Don't think he's being looked at on defense. PFF ranks him significantly lower than any Patriots CB or S that played on the team last season;
Averaged 0.66 Int's per year and 0.33 sacks per year over his 6 year career. Amazingly, has never forced a fumble in his 6 NFL years.

For over 2m a year, he better be playing defense.

Boston Globe reports he will be special teamer and back up player.

Agreed, but we should wait to see how much of the money is guaranteed before we worry about it too much.

Gregory is a slightly undersized safety with average speed and adequate quickness, agility and athleticism. He has a great feel for the game. He often starts the season as a backup but ends up starting his share of games. He shows great route recognition and a good ability to read the quarterback's eyes from off coverage and will show decent range over the top. He is not timid about inserting himself on run defense and is a sure tackler but is not big or powerful enough to be a physical force near the line. He brings a big motor and a lot of enthusiasm.
Ok so now the Globe runs the team.
He is going to compete for a starting spot @ FS and play a ton. He is also going to contribute at nickel and special teams. So in summary, he's a good football player.
Reggie Nelson?Gregory is a free safety. There aren't many available..
and Matt Slater.Our current safeties are: Chung and Barrett.
We also have STer Sergio Brown.
Fixed it for ya!I think that we will still look for more safeties in the 2012 NFL Draft.
Scout Inc's write up on him makes him seem like really good fit for the Pats' defense:
Grade: 65 (Average Starter)
