Questioning the use of Moroney.

I have to say I had higher hopes for Moroney after some of his early success. I think he has a ton of talent but it's not being used correctly.
Has anyone lese felt he should be pitched the ball wide to take advantage of his speed ? I don't understand why they do not run him wide!!

Instead they pitch the ball wide to Dillon.
Not that Dillon can't get it done, but Maroney is much faster. It is frustrating to see how they've used him.

I think that Maroney will be featured in the Colt's game, particularly on plays that get him out in space.

Also, he should be used , coming out of the backfield, like Kevin Faulk.....on quick pases over the middle....

I would imagine you answered one of the questions in your post - Faulk is first choice on a lot of those types of plays. It's hard to argue with the choice given Faulk's production.

If we had used Maroney properly, we might be 14-4 and playing for the AFC Championship next week!

Let's get a grip. I don't think we had the talent level of the Bolts, and we beat them just yesterday with tough football, a tough mindset, and yes, superior coaching...

Sometimes you just have to go with "the proof is in the pudding." When we lost (gasp!) two in a row, and 3 out of 4, I was more in tune with the second-guessing, but to my eye, the ship got righted pretty well.

I hate to throw cold water on a good discussion -- and believe me, I like Maroney -- but sometimes you just have to accept that the playcalling is not going to look "perfect" from the outside... LoMo was not doing much when he got the ball, and I think they started going to Faulk because he was the guy getting it done. Or, it might have been game planned that way.

Either way, the ball started moving when they dug up Faulk and Gaffney as the primary weapons... and the job got done.

Sometimes when something ain't broke, and the pro mechanic already fixed it, you have to question your buddy Earl's opinion that they shoulda rebuilt the engine.

I gave up hope seeing him used differently and I don't think they've been holding back to surprise anyone. There obviously must be an issue we don't know about because if the casual fan is questioning it, the coaches must have already figured something out.

Maroney dances too much behind a line that doesn't multi task well. Yesterday their focus was on keeping our QB off life support. And until we get some more seriously talented WR's or Olinemen (no offense to the incumbants who are football players) that will likely continue to be their focus against teams with a tenacious pass rush.

Perhaps one day BB will decide to change the blocking schemes to suit a young RB's particular skill set, but I wouldn't hold my breath. He is on record saying all the backs are expected to run all the plays, and Dillon and Evans aren't built to run wide because speed isn't their game, or Bill's. He wants to be able to play smashmouth football in the slop when we need to and Maroney needs to come to terms with that. And using Maroney over Faulk coming out of the backfield (and blocking) just isn't going to happen in a playoff setting - Bill trusts his veterans. And even though Faulk has put the ball on the ground when overused, Maroney was barely hanging onto it yesterday. And he looked slow and indecisive, like a rookie who is running on fumes.

Agreed, but defenses kind of look for that with Faulk in the lineup...maybe not so with Maroney......in other words, do what they DONT expect us to do.

I would rather have Faulk in there knowing what he can do. Also he was excellent in blitz pick-ups yesterdays.

This morning on EEI (rare rare rare occasion for me to listen to that station), they had some Q&A with Brady--he apparently was unable to sleep and spent the night watching gamefilm of the Colts. One of his responses to a question was that, "...with about 4 minutes left in the first half, we pretty much just threw the game plan out. Everything that we had worked on and practiced all week--we just threw it out..."

so...game planning may not be so relevant...

One thing I would say was that I watched him in a number of passing situations, and the guy's blocking has come on a treat since early in the season. He really did a good job out there.

I said it in another thread, but I'll say it here too... I think Maroney was intimated by the Charger D. He got 5 attempts for 5 yards, I believe... Not good, considering he had done better earlier in the year... It's also possible the defenses are starting to game plan him... Who knows really but the Pats...

Very true. I saw one awsome block where he basicly flipped the guy.

I agree. he was stutter stepping at the line and I think he needs a few good runs to get his confidence up. I hope they pitch it to him wide and make it a foot race to the corner. I'm not sure of the speed of the colts LB's but I'd give it a try. He's also has a great stiff arm that he could use on the outside.

Agree 100%. The whole second half I was screaming for them to run more. Even if you are only averaging 2.5 carry, the D still has to respect the run on certain plays which would eventually open up the passing game more.

Instead they were shotgun 4-5 wide for what seemed like 80% of the second half plays.

I know to criticize it now after a win seems hyper-critical, but if we had lost this game I guarantee the majority of *****ing would be directed at 2nd half play calling.

It reminded me of the Colts game where based on the play calling you'd think we were down by 20 points, instead of one score.

I didnt see much of Dillon or Maroney, because pretty early they put Kevin into the game and I must say Kevin made some pretty damn fine runs. But I dont understand why sometimes they didnt bring in Dillon as he is the best RB blocker we have...well besides Evans but he isnt really our RB.

When we went one dimensional I just felt sick but somehow we pulled it out of the hat!
