WE START WITH SEVEN
McCourty, Arrington, Dowling, Moore, Chung, Gregory, Barrett

FREE AGENT PRIORITIES
Add a safety and a corner (Molden?) or more for camp competition.

DRAFT PRIORITIES
Stop making believe with regard to finding a safety that will contribute in 2012. The choices are poor ones. They will be developmental. We can draft safeties in 2013 when the choices are better.

SOLUTION
Draft TWO corners in the rounds 2-4, one as a major addition and the other to beat out Molden or the other free agent acquired.

BOTTOM LINE
Our free agency priority is at safety.
Our draft priority is at corner.

As I stated in another thread, even IF there were better choices at safety, or IF the right player fell to them in the first/second round, he very well may not be able to contribute too much in 2012 anyway.

They didn't exactly start Meriweather or Chung right off the bat.

Meriweather started ZERO games in 2007. Chung started ONE in 2009.

I'm not sure why so many people think that we're going to take a safety that's going to step in immediately and contribute to an area of weakness.

It isn't going to happen. They would be slowly (very) be blended in throughout the season. That isn't exactly what we need right now.

That said, I could still see a draft pick spent on the position for the future, depending upon other variables.

I think we should take Harrison Smith in round 2, Casey Hayward in round 3, and Keith Tandy in round 4. Brandon Boykin could also be an option in the second if we need help at KR.

I don't think they'll use that many choices in the seconday at all.

Maybe 2 at the most, unless there's another late one from trading down into another round, which is probably likely.

Ahem! Eugene Wilson circa 2003. Championship!

Antwaun Molden has yet to re-sign with the New England Patriots.

Props to Wilson for making the conversion from CB.

Under the circumstances of that yr though, it wasn't much of a surprise.

There still hasn't been a rookie safety in the BB era that has come in and contributed as a starter right off the bat. The argument of Wilson would be the exact same as Moore doing it this yr, had we not come up 4 pts short.

The pattern is still that early round safeties aren't going to come in and line up in our back line of defense from day one, especially with this yr's crop..and there are many that think that's a high possibility.

mgteich is correct, the likelihood of a CB in the draft is probably more likely.

If a safety is chosen, and there very well may be one, he probably won't start opposite Chung from day one--the odds are greatly against it.

Moore's great claim to fame is breaking up a crucial pass after he was already beaten on it. Just bear that in mind, please, in any excitement about him.

Also, it's not inconceivable that Edelman wind up on the DB depth chart. I lean to thinking it's likely, now that Gonzalez is on board.

Whose to say that the New England Patriots won't select a cornerback for safety conversion in the 2012 NFL Draft?

Yeah...why should we be excited about a football player that looked good at times?

Your statement is true, besides the following big plays and comments:

per Pro Football Reference

1. He had double digit passes defended (10) passes defended in only 6 games started.

In comparison, Devin McCourty's Pro-Bowl year of 2010 netted him a total of 17. He started and played in 17 games.

McCourty had 12 this yr. Arrington had 13 this yr. Both played in almost every game (DMcC missed 2). Again...Moore had 10 in only 6 games started, including the playoffs.

2. Moore LED the team with passes defended in each and ALL of the 3 playoff games.

2 vs DEN
2 vs BAL
2 vs NYG

3. Moore broke up consecutive back to back passes to end the AFFCG (to end their drive and set up the game ending missed FG), BOTH extremely important. Without this, we don't even go to the SB, as they would've scored to go up 27-23 with less than :10 seconds left. One was a diving attempt where he batted the ball away, and the play before was the one where he stripped the ball from Lee Evens.

4. Moore caused the fumble by himself, forcing Cruz to caugh up the ball in the Super Bowl. Sadly, there were 12 men on the play, and it was ruled no play. Again, he's showing big play capability, and it could've been the game changer.

5. He picked off 2 balls, and showed great ball hawking skills in the process in the BUF game. He was close to the ball and the WR both times, stepping inside the WR's catching motion on the one, and practically taking it right out of his hands on the second one.

6. He also scored a defensive TD on the 2nd INT in BUF, another big play. I'd say when you return an INT for a TD in your rookie year, it's considered a big play.

If you didn't see improved pass coverage from Sterling Moore, as opposed to the other CB's, let alone big play capabilities and potential, then I don't know what you were watching.

Sure, there were times when he was out of position, or allowed a completed pass. Then again, he was a rookie. I don't know what you have to do on this team to earn any kind of positive respect sometimes. No, he's not the 2nd coming of Darrelle Revis, but he showed a lot of moxy and pretty good coverage skills in the limited time that we saw him.

Here's another decent quote regarding Moore's playoff play that I found:

"Kyle Arrington was able to post a +3.2 rating, but no other defensive back who played at least 25% of the team’s snaps posted a positive rating. After only playing 52 snaps in the regular season Sterling Moore was able to post a +3.8 rating in the postseason, but I doubt the Patriots will trust him enough to just hand him the starting position." I'm not saying that Moore should be a starter, b/c he has not earned that right. I think the starters should be McCourty and Dowling, with Arrington in the slot where he excels.

What I am saying is that for the contract, the money, the play that we've seen so far, his versatility, and the potential/upside--he is a damn fine option to have as a dime back/emergency/rotational guy.

Fair enough. Perhaps I was overreacting to his admission that he had no idea what the coverage was on that famous Baltimore play, which is a big part of why he was beaten in the first place.

Your litany of his accomplishments is indeed persuasive.

Half the team was blowing coverages on that drive. Edelman couldn't even find Boldin until after the ball was snapped.

Molden is a terrible player. I don't want to see him near a field we are playing on ever again, unless on the opposition team.

Do not see the DB issues getting resolved in the draft, leadership and communication issues were obvious during most of last year, so adding a rookie to that mix will not make things that much better.

Experience help wanted.

I agree that experienced (free agency) help is still needed at safety.

The draft addresses both 2012 needs and future needs. I could easily see us having 2 rookie defensive backs on the 53 man squad. We carry 9-11 defensive backs. There is room for 1-2 developmental defensive backs.

Safety is the biggest concern on the team right now. We need a legit free safety that can cover and provide help over the top who isn't late on every freakin play. I agree that anything we get in the draft will be developmental and most likely not contribute much this season but if there is a safety with potential available in round 1 pull the trigger. As it stands now we have 2 first round picks at corner and if need be we can throw one of them out at FS on third and long and put Moore, Arrington, etc in the game. The starting corners have the potential to be a strength but there are a lot of ifs in there with Dowling getting healthy and contributing and McCourty regaining his 2010 form.

are there any experienced corners left in FA? And what about safeties, only Landry? I think we should be hitting safety and corner in the draft in the first 3 rounds.

Tracy Porter? His production hasnt been great the last 2 years though and who knows if he'll get suspended due to the bounty stuff.
