Jared Allen just turned 30. The Vikes are rebuilding cutting four players who were core players yesterday. It appears the white flag is up and rebuild the name of the game. With the inevitable signing of Mario Williams for somewhere near $18mm to $20mm per year and perhaps to our AFC East rival, we still seek that one consistent pass rusher other Teams must scheme for. Ponder is not ready to lead them to a playoff spot with GB, the Lions and the Beats getting stronger yesterday.

Allen is still elite at 30 and can be a Team leader. At 6'6" and 270 he is bigger than Carter and Anderson. Everyone was shocked at the money the Vikes paid for Allen two years ago. But in 2012 he gets $11,619,850, 2013: $14,280,612, and that seems fair if you see what Williams coming off an injury will get. Would you give one of our first rounders and a third for him? Allen is much younger than Carter but I think he and Carter as your DEs and Anderson as a rotation, would not be bad. Allen alone had more than both Anderson and Carter got together. He had 64 Tackles last year with 22 Sacks so he can set the edge a little.

There is the possibility you could extend Allen as well. Think he would not like a shot to play for the Pats?>

With the advent of the numbers yesterday, his number is not unreasonable.

Do the Pats take a shot of bringing him back? Redskins seem set at revamping their whole WR corps. Would be an affordable option if they decide to part ways with Ocho Cinco. Brady certainly appreciates him.

Isn't Gaffney like 100 now...it's not like he was a Speed guy. We NEED Speed not more slow guys we already have Welker.:p:D

Re: Is Jared Allen out of reach?

Yes, given his cost in cap and trade, he is out of reach for the NEP org

Re: Is Jared Allen out of reach?

I would in a minute. He is worth it.

He's 31. Is this a trick question?

He seems to be getting better with age.

Hes not an outside the hashes guy but Brady sure liked him.

BB wanted to keep him but Josh paid him more.

Hes better than Edelman.

Let me be the first to welcome back The Hut!

The Patriots do a lousy job drafting wide receivers and their recent
free agent signings (Galloway, Holt, Ochocinco0 were also poor. At
least Gaffney was in the system.

Actually my first reaction was that for $11MM you could get BOTH Anderson and Carter resigned and have plenty left over. But this is a way you could get it done.

First you give the Vikings something like a 3rd in 2013 for relieving them of that financial burden. Then you get get Allen to sign a new contract. You give him the 25MM he has coming from the Jets only you spread it out over a 5 year contract. He probably has 2 very good years left and what dead money hit the Pats take 3 or 4 years down the road, will be eaten up by the expected $40MM cap increase in 2014 Now you get him for a cap hit this year of 4-6MM. Now Carter is redundant and we easily afford to sign Anderson.

Now that would be a serious pass rush. Of course the contract stuff would have to be worked out before the trade.

Better than Edelman as a receiver maybe, but he doesn't add the versatility (punt returns and to a much lesser extent DB) that Edelman does. If it comes down to Gaffney or Edelman as the 4th WR, I want Edelman because he'll contribute in other areas.

Gaffney is better than Ocho though, no question.

Edelman is not a 4th WR.

Fingertip catch in Baltimore...for that alone he should come back!

Is anyone else looking forward to the Patriots drafting a good WR--which will happen, and probably soon--as much for the fact that it will end the "BB can't draft WRs!" brigade (which used to be the "BB can't draft TEs or LBs!" brigade) as for what it will do on the field.

Works for me. Do you mean Vikes, not Jets?
At 22 sacks, he is younger than Carter and more sacks than Carter and Anderson together. If you look at Mario is going to get. How much better is Mario as a QB killer versus Allen?
You know BB is going to trade away one of the firsts. Why waste it for a definite maybe in unknown rookies with a couple of third rounders we trade down to. What makes more sense? Keep in mind although he plays Defense. He still affects Brady in his remaining years.
Keep building picks for years down the road is nice, but where is your best opportunity for Championships? Now with Brady!

Allen can fit our CAP, Mario does not.

Gaffney is not as athletic as Lloyd, but similar statistically. Especially in this offense. Plus, he would be insanely cheaper.

Sign a veteran TE to block & allow to play more as a rec'r, add Gaffney, add 2 rookie WR, re-sign Branch. Not bad. Plus, Vereen should add a VERY nice rec'ing option out of the backfield.

Use that Lloyd $ to invest in the D.

I heard he was 4th string WR, 4th string CB and competing with Zoltan Mesko. He apparently wants to be a starter.

BREAKING NEWS: Edelman will now compete with Brady for starting QB. According to "unknown sources", it is VERY close. BB will name the starter on game day of Week 2.

Lastly, yes. Gaffney was an excellent route runner and a great 3rd wr. Brady seemed to connect well him.
