above-average blocker..

Going back to a 3-TE formation?

that would be 3 ex-Broncos (McDaniels, Lloyd, Fells) if everything plays out..

"Free agent TE Daniel Fells to scheduled to visit with the Patriots Monday."

You forgot Tebow. :D

If this would mean the end of all the "Draft a TE with one of the first round picks!" type of posts, I'd be all for it.

We should be finding a blocking TE in free agency if we can.

Sometimes, Solder is needed as an OT. :)

Pats almost signed Fells before in a previous off-season.

Fells a good-sized tight end with good body control and balance along with above-average initial quickness and agility. He is a solid catcher who can reach out and pluck the ball away from his body, but he's not going to gain a lot of separation from good man coverage.

He is a solid inline blocker but is more effective at the second level, where he keeps his feet active and alive as he works his blocks. He is a smart tight end who can read coverages and does an excellent job of finding seams to settle in and provide a good target for his quarterback.

Actually, Fells was a pretty productive #2 TE while McDaniels was in Denver. He had 62 catches for 664 yards, and 5 TDs the two years McDaniels was there. Not what you want out of a #1 TE, but pretty productive for a #2 if your name isn't Hernandez.

Here is what Scout Inc. says about him:

sign the beast

I got a feeling it will get done, assuming Fells passes the physical..

keeping 3 TEs will rely less on Solder. Keep him in LT/RT.

This may indicate they will have 1 less WR on the roster (bye byte Underhood or Ocho)..

The Patriots should also take a look at Visanthe Shancoe and Jacob Tamme.

For interests sake, say the Patriots sign Fells, does that mean the Patriots can split Hernandez out wide more often or utilize his rushing ability out of the backfield? He'd be a match up nightmare in both situations.

That was some of the assumptions, as Hern really is more of a WR than a blocking TE..

With Fells, he can do both, but more like 60/40 blocker/wr. Gronk is the reverse, 60/40 WR, and Hern probably 80/20 WR.

It also means when we're on the goal-line and have three TE's on the field, that all three are threats to receive a pass if we go play action. With Solder playing TE last year, defenses didn't have to account for him in the passing game at all.
