Mac's Football Blog: Patriots Free Up $7.2M In Cap Space By Restructuring Tom Brady's Contract

I totally predicted this this:cool:

Anyway, there's really no downside to this because any cap room they have left after this season can be added on to next year's cap, so this simply gives them the option to spend another $7.2M now or save it for next year. Anyway, it means the Pats should have some money to play around, although it seems like the only move that would really eat into that cap room is a trade, because all the high-priced FAs seem to be off the market.

Commence a ton of rumors about what they could possibly do with an extra $7.2M in cap room this year. I've seen Dwight Freeney and Jared Allen mentioned as options, but I don't think we should set our sights that high:eek:

Nice. That's a lot of extra cap room.

Hopefully signing Wes Welker!

Pittsburgh just looked at their cap situation, looked at Mike Wallace still being a RFA, and said "OK, Belichick's just screwing with us at this point.".

How about bringing Wallace into the fold?
And trading for Freeney or Allen?
Resigning Wes Welker is pry the most likely reason however.:snob:

awesome..$7.2 is a good chunck of change..so what are we at now..with the 7.2?

Locking up Welker combined with Brady restructuring would make for some fun ideas. Could probably make some fans here cream themselves at the idea of getting Stewart AND Wallace.

Not that I think either, let alone both, will happen, its a fun thought.

I believe after all the signings, we were somewhere between 10-14m. Add 7m and we should be around 17m-21m in cap space.

if they sign welker..how much more $$ will it save the pats?

That would make sense.

SInce BJGE is gone perhaps M Bush?

If he takes less than 2-3m per year, I would sign him. I'm still uneasy about a 2nd year backs taking the starter job.

And that's before any moves with Light and Ochocinco, isn't it?

not gonna happen but Wallace Lloyd Welker Gronk Hernandez would be flat out unstoppable, best offense of all time.

I think we're closer to having 10-14m left now.

Note: I'm guessing, but after Welker's 9m, Lloyd's 3m, Fells' 2.5(?)m, and half a dozen others ranging from 600-1m I don't see us currently sitting at 17-21m.

I also don't remember Slater's or Connolly's number.

Probably 2-4m depending on how it is structured and the ammount they agree on, I highly doubt any long term deal would be in the 9m cap hit range for this season.

Nope. Add those and we should have (light-1.5m, chad-3m right?) 4.5m in addition to our cap space.

I wish Mike Reiss or Ian did a report on it. I'm hoping it at least gives us around 15m to work with.

Cutting Ocho wouldn't save us that much, we would take a hit for nearly as much as we'd save I believe. We'd save some, but I don't think it'd be enough to offset what he could potentially bring with a full offseason. (note: i'm not an ocho supporter, I just don't see a point in cutting him unless we have someone clearly better, unless im wrong about us not actually saving much by cutting him, if we would save 3m i'd be all for it)
