I don't know, it's really just guesswork until we start reading the details on what some of these recent contracts are valued at.

• - March 12: 2012 cap figure is announced to be $120.6 million
• - Pats carry over $6.7 million they didn't use from 2011
• - Pats adjusted cap number is now $127.3 million
• - Pats are one of 30 teams given $1.6 million in cap space from Washington and Dallas
• - Pats are committed to $111.1 million ($99.8 million which includes Wes Wlkers $9.515 million franchise tag, plus $11.3 million in dead cap money)
• - This gives the Pats $17.8 million in cap space entering free agency

Since then this is what the Pats have done; everyone can fill in their own numbers for what they think each player's cap number will be. Keep in mind only the top 51 contracts count towards the cap right now.

• - 2nd round tender on Brian Hoyer ($1.9 million)
• - Kyle Love tendered
• - Niko Koutovides signed ($850,000)
• - Matthew Slater signed
• - Tracy White signed
• - Jonathan Fanene signed (3 years, 12 million, $3.85 signing bonus)
• - Marcus Harrison signed
• - Steve Gregory signed
• - Dan Connolly signed

I would guess the Pats have somewhere around $7 to $8 million available right now, perhaps?

I know I'm obsessed with this, but even I am not perfect. Why were the Jets so much smarter than the Pats 'knowing' in advance that a special paragraph would later appear in the CBA allowing them to wipe out their $10M dead cap last year by cutting vets extra early by the later specified deadline?

Yup, 2 years $8M...then he tore his tricepts in camp and went on IR in September. His remaining salary is $4M with a $5.25M cap hit or a $1.25M dead cap if cut - which Fox doesn't seem inclined to do for now.

As of Tuesday at 12:01AM according to LaCanfora per league sources the Pats had $14.1M in cap space including all adjustments and rollover. That did not include the $1.6M all teams will get based on the penalty to Washington and Dallas. So $15.5M before they re-signed a couple of their own and a couple of FA.

Not knowing how the multi year contracts are structured but assuming all of those signings knock off a player previously in the top 51 I would guess we are currently closer to around $7M under or less. I doubt Connolly came as cheap as some probably think.

They didn't owe him anything. He did however have dead cap remaining from his signing bonus amortization on his 2006 extension. That accelerates when you cut a player and they spread that over two years when they cut him after June 1.

Each season also has a $100k workout bonus and $750k in playing time incentives
The workout bonus would be LTBE; unsure about the playing time incentive
Cap numbers depending on whether or not the playing time incentive is LTBE or NLTBE:
2012: $1,683,333 or $2,433,333
2013: $2,083,333 or $2,833,333
2014: $3,083,333 or $3,833,333

The Pats could free up some space for themselves down the line in the ways we've discussed before (Light retiring, Ocho gone, Brady restructure, Welker extension), but for now - I bet they probably only have the $$ to really sign Lloyd, bring back a couple of their own guys, and then flier type guys who basically just knock other guys off the top 51.

I like the approach they've made in free agency so far. They had more ammunition than a lot of other good teams, but less than the teams that were active in this period.

They have signed two guys who are way better depth than they had last year (Fanene, Gregory), might add a third (Scott); retained two offensive starters (Welker, Connolly); and retained two of their best special teamers (White, Slater).

If they want more space, they can make it. That means they could be looking for trades on draft day, or looking for bargain type guys as training camp approaches.

What's the cap estimate on Connolly for this season? $3MM? Damned where is Miguel when you need him.

OK, I'm worried that we are pretty much done. The kid who did the page that Tip left the link for mentioned all the signings but didn't include anything yet on his spread sheet. He says we have $16MM left, but I don't think they include any of the people we've signed since FA started.

So we are left with just guesses.

JMT - has Slater Gregory and White costing us $4.2MM next year
AJ - had Fanene's first year number at $2.5
PFK - I'm going to guess that Connolly's number will be about $3MM BTW-a pure guess based on nothing.

So that's almost $10MM right there. If we deduct the $5MM for draft plus a reserve, then that's pretty much the 16MM. To do anything else would require some cuts or restructures. Of course all of this is pure speculation.

I would still like to see 3 more things down in this early part of FA, just so I don't have to worry about them. 1. Sign Carter. 2 Sign Anderson 3 Sign the WR. Do that and I think we have, even at this early date, a team I'm comfortable going into the season. The draft and any additions we get would be gravy

I still wish I know where we stand with the cap, so I know we can add those FA's (though I expect Carter not to sign until very late in the process.
