#27 (680) + #31 (600) = #23 (760) + #54 (360) + #87 (155) + #222 (2.6) + #242 (1.2)

Trade with the Lions, go up for pick 23 and get picks 54 and 87 and also 222 and 242 to round things out, Detroit has 3 7th rounders, so the 2 7ths to round it out should be fine with them, they get 2 1st rounders not dropping back far and only have to give up a 2nd and 3rd essentially.

And why would the Lions do this other than getting another 1st rounder??

Creative, Brother Avenger, but even as raging Trade Addict, I have to share Brother Broonz' skepticism about the reality of such a double move coming to pass.

The Lions would have to have a reason of their own to give up multiple Picks.

The only possible reason they could have for that would be a desire to Pick up #31, and that just isn't happening until #30 has been chosen. You're presumably proposing to make this swap when #23 is on the Clock, and a lot can and will happen between then and #31 coming up that would utterly destroy the Lions' plans. In short, they'd have to be out of their minds to make that trade, I'm afraid.

say pick 23 is on the clock, and they have 4 or 5 guys they really like, trading back still gets them at least one possibly two of them

I'm sorry to be such a turd in your punch bowl, my friend, but the next time that some team trades 4 Draft Picks ~ and moves back 4 spots with a 5th ~ for "possibly" will be the first time.

If those 4 or 5 guys all get scooped up by #31, they are dead.

Now, if you wanted to advance this theoretical scenario of yours so far as to suggest that there might be 8 or 9 guys that the Lions all liked equally ~ so equally, in fact, that they were indifferent as to which of the 8 or 9 guys might be there at #31 ~ then I suppose you could make that Argument.

Seems kind of far fetched, though...Even to me.

It is a very interesting idea and not all that crazy. I can't see this happening and hopefully it won't for one reason, this years draft is very weak. What has become very noticeable is players like Michael Brockers are considered top 15 picks when in fact they didn't stellar college careers but quickly went from that to being looked at as potential pro bowl players. The combine showed some people up and down in value more than I have ever seen which means there is a lot of doubt about their real value. Believe it or not, this may really help the Pats because they may get better players at 27 or 31 than at 10 or 15 at a better price!!

I really think that the Pats can only find potential starters in the first and second rounds and after that will be very questionable. The only players that can be found in the 3rd or fourth round are cornerbacks but they will be project players.

But by getting 27 and 31 they are guaranteeing they get at least one of the ones they like anyways at 27, with a possibility they get a second at 31, they have 2 3rd rounders and 3 7th rounders so they are really only giving up late 2nd round talent to get another late 1st round talent, and they could trade back with 31 to another team if they don't have another one of their guys fall to 31.

Why would the Patriots do this?

I think the consensus of the board is that the Patriots depth is on the whole solid but the Patriots need at least solid role players if not legit starters that need to be accounted for from this draft. If this draft is fairly shallow and has an early talent cliff, the Patriots go from having two top-45 picks (27 and 31) and two picks that are on or near the cliff (48 and 63) and one pick that is in the boulder zone of the cliff (#95) to having 1 top-45 pick (#23), three picks on or near the cliff (48, 54, 63) and two in the boulder zone of the cliff (87 and 95).

This trade would make sense if the evaluation of the Patriots roster was that it was extraordinarily thin and had numerous JAGs and WTF is he getting an NFL pay check players getting serious snaps guys, but I don't think that is a fair assessment of the Patriots current or projected roster.

More plausible trades, in my opinion, have the Pats moving down to the late 30s or early 40s and picking up a 2013 2nd, or getting to the late 40s or early 50s for a 2013 1st.
