Picking our way through a mock first round of NFL draft - The Boston Globe

He's the closest thing we have to Will McDonough. Except the late McDonough would publish his mock the day of the draft.

This confirms the obvious: We need to draft a safety in the first, even if it's a slight reach like Harrison Smith.

Then another team trades for our #31 to get QB Brandon Weeden. We get the Browns' first next year, and their third this year, which is the fourth pick.

I wholeheartedly endorse this. If Sergio Brown sees the field in any other capacity than ST, then I know the season will not be successful.

I would trade #31 for the Browns 2013 #1 straight up. That pick has a great chance to be a top ten.

Funny, the last time Cleveland traded away a future pick was in 2007.

Most draftniks thought, early in the season, that the Cowboys had gotten a top-10 pick, while the Pats' trade with SF had netted them a pick around 25.

Didn't turn out that way, though. . . .

Was thinking exactly the same. That pick would be the closest thing to drafting in the zone where we had Mayo, Seymour and McGinest.

I know. But that is irrelevant, it's a probability thing and when you're always good it's impossible to get a high pick without trading for it. With Balt, Pitt, Cincy twice + NFC East the Browns have very little chance of not having a top twelve pick.

I'd be more mad at the fact if they took Harrison Smith in the 1st or 2nd never mind the 27th pick. This is one player who is off my list. His film bites and I don't care what his combine numbers were. Very disappointing to say the least. Although the trade is nice.

Pats pass on Whitney Mercilus twice in this draft.

Doesn't matter to me if the Pats make a couple of moves, trade 31 for a 2nd rd this year or whatever happens, the Pats need to use 4 picks in the first 2 rounds. The Offense is set, Koppen is resigned and the Pats can pick a real good center next year (Barrett - Alabama, Holmes -USC) but we need to get the following:

2 DL/DE
1 OLB
1 Safety

DL - The Defensive line has to be rebuilt. Fanene is a good role player but the Pats need a strong DL and DE player. It would help the defense immensely and it is the biggest weakness of the Pats.
OLB - The Pats have solid ILB and nothing at OLB. Ninko is a role player but where is that aggressive hard nosed outside player that will intimidate. Scott may help ILB and Scott OLB but the defense badly needs a physical OLB.
Safety - McCourty is not a safety, Gregory is a backup, Chung isn't always healthy and a leader is needed. I would love the Pats to get Simth or Iloka in this years draft and pick up another safety in the 3rd or fourth rounds.

There is a core of good defensive players including Mayo, Spikes, McCourty, Chung and hopefully Dowling. The oldest one is Mayo and he is 26. Rebuild the defense now and pick starters not projects!

My fear is that the Patriot's 2nd pick will be the 48th pick when all
the good OLBs and DLs may be off the board just like last year.

Smith would make too much sense for the Patriots. Instead they will draft some obscure guard from Mooseknuckle Saskatchewan. Or a TE...

As juicy as that trade with Cleveland sounds, I can't really see it happening. First, is Weeden really that can't miss guy you gotta have? To be honest, is he a better prospect than Ryan Mallett? Why not toss the 2013 1st rounder our way straight up for Mallett instead?

If the Browns really wanted to move up for Weeden, why wouldn't they try and package something with their #37 instead?

Obviously it's just theoretical so it doesn't really need to be answered. But the answer would be that the Browns could jump start their constant rebuilding.

If they took Claiborne at #5 to pair with Haden they'd look good there but still have crap for offense.

Picture :

#22 - Kendall Wright
#31 - Brandon Weedon
#36 - Doug Martin

They would actually have some building blocks. They would without #31 but as they need QB, RB, WR they may choose to go all in as this regime is in it's 3rd offseason and seemingly getting nowhere.

I agree it might be a Top 10 pick.

But the Browns would NOT do that trade.

Whoever made this mock is a total idiot.

The Browns have 2 picks in the 1st rd. One of their picks is #22. Why would they waste a potential Top 10 pick next year for our #31 when they could trade back from one of their spots in Rd 1, or even take Weeden at 22.

The stupidity is baffling and I can't believe people get paid to write such crap.

Oh, and the Browns have #37 overall anyways.

Why would they give up a Top 10 pick in 2013, just to move up 6 spots this year?

LMFAO... Bedard lost some respect with that mock.

re: Globe's Greg Bedard's Mock 4/15: S Harrison Smith, trade for Browns' 3rd & 2013 1st

the problem is belichick always has a surprise for us on draft day. last year no one really knew the pats were interested in Solder when all the mock drafts had us taking some pass rusher. Same thing with McCourty the year before. Come to think of it Mayo was a bit of a surprise as well.

I say BB goes corner back. with the addition of Steve Gregory, who is solid but not spectacular, the safety position should be slightly better than last year. At CB there's McCourty and fill-in-blank. Dowling could be a starter but he has injury issues all the time.

Mayo wasn't really a surprise. It was leaked a few days before the draft actually.

Not sure about CB in rd 1. We've used so many high picks on CB's in the past few years (McCourty, Dowling, Darius Butler). Pats seem to have spent a lot of time with Ron Brooks and might be taking him in the later rounds.

I think with Nick Perry, Melvin Ingram, and Courtyney Upshaw, all visiting New England, there's a good chance we draft one of them.

re: Globe's Greg Bedard's Mock 4/15: S Harrison Smith, trade for Browns' 3rd & 2013 1st

First, Greg Bedard's Mock draft should be in the Mock Draft Fail Thread.

Second, Harrison Smith rated the #47 overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft.

NFL Draft - 2012 NFL Draft Prospects - CBSSports.com - NFLDraftScout.com

Thus, the selection of Harrison Smith in the first round provides no value whatsoever. Furthermore, Harrison Smith is one of the most overrated and overhyped draft prospects in the 2012 NFL Draft.

The New England Patriots would achieve greater value by either selecting Alfonzo Dennard or Jamell Fleming with the #62 overall pick and converting either collegiate cornerback to a professional safety.

re: Globe's Greg Bedard's Mock 4/15: S Harrison Smith, trade for Browns' 3rd & 2013 1st

The only scenario I could see the Browns trading with the Pats is if their minds were locked on a player like Fleener. In that case I could see them trying to work ahead of the 9ers,Giants and Colts at 27. Quite a offensive overhaul if they were to get Richardson,K wright and Fleener in 2012.

Or it could be vice verse and the Pats trading up to 22 with Cleveland for a player they like and Cleveland picking up the extra 3rd rounder.

Why Weeden at 22 anyway? Is there a threat that someone is going to want this guy? If Aaron Rodgers can fall into the 20's then I think it is safe to say there is a good chance Weeden will last until 37.

Pats pass on Whitney Mercilus twice in this draft.

Thank God!
