. Never going to happen unless they change their playbook

I really like the draft though. Hits all the needs. Don;'t see us taking a corner and a safety. I think they take one or the other and that may tell us what they have in store for McCourty. Another pick will be spent on a RB somewhere.

However Kettani has been released of his service in the Navy now so if they plan on bringing in a vet, drafting a RB may be a little pointless. Picking one up in UDFA in that scenario would make more sense.

I don't know what to make of Johnson's alleged concerns. It's reportedly a 'sense of entitlement' but I've heard that one many a time and it never changes much...usually a scout trying to try and throw other teams off of a player's scent so he can fall to them.

Point well taken sir. I agree with you on the TB heir. Mallett has got four years to "get it". If after four years Brady hangs them up, Mallett is ready. With Hoyer in front of him he gets no reps. After the fact, it appears that all of the Mallett misinformation was started by one dude. Mallett finished college with a 3.2 average. He had a very respectable 26 Wunderlick, same as Hoyer. Breeze had a 27, Manning had a 29. He spent a day prior to the 2011 Draft with BB and showed his football smarts. Did BB pick him up just to recycle him? Doubt it. He might not be as smooth as Luck but has a better arm. He surely can't move like RGIII but he is not any slower than Brady. Right now today he would without doubt be a top ten pick in 2012. Third behind the two above and I am not sure he doesn't wind up better than them.

I think Hoyer is the better fit for Holmgren's offense. If anyone goes who's contract happens to expire after 2012 it is Hoyer. Get while the getting is good. I can see a scenario of Hoyer to Cleveland in the second plus our 2013 7th if he does not start or something in that line of thinking.

The better scenario is the Browns have thirteen picks!!!!two picks in the 4th, 5th and three (2 comps) in the 7th. Right in Ol' Bill's wheelhouse. Does a 4th, 5th and 7th seem fair for a QB who was an UDFA if we can't get that second rounder? Is Hoyer not better right now than Weeden or Tanneyhill? Is he better than noodle armed McCoy? Does not his RFA agreement he just signed, cheaper than what they have to pay a Weeden? Albeit never a starter he has more "ready" NFL experience and behind TB and Bill OB he might be the best Holmgren could hope for IMO.

Cleveland has the opportunity to retool their offensive weapons....across the board. Their RB is gone, their WRs are dreadful, and the QB has no right being an NFL starter. Sure Holmgren made his bones with this West Coast thing....but even he has to recognize that that era has passed. Maybe if his team was playing in a dome with a bunch of All Pros to catch the 5 yard swing and timing passes...but...It's a downfield game now which requires QBs to see the field. McCoy can't.....like Sanchez, he needs lanes to pass because of his height. But in a defense dominated division, I'd prefer a QB that sees over the lines instead of having to wait for passing lanes to develop. Suppose BB obliged Cleveland with Mallet ( just for fun, relax), Holmgren could add the Bama RB, a top 3 WR in the 20s....and Mallet in the 2nd. The new Cleveland offense would finally have some talent, and excite the fans, and the west coast offense that enabled them to draft at #4 in the first place would be history.

This one comes from Merrill Hoge's Tie Knot (alternative selection Mosely Auburn OT) - this is OJ's find. I really didn't look past round 4 this draft, so I'm just stealing ideas from my betters

With the 213th selection the Pats chose Dale Moss WR

I grabbed this pick to make sure BB got the top guy on his UDFA list. I chose Moss because he has good speed for a 6'5 WR. I recognize the need to get younger at WR, but I also realize that there is NO need for this year. So I picked a guy with great athletic potential, who is very raw, and will probably end up on the PS and not be a factor in any roster decisions, BUT will give us a get up for next year, and the kid will have a year to start to learn his craft. BTW - this is a OTG find. I take no credit.....or blame.

Good job sir. Lots of work. I will take a stab at this. Seattle has the twelfth pick if we want to try there for Barron. He is o.k. for me but I don't see an All Pro. But that seems to be the NFL "it" guy. We can trade #27 and #48 in an exact points match and get Barron or a Cox or an Ingram. Or....If Seattle wants to go Kuechly in Round one and still need a DE to rush the passer, I am sure Pete Carroll knows enough about Nick Perry and he might still be there at #27. Seattle's second #43 and third #75 Rounders might entice BB.

Shocker! Pats use #31 for TE Fleener? Another TE who can play slot and WR and is insurance for 2013 if Hernandez or Gronk play Welker games. This guy could be the big WR the Pats need. 6'6" and runs a 4.5 , is smart, runs good patterns and has nice soft hands. He also will block better than Hernandez anyway. Label him as a WR if you want but multifaceted. A BB type puzzler.

Pats use #43 for Vinny Curry DE/OLB. Makes a lot of sense.

Pats Trade #48 to (?) as I say Weeden still sits on the board here, for a 2013 first rounder.

Pats use #62 for DT/DE Jared Crick. Very much under the radar. A bigger faster Wright whom BB loved. I was thinking Zack Brown or some have mentioned Lavonte David as OLB in sub packages, but with the arrival of Gregory and the fact we have Barrett who is as big and fast as those OLBs, plug him in OLB.

Pats use #75 for CB/S Trumaine Johnson

Pats Trade #93 for a forth and fifth from Cleveland who have two in each round. They pick up #100 in round four and #160 in round five.

Pats use #100 for DE/DT Brett Roy the Nevada wild man. Maybe a poor mans Jared Allen. 18.5 tackles for loss and 10 sacks. 4.8 speed. Came to Nevada as a Safety. OLB? Sub Package DT you can't catch.

Pats use #126 for WR Ryan Broyles for a returner and 2013 insurance as most of our WR are done with contracts if we red shirt him.

Pats use #160 for OT Tom Compton out of South Dakota.

Pats trade Hoyer to the Browns for 2013 second rounder if he plays in 2012 or a 2013 third rounder if he does not start. Better option than Weeden.

I don't like Mercilus nearly enough to trade up for him and Still is just OK to me. Then you take 3 gives with high upside but also character concerns right in a row. Bill spent a lot of time cleaning up the locker room so I can't see this. Maybe one of those three but all three, no.

I like it. It's in the upper 95% of mocks I've seen.

I'd take McClellin over Mercilus 100 times out of 100 though.

But beyond the pass rushing potential, I see him eventually being a cover LB who has the size and speed to cover TEs, and the suddenness to blitz from the inside as well as outside. You can't teach speed and this kid has it. BTW it was a tough choice between Irvin and Zack Brown. I'll be interested to see if you think I made the right choice. Feel free to try and change my mind. Irvin did play on the ST coverage units in college, I could easily see him as a ST core player and 3rd down pass rusher.

Bottom line BB has to draft some players to help get that defense off the field on third down.

Maybin is 230 lbs, Mericlus is "full size"

I was looking at tape not weight

I thought Maybin was more like 245-250 at draft time.

Its after midnight - What better time to make critical decisions and suffer flights of fantasy. Here is my final mock for the Pats including several trades.

1. Goals

a. I want to end up with 4-5 players, all of whom have the potential to be at least in regular rotations and sub packages.

b. I want to be heavily weighted to the defensive side of the ball

c. I want to add picks to the 2013 draft.

2. Assumptions:

a. We re-sign Andre Carter and Welker eventually either signs his tender or gets a deal.

b. Because we added so many proven players to the low to mid levels of the roster in FA, there are fewer spots that going to be available for "Developmental Rookies", so drafting more than 5 would be a waste.

3. Pre-draft trades

a. The Pats trade Ryan Mallet to the Browns for the #37 pick - value for the Pats as they move 37 slots higher for an asset who wasn't going to see the field for the foreseeable future, and value to the Browns for a potential franchise QB...and all the other reasons I've mentioned so often.

4. The draft. The Pats go in with the 27th, 31st, 37th, 48th, 62nd, 93rd, and 126th picks

*** TRADE ****

The Bengals trade the 21st and 191 (815) to the Pats 27th and 93rd picks (804) The Bengals do the deal because they added to their already good defense (Kirkpatrick) with their first pick. Their next need is on the OL. There are some good ones available at the end of the first round. They keep the Pick and select either Adams, Kunz. or Glenn.

a. With the 21st pick the Pats select Whitney Mercilus. DE/OLB

- He's has the prototype size and speed that BB likes in his DE/OLB types. Relentless motor, great character. Instantly becomes a situational pass rusher, while he starts his long development into at true 3 down 3-4 OLB. He had great production in college - Risk - He only did it one year. (Jones or McClellin are alternative picks}

BB makes the trade because he's afraid that Houston (the loss of Williams) or Detroit (need another outside rusher) might grab him. The Bengals were looking to move down and became the best available trade partner. Pats fans are delirious, as after a decade of waiting they finally see BB draft an outside pass rusher.

****TRADE*****

The Colts trade the 34th pick and a 2013 5th round pick to the Pats for the 31st pick.
The Colts make the deal to leapfrog the Giants and Rams both of whom might be looking for receivers. The Colts want to make sure they get one of Fleener, Hill, or Randell. All 3 might be gone by 34, especially if the Rams don't pick a WR with #6.

b. With the 34th pick the Pats select Devon Still DE/DT Has the size to be a 3-4 DE, and some quickness to push the middle as a 4-3 DT - Inconsistent motor drops him to us here. BB decides he can fix that, and the talent is worth the risk and fills a need. He was there at 31 and BB took the risk that the Giants and Rams would pass, and he picks up a future 5th for his efforts (and likely a high one) (Worthy or Reyes are alternative picks)

c. With pick # 37th pick the Pats select Janoris Jenkins CB BB rolls the dice on the best coverage CB in the draft. This might be a little early, but he's the BPA and why risk it just so you'll feel better picking him at 48 or 62. Its definitely a boom or bust pick. Trust your locker room,hope for the best and prepare for the worst. This is the best place for this kid to land. If it works out, its the steal of the draft, if it doesn't you still have 2 more picks in this round. His contract should be full of stipulations based on his conduct. He earned it. (alternative is to trade the pick into next year)

d. With pick #48 the Pats select Bruce Irvin OLBThis is a luxury pick. I see him being a stud special teamer right out of the box. But beyond the pass rushing potential, I see him eventually being a cover LB who has the size and speed to cover TEs, and the suddenness to blitz from the inside as well as outside. (Alternative here would be to trade out of the pick and then trade back into the late 3rd to grab Iloki or Martin but I liked Johnsons skill set and position flexibility a bit more)

f. Pick 93 was traded to the Bengals

The Pats trade pick #126 to the Washington Redskins for pick #213 and 4th round pick in 2013.

The clock is ticking on Bill's old friend and he needs to add talent THIS year, if he's going to keep his job. As for the Pats, they will add a another future 4th round pick that will probably be 10-20 slots higher than this one, and a late pick to start to build the PS. esides I have my 5 guys. Now I'm just looking toward next year.

How about the quickest, most painless Draft in Pats history?
#27+#48 to AZ for #13=Barron
AZ press has mentioned Pats to gain picks as the Cards have no second rounder and the need an OT and it appears Martin or Adams can be there.

#31, #62, #93+#126 to Philly for #15=Chandler Jones
The annual BB / Andy Reid trade.

Then they can take the weekend off. Not a great fan of either but seems to be the pundants and posters choice. I could live with those picks.

Keep in mind we will more than likely only get two wins from this Draft in the three year term of the maturation process anyway.

BB loaded up on FA more than any other NFL team for a reason.
